As a worked example—not a measurement of a typical Indian PC—a desktop drawing 120–200 watts continuously at ₹7–₹8 per kWh uses about ₹605–₹1,152 of electricity over 30 days. Measure your own setup and use the marginal rate on your bill before comparing that figure with a cloud service.
How much does it cost to run a PC 24/7 in India?
Use the computer’s average power draw at the wall, not the wattage printed on its power supply. A plug-in electricity usage meter can measure the whole PC; include a monitor or other equipment only if it will also remain on for the stream. Your bill’s marginal rate matters: electricity tariffs differ by state and consumer category, so ₹7 or ₹8 per kWh is an example assumption, not a national household rate. The Central Electricity Authority publishes tariff information, but your local DISCOM bill or current tariff schedule is the practical source for your own rate.
For a continuous stream, the calculation is:
- Daily energy (kWh) = average wall watts ÷ 1,000 × 24
- Daily electricity cost = daily kWh × your marginal tariff per kWh
- 30-day electricity cost = daily cost × 30

What changes the bill?
- Actual draw: Measure the PC while it is doing the work you plan to stream. A PSU’s rated capacity is not its continuous draw.
- Other equipment: A monitor, router or UPS losses can add power use if they run continuously. Measure or estimate these separately.
- Your tariff: Use the relevant marginal per-kWh rate for your household and consumption band. The CEA’s 2025 publication includes FY 2024–25 tariff material across jurisdictions; it does not establish one rate for every Indian household. See the CEA tariff publication.
- Incremental versus total cost: If the PC would already be on for gaming or another task, the stream’s incremental electricity cost is lower than the full cost of running a dedicated PC solely for the stream.
Is cloud streaming cheaper than leaving your PC on?
Not in every case. A home PC already running has a different incremental cost from a desktop kept on only for streaming. A self-managed VPS may have a lower monthly invoice than a managed service, but transfer limits, setup, monitoring and recovery take time and may add costs. Data transfer can change the comparison
At 4.5 Mbps, StreamNeo estimates roughly 2 GB per hour, or about 1.4 TB over 30 days. This is an approximate calculation, not a recommended bitrate for every video or a guaranteed monthly transfer figure: the actual amount varies with bitrate, interruptions and unit convention. With local OBS, the traffic uses your home connection; with a self-managed server it uses the VPS transfer allowance; with a managed provider it uses that service’s connection. Check for any broadband fair-use cap or server transfer limit before relying on a continuous stream.

Do not treat hardware depreciation as a bill
A computer’s purchase price is not automatically a new monthly cash expense. If you want to include wear or replacement planning, show the assumed purchase cost and useful life separately as an accounting estimate. Which option fits your setup?
- Use a PC you already keep on when its incremental electricity use is acceptable, your home upload is steady and you can handle interruptions. Your PC and connection remain part of the stream’s operating path.
- Consider a dedicated home PC only after measuring its wall draw and calculating the cost at your own tariff. Include any always-on monitor, router or UPS losses that apply.
- Consider a VPS if you can configure and maintain FFmpeg or similar software and have verified enough sustained transfer for your bitrate. A low base invoice alone does not show the full cost of setup and operations.
- Consider managed cloud streaming if keeping a home computer powered and connected is the problem, or you prefer the service to handle continuous playback and recovery. Compare storage, billing length, quality limits and provider terms.
For a fair comparison, put the same 30-day period beside each option and check: measured home watts and marginal tariff; data transfer allowance; setup and maintenance time; who handles a restart after a dropped stream; storage and taxes; and whether the service meets your required quality and channel needs.

Check YouTube’s stream requirements before calculating savings
Electricity cost does not determine whether a stream is eligible or technically healthy. YouTube says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its live-streaming tips state: “To live stream, you must have no live streaming restrictions in the past 90 days and have a verified channel.”
Bitrate and upload headroom
YouTube’s encoder settings and streaming tips give bitrate guidance by resolution and frame rate. For H.264, the page lists 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps as minimums, with recommended settings of 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps respectively. These are YouTube’s published settings guidance, not a promise that any connection will sustain them. YouTube advises a speed test and upload headroom; its streaming tips suggest leaving about 20% beyond the total bitrate. As YouTube puts it: “The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.”

Test and monitor
Before relying on a 24/7 setup, test the encoder and monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing the upload connection: “We recommend running a speed test to test your upload bitrate.” A connection that briefly reaches the target but cannot sustain it can still cause buffering or dropped frames.

Use videos and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s policies for your channel and intended use.
