To change what viewers see without ending a YouTube livestream, change the media or scene in your encoder—such as OBS—while leaving the live event running in YouTube Live Control Room. YouTube’s documented encoder workflow treats changing the stream content and ending the event as separate actions. Its reviewed help pages do not establish whether a separate API or newer YouTube control can schedule an in-progress playlist change.
What YouTube can schedule—and what the encoder controls
YouTube Live Control Room schedules and controls the live event. In the encoder workflow, you connect an encoder, start sending content, wait for the preview, and select Go live. End Stream is a separate action for ending the broadcast and stopping the encoder output. A media change does not require ending the event. YouTube’s encoder workflow
That distinction matters: scheduling a live event for a future time is not the same as scheduling which video plays at a particular time during a broadcast. The documented, source-backed approach is to manage the media in the encoder. The reviewed YouTube pages do not settle whether another API or newer interface offers an in-progress playlist scheduler.
Set up an OBS playlist for the livestream
- Install VLC with the matching architecture. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC. OBS Media Sources
- Add a VLC Video source. In the OBS scene used for your live program, add a VLC Video source and add your locally available media files in the order you want them to play. OBS scenes and sources make up the stream output. OBS Sources Guide
- Choose loop and shuffle settings. Turn on looping if the list should repeat. Leave shuffle off if the order is part of your schedule. OBS documents loop and shuffle for the VLC Video source; it does not document timed playlist replacement in that source. OBS Media Sources
- Start the encoder and the YouTube event. Connect your stream to the encoder, start sending content, wait for YouTube’s preview, then select Go live in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder workflow
- Make the planned change inside OBS. Change the media or transition to another scene at the planned point. Keep the YouTube event running; do not select End Stream for a content change. OBS Sources Guide
- End the event only when the broadcast is over. At that point, use YouTube’s End Stream control and stop sending content from the encoder. YouTube’s encoder workflow
Playlist advancement versus a clock-time change
An OBS VLC playlist can play its media items in sequence, with optional looping and shuffling. That is different from a wall-clock instruction such as “switch to the next block at 9:00 p.m.” The OBS documentation reviewed describes playlist behavior but does not specify timed playlist replacement or guarantee a clock-time scheduler for an individual source.

If the change must happen at an exact time rather than when a file finishes, use an encoder automation or control method that supports timed actions, then verify the setup in a private or unlisted rehearsal. The specific method and its recovery behavior depend on the encoder workflow you configure; the cited OBS documentation does not establish a particular automation add-on.
Do not confuse a YouTube queue with an on-air playlist
YouTube’s queue arranges videos for the viewer to watch next in a browser session. It does not feed those videos into your livestream’s encoder. The queue does not persist after the browser is closed, though it can be saved as a playlist. Queue videos on YouTube

- YouTube queue: Organizes a viewer’s watching session.
- OBS VLC playlist: Lists media items used by an encoder source.
- Scheduled YouTube livestream: Sets a future start for the live event.
- In-stream media change: Changes the source or scene in the encoder while the event continues.
Check live-stream eligibility and content rights
YouTube’s live-streaming help says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days; the stated minimum age is 16. Check the current requirements for your account in YouTube Help. Get started with live streaming
Make sure you have the rights to the videos and audio you broadcast. A playlist change does not change the copyright status of its contents. Keep the YouTube live event open while changing encoder sources, and use YouTube’s end control only when you intend to finish the broadcast.

Choose the change method that fits the program
- Trigger: Decide whether the next item should start when the current media ends or at a specific clock time.
- Media location: Confirm whether the files are available locally or delivered over a network.
- Change type: Decide whether to replace media within a source or switch to another scene.
- Playback order: Set loop and shuffle to match the intended sequence.
- Recovery: Plan what the stream should show if a file fails or playback ends unexpectedly. The documented playlist settings cover looping and shuffling, not every scheduling or recovery case.
