Ads generate revenue when YouTube serves monetized ad impressions; Super Chat generates revenue when viewers choose to pay to highlight a message. For your 24/7 stream, compare the revenue YouTube attributes to each feature over the same period in Analytics—generic CPMs cannot settle the question.
How to compare earnings on your channel
Use actual estimated revenue attributed to live-stream ads and Super Chat, not total channel income. Choose comparable time windows and, as far as practical, compare periods with similar schedules and audiences. YouTube says Analytics can show live-stream and replay ad revenue using the Live filter; its Analytics also separates estimated ad revenue from estimated revenue across all revenue types. Super Chat should be assessed as its own revenue source for the same span.
- In YouTube Studio Analytics, filter the report to Live and the dates you want to compare. Check estimated ad revenue for that window, including live streams and replays where shown.
- Check Super Chat revenue for the same dates and live content. Compare the actual feature-attributed figures rather than overall revenue.
- Repeat the comparison across more than one comparable period if your audience or schedule varies. A single unusually busy stream may not represent typical results.
CPM is what advertisers pay before YouTube’s share; it is not your take-home revenue. RPM is after revenue share, but it combines revenue sources—including ads, Premium, memberships and Super Chat—so it is not a clean ads-versus-Super-Chat comparison. Why the result differs from stream to stream
Ads depend on delivery, not just views
YouTube may show pre-roll, display and mid-roll ads on monetized live streams, but an ad slot is not guaranteed to serve. Whether a view receives an ad can depend on ad availability, targeting, geography, Premium status and other factors. A view count or advertised CPM therefore cannot tell you how many monetized playbacks your stream will get or what you will earn.

Ads may bring in more when a stream has many viewers receiving monetized playbacks. That is a mechanism-based possibility, not a universal ranking or forecast.
Super Chat depends on willing, eligible buyers
Super Chat lets a viewer pay to make a message stand out in live chat; Super Stickers offer paid animated stickers. Revenue depends on eligible viewers choosing to buy, rather than on ad impressions. A highly engaged community with viewers willing and able to pay may make fan-funding revenue substantial, but that does not guarantee it will exceed ads.

Eligibility and effective revenue share matter
Super Chat and Super Stickers require access to the relevant YouTube monetization features. YouTube’s minimum fan-funding requirements include membership in the YouTube Partner Program, being at least 18, and living in a region where the feature is available; individual features may have additional criteria.

YouTube’s published module terms state that creators receive 70% of net revenue from channel memberships, Super Chat, Super Stickers and Super Thanks under the Commerce Product Module. The Watch Page Monetization Module states a 55% creator share of net revenue from ads displayed or streamed on public videos on the content Watch Page. These percentages apply to different modules and do not predict how much gross revenue either source will generate. Check the agreements that apply to your channel. What YouTube’s live-ad controls can—and cannot—tell you
For a monetized channel with monetization enabled on a live stream, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are turned on automatically. Mid-rolls can be placed automatically or manually, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve: a viewer may continue watching without receiving an ad.

Automatic and manual mid-rolls
YouTube recommends automatic mid-roll ads and offers low, medium and high frequency settings. It also allows scheduled breaks at 6, 12, 18, 24 or 30-minute intervals, as well as manual insertion. YouTube notes that earnings potential may be lower with scheduled or manual settings than with automatic mode. Automatic ads are not necessarily shown to every viewer at the same time.
YouTube says its automatic system temporarily pauses mid-rolls for viewers sending gifts, Super Chats or Stickers, and snoozes them for everyone during high-engagement moments. This is intended to reduce interruptions around those moments, not to guarantee a particular balance of ad and fan-funding revenue.

YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in instream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. That platform-reported comparison covered 207 countries in January 2024. It compares automatic mid-roll adopters with non-adopters; it is not a comparison with Super Chat, an individual forecast or a guarantee. More frequent mid-roll opportunities may create more chances for ads to serve, but interruptions can affect the viewing experience. Consider your stream’s format and audience when choosing YouTube’s low, medium or high automatic frequency, or a scheduled or manual approach. Then use Analytics to see what happened to your own revenue; the setting alone does not tell you how many ads actually ran.
