Yes. A 24/7 YouTube live stream can loop prerecorded videos without using a YouTube channel playlist: a cloud streaming service or encoder can handle the video sequence upstream and send YouTube one continuous live feed. A YouTube playlist and YouTube’s viewer-facing Loop control are separate features; neither is inherently required to assemble that feed.
What “playlist” means—and when it is optional
A YouTube playlist organizes videos for viewers to watch on your channel. YouTube’s Loop control repeats a video or playlist during ordinary playback. Neither is the same as a live broadcast: YouTube Live receives a feed from an encoder or streaming service. If that service loops prerecorded files before sending the feed, it does not need a YouTube playlist to sequence them.
“Playlist” can also mean an internal queue or file used by a particular streaming product. Whether that is required depends on the product’s workflow; check its current instructions rather than assuming every service works the same way.
Ways to run a prerecorded 24/7 live stream
Cloud streaming service
A cloud service can host and repeat prerecorded videos, then deliver the resulting live feed to YouTube. Local encoder
YouTube also supports encoders in the form of software applications or standalone hardware. With a local setup, the computer or device running the encoder must remain available for the stream. The encoder category alone does not guarantee automatic file looping; confirm that the software or hardware you choose supports the sequence and repeat behavior you need. YouTube’s encoder guide
Set up and check the YouTube live stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it before your planned start. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance
- Choose a workflow that explicitly supports prerecorded video. Use a cloud service that handles continuous looping, or select an encoder setup whose instructions explain how it repeats files. YouTube documents software and standalone-hardware encoders, but that does not mean every encoder loops files by itself.
- Create or manage the stream in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Give the streaming service or encoder the stream URL and stream key it needs to connect. - Monitor the running broadcast. A successful start does not remove the need to check that the feed and sound remain as intended while the stream is operating.
Plan for long-stream archive and DVR limits
YouTube’s current guidance says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For streams longer than 12 hours, DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable. A 24/7 broadcast therefore should not be treated as a guaranteed complete replay viewers can rewind or watch later; plan recordings and viewer expectations around those limits. Choose a setup by what you need it to do
Before committing to a cloud service or local encoder, check the practical differences below. Features and commercial terms vary by vendor, so verify them in that provider’s current documentation.
- Who hosts and operates the stream: a cloud service runs its streaming workflow remotely; a local encoder depends on your own computer or hardware.
- Prerecorded-video looping: confirm the setup explicitly supports repeating your files and controlling their sequence.
- Uptime and recovery: determine what must stay powered and connected, how stream health is monitored, and what happens if YouTube or the connection drops.
- Files and playback needs: check supported input formats and whether YouTube’s archive and DVR behavior meets your audience’s needs.
- Current limits and price: confirm the provider’s present limits, plan terms, and pricing rather than inferring them from a general category or YouTube’s listing.
