VLC must be installed for this source; match its architecture to OBS, and test the stream in YouTube Live Control Room before making it public.
Before you set up the playlist
Confirm that your channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance says a channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. Creators must be at least 16. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of your planned broadcast. Check YouTube’s live-streaming overview for current eligibility and setup details.
Install OBS and VLC
YouTube lists OBS as open-source streaming software available at no charge. OBS’s Media Sources documentation specifies that VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
Build a playlist in OBS
- Add the playlist source: In the active scene, use the Sources dock’s add control and choose VLC Video. If that source is missing, install VLC and restart OBS.
- Add and order your files: Add the video files to the source’s playlist, arranging them in the sequence you want. Leave Shuffle Playlist off to play them in that order.
- Choose whether it repeats: Check Loop Playlist. OBS documentation describes looping as on by default; leave it on for a repeating broadcast or turn it off for a one-pass event. Confirm the setting rather than relying on its default.
- Keep the source visible: The VLC Video source’s visibility behavior determines what happens when it is hidden. OBS documents the default as stopping playback when not visible and restarting when visible. Keep the source visible in the active scene throughout the broadcast, or deliberately choose a different visibility behavior in the source’s properties.
- Check the scene output: Preview the scene and confirm the video is framed correctly and its audio is present. If you need to play only one file, OBS’s built-in Media Source is intended for an individual media file; use VLC Video for a multi-file playlist.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or select a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream.
- In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube if available, or use the service’s custom server option, and enter the URL and key from Live Control Room.
- Choose RTMPS when it is available. YouTube recommends encrypted RTMPS ingestion. Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or publish it.
- Apply the settings, start the OBS output when ready, and use Live Control Room’s preview and controls to verify the incoming feed before starting the public broadcast.
YouTube explains stream keys and encoder setup in its encoder setup guide. The stream key directs the encoder’s feed to the correct YouTube stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Test the playlist and connection before going public
- Allow enough upload bandwidth: Your available upload capacity should exceed the total outgoing bitrate from OBS. YouTube recommends leaving about 20% upload-bandwidth headroom; this is a practical buffer, not a guarantee against connection problems. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and troubleshooting guidance.
- Test representative content: Run a test using the videos and audio you intend to broadcast. Confirm that the first file starts, the next file follows in the right order, and the playlist either stops or repeats as intended.
- Inspect the YouTube preview: Check picture, sound, and stream health in Live Control Room. Confirm the watch page works on the devices your audience is likely to use.
- Monitor the live output: Keep an eye on picture, audio, and stream health during the broadcast. A playlist can be configured correctly while a network or encoder issue still disrupts the live feed.
Check rights and YouTube policies
Pre-recorded playback does not exempt a live broadcast from YouTube’s Community Guidelines or Terms of Service. Use videos and audio you own or have permission to stream. Copyrighted material can be matched during a live broadcast, and copyright strikes or other restrictions can affect streaming. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and the policies that apply to your channel before broadcasting.
Troubleshoot common playlist problems
| What you see | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video is missing from the source menu | VLC is not installed, or OBS has not detected it. | Install VLC, matching 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS where applicable, then restart OBS. |
| A file plays, but the next one does not | The source may not contain the intended playlist, or playback has reached the end of a non-looping sequence. | Check that every file is in the VLC Video playlist, confirm its order, and inspect Loop Playlist. |
| The playlist stops when you switch scenes | The VLC source is hidden and follows its stop-when-not-visible behavior. | Keep the source visible in the active scene during the broadcast, or adjust its visibility behavior intentionally. |
| YouTube does not receive the OBS feed | The server URL or stream key may be wrong, or the connection may not have enough upload capacity. | Copy the current URL and key from the selected Live Control Room stream, check OBS’s stream settings, and review YouTube’s stream-health status. |
| Preview has unstable picture or sound | The outgoing bitrate may exceed available upload capacity, or the scene/source may not be producing the intended audio or video. | Check OBS’s output and source, test with representative files, and leave the upload headroom YouTube recommends. |
For a playlist that must stay live continuously
OBS is the local-file method: the computer running OBS must remain available to send the stream. YouTube’s encoder directory also lists Gyre for continuous 24/7 streams of prerecorded videos; the cited YouTube listing does not establish Gyre’s current pricing or terms.
