If you stop and restart the outgoing stream for every file, you risk interrupting the live broadcast; changing the media source upstream while maintaining continuous encoder output is the better approach. YouTube’s documentation explains the encoder-to-ingest workflow, but does not provide a file-switching recipe that guarantees gap-free transitions.
Why video changes can interrupt a 24/7 stream
A typical YouTube live setup has two relevant parts: the encoder sends a continuous output to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key, while a playout or media layer supplies the video and audio. A gap can occur if changing files also stops the encoder output, interrupts its connection, or leaves it with no valid media to send.
The practical goal is therefore to change the material being played without stopping the output connection. This is an operational approach based on YouTube’s ingest model, not a transition method YouTube documents as guaranteed to be seamless. The actual result depends on the playout software or device and how it handles the handoff.
Set up the stream so the encoder can stay connected
- Configure the YouTube broadcast. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream and use the stream URL and stream key shown there in your encoder. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it publicly, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Make the encoder output continuous. Configure the encoder to keep sending to YouTube for the duration of the broadcast. Avoid a workflow that ends the outgoing stream every time one file finishes.
- Queue and switch media upstream. Use the playout software, playlist, or device that feeds the encoder to select the next file. Check that a file change does not stop the encoder, reset its connection, or leave its output without a valid video or audio signal.
- Verify the transition before relying on it. Observe the complete path—from file playback through the encoder to YouTube—during a planned switch. Check both the outgoing encoder signal and the live playback. The YouTube API’s example of a 24/7 broadcast continuing while another broadcast is made live concerns broadcast objects; it is not a recipe for switching local video files.
Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance
Correct output settings help maintain a stable ingest, but they do not eliminate gaps caused by a playout handoff. YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) for RTMP/RTMPS and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. Match the codec, resolution, frame rate, bitrate, audio, and other settings to YouTube’s current encoder guidance for your chosen format.

For H.264, YouTube lists 17 Mbps as its recommended video bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps and 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps. These are YouTube recommendations for those formats, not guarantees of uninterrupted switching or universal targets for every resolution, frame rate, codec, or network.
- Use the same compatible output format across a transition where your playout workflow allows it. A format change can require the encoder or ingest path to reconfigure.
- Keep audio present and correctly configured as files change; check for silence or an audio-format change at the handoff.
- Do not treat a higher bitrate as a fix for a source-switch pause. Diagnose whether the encoder output itself stops before changing bitrate.
Choose the ingest protocol for the workflow
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection. Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it and you want secure ingest. YouTube describes RTMP/RTMPS as suitable for ordinary low-latency live workflows.

HLS
HLS is a segment-based alternative for supported workflows, with different latency and configuration requirements. YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies transport-stream segments of 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Those are HLS operating requirements, not a method for ensuring seamless changes between files. Switching to HLS alone should not be expected to remove a gap caused by the source or playout layer.
DASH
DASH is also segment-based and generally has higher latency than RTMP/RTMPS in YouTube’s protocol descriptions. Protocol choice affects the ingest workflow and latency; it does not by itself establish that a particular file-switching setup will be gap-free.

Compare the practical ways to run continuous playout
The key distinction is whether the playout setup can change files while its encoder output remains connected. YouTube’s encoder directory includes a dedicated hardware encoder, AJA HELO Plus, and a cloud studio, Upstream, for 24/7 streaming. The directory does not establish that either guarantees gap-free file transitions, nor does it resolve their recovery behavior, monitoring, or failure modes.

Test the whole chain and troubleshoot by symptom
Before leaving a channel unattended, test the actual playlist, encoder, and YouTube ingest together. A successful connection at startup does not prove that later file changes will preserve output.

The live stream ends or disconnects when a file finishes
- Likely cause: The workflow stops the encoder or its YouTube output when playback ends.
- What to check: Confirm whether the encoder remains connected during the transition. Change the workflow so the playout layer advances the media while the outgoing encoder stream stays active.
The stream stays live but playback pauses or goes blank
- Likely cause: The encoder remains connected but receives no usable media during the handoff.
- What to check: Inspect the playout transition and confirm the next file is available and begins producing valid audio and video. The precise fix depends on how your playout software or device handles a source change.
The encoder repeatedly reconnects or YouTube reports an unstable ingest
- Likely cause: The output connection or encoder settings are changing, or the connection cannot sustain the configured stream.
- What to check: Compare the encoder’s format, CBR behavior, keyframe interval, bitrate, and audio settings with YouTube’s published guidance. Look for a reconnect at the exact time of the file change before blaming the media file itself.
Changing to HLS does not remove the pause
- Likely cause: The interruption is in the source handoff rather than a protocol setting.
- What to check: Verify the HLS segment and playlist requirements for your setup, then inspect whether the playout layer continues supplying media. HLS configuration is not a substitute for continuous source output.
Check rights and channel suitability for prerecorded video
Use recordings you have the right to stream, including their audio, and review YouTube’s current rules for copyright and reused content before running a continuous prerecorded channel.
