For a mostly static music stream, start with 1080p at 30 fps, H.264 video at 5 Mbps using CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and stereo AAC audio at 128 Kbps. Stream over RTMPS and test the setup with representative audio and movement before relying on it. These are YouTube ingestion recommendations, not an OBS preset; your sustained upload capacity and music rights are just as important as the encoder settings.
Recommended OBS settings for a static music stream
Use 30 fps for artwork or other visuals with little movement; 60 fps adds little for a static image and requires more bandwidth. YouTube’s H.264 guidance recommends 5 Mbps video for 1080p30, with a stated range from 5 Mbps minimum to 14 Mbps recommended maximum. The settings below are a practical starting point, not a guarantee that a particular connection or computer will hold a 24/7 broadcast.
| Setting | Starting value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Resolution and frame rate | 1080p, 30 fps | Suitable for mostly static artwork without spending bandwidth on unnecessary frame rate. |
| Encoder | H.264 | Matches the YouTube live-ingestion guidance cited here. |
| Rate control | CBR | YouTube recommends constant bitrate for live streaming. |
| Video bitrate | 5 Mbps | YouTube’s recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p30. If the connection cannot sustain it with headroom, lower resolution and use the corresponding YouTube bitrate guidance. |
| Keyframe interval | 2 seconds | YouTube recommends 2 seconds and says not to exceed 4 seconds. |
| Audio | AAC, stereo, 128 Kbps, 44.1 kHz | YouTube recommends 128 Kbps for stereo audio and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. |
| Protocol | RTMPS | YouTube recommends RTMPS for the stream connection. |
| Color for SDR | Rec. 709, 8-bit | YouTube’s SDR recommendation; check that your OBS output is configured consistently. |
YouTube’s current encoder recommendations, checked in 2026, are documented in its live encoder settings. For comparison, its H.264 recommendation for 720p30 is 3 Mbps minimum and 8 Mbps recommended. Select a lower resolution if that is what your connection can sustain reliably; do not choose a bitrate simply because a speed test briefly reports a high result.
Set up the YouTube connection and OBS output
In YouTube Studio, create or open the scheduled live stream and retrieve its stream key from the stream setup. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose YouTube as the service, and connect the account or enter the stream key. Then set the output and video options to the values in the table, choosing RTMPS where the service or server selection offers it. Labels can differ by OBS version and connection method.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Confirm the stream configuration: in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the selected stream and preview before going live.
- Set output: in OBS open Settings > Output, configure H.264, CBR, and a 5,000 Kbps video bitrate for 1080p30, then set the keyframe interval to 2 seconds. If your output mode exposes separate encoder tabs, apply the settings to the active streaming encoder.
- Set video: in Settings > Video, choose 1920×1080 output and 30 fps if the connection can support the bitrate plus headroom.
- Set audio: in Settings > Output or the audio section for the active encoder, select AAC stereo at 128 Kbps; use 44.1 kHz sample rate.
- Check SDR color: use Rec. 709 and 8-bit output for SDR, avoiding mismatched color settings between the source and output.
- Run a representative test: play the intended music and visual, inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages, and verify audio levels before leaving the broadcast unattended.
Choose bitrate from sustained upload capacity
The upload rate that matters is the sustained capacity available to OBS at the actual streaming location, not the advertised download speed or a brief speed-test peak. YouTube advises leaving 20% bandwidth headroom beyond the total stream bitrate. At a 5 Mbps video bitrate, that means allowing at least 6.25 Mbps for video alone; audio and other network traffic require additional capacity. YouTube’s recommendation is to leave room because shared networks and competing traffic can reduce available upload bandwidth.
Measure upload speed when the network is under representative normal load. If it cannot consistently support the chosen output with headroom, lower the resolution and choose the corresponding bitrate guidance in YouTube’s encoder settings. Test again with the real audio and moving elements rather than relying on a still-screen check. YouTube’s streaming tips advises leaving “a bit of room (20% recommended).”

Loop music and visuals in OBS
Repeat one file with Media Source
OBS Media Source can play local audio or video files on Windows, macOS, and Linux. Add a Media Source, select the file, and enable Loop to play it again after it ends. The source also offers Restart playback when source becomes active, which restarts playback when the source becomes active; it is not a network-recovery setting.
Loop a playlist with VLC Video
For multiple files, use OBS’s VLC Video source, add the files to its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, install 64-bit VLC. This is useful when you want a rotating sequence rather than repeating one long file. Check transitions and audio levels in a test broadcast.

Looping only repeats the media. It does not keep a computer powered, restore a failed internet connection, restart OBS after a crash, or guarantee that YouTube remains connected.
Plan for failures, archives, and rights
Test reliability before leaving the stream unattended
- Check upload capacity at the streaming location and during a time that reflects normal network use; retain YouTube’s recommended headroom.
- Test with the actual music and visual movement, then check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages.
- If using a backup encoder, YouTube advises testing failover by stopping the primary encoder.
- If keeping a local recording, check that its file size is growing. YouTube recommends a local archive as a backup, but these practices do not guarantee continuous operation.
Do not assume a 24-hour broadcast will be fully archived
YouTube says it can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. DVR rewind may also be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. If the full program matters, plan shorter sessions and a local recording, and check the current behavior in the channel’s Live Control Room. See YouTube’s live stream archive guidance and DVR guidance.

Clear music rights before broadcasting
YouTube scans live streams for matches to third-party content. It may replace a broadcast with a placeholder warning and may temporarily interrupt or terminate it if the content remains. YouTube says licensed music may still require the rights owner to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist; having a license alone may not prevent interruption. Its guidance on copyright issues with live streams states that “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match does not mean every stream is taken down.
Before using Indian film songs, devotional music, or other third-party recordings, confirm that your permissions cover live streaming in the territories you intend to reach and any archive or replay. YouTube’s live terms make the provider responsible for having necessary rights, including music licensing rights from artists, labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. If the rights holder requires it, arrange Content ID allowlisting for your channel. The sources cited here do not identify or endorse a particular Indian music licensing provider.
