Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteTo restart a YouTube Live stream after FFmpeg exits, run FFmpeg under a process supervisor configured to launch it again after an unexpected exit. FFmpeg’s reconnect options can help with certain connection problems while FFmpeg is still running; they cannot relaunch a process that has terminated. YouTube’s auto-start setting also does not restart FFmpeg on your computer or server.
What needs to restart: the process, not just the connection
A YouTube encoder stream involves two sides: FFmpeg runs on your host, and YouTube receives its feed. YouTube’s encoder workflow requires the server URL and stream key in the encoder before you start streaming. YouTube’s encoder guide explains this setup.
- Connection recovery: FFmpeg may retry certain HTTP input connections while its process remains alive, depending on the protocol options and installed version.
- Process recovery: A separate host-level supervisor detects that FFmpeg has exited and launches it again.
- YouTube stream settings: Auto-start and auto-stop are Live Control Room settings. They do not relaunch a terminated FFmpeg process. See YouTube’s live stream settings.
The restart policy is not a fix for an invalid command, missing input, incorrect stream key, exhausted disk, or continuing network failure. Inspect the exit reason and logs; otherwise a supervisor may simply repeat the same failure.
Set up automatic process restart
1. Prove the FFmpeg command works by itself
First run your existing FFmpeg command manually and confirm that YouTube receives the feed in Live Control Room. Keep the same command, environment variables, input paths, server URL, and stream key when you move it under supervision. Store the key securely rather than exposing it in public logs or scripts.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Choose a supervisor for your host
Use a process manager appropriate to your operating system or deployment environment. Configure it to start FFmpeg and to relaunch it after an unexpected exit. The exact configuration depends on the supervisor: check whether its policy restarts on a nonzero exit, any exit, or only selected failures. Also account for startup ordering, environment variables, working directory, and access to input files.
Set a measured delay between attempts and a limit on rapid restart loops where the supervisor supports them. These safeguards reduce tight failure loops; they do not correct the underlying fault. Exact commands and configuration syntax vary by operating system and supervisor, so use that tool’s documentation rather than copying a generic unit file or shell loop.

3. Keep FFmpeg’s reconnect settings in their proper role
FFmpeg’s HTTP protocol options include reconnect, reconnect_at_eof, reconnect_on_network_error, reconnect_streamed, and retry or delay controls. They concern specified HTTP input reconnect cases, not relaunching an FFmpeg process that has exited. Consult the FFmpeg HTTP protocol source and verify the option names and behavior against your installed FFmpeg version; the linked source tracks the current master branch and may differ from older releases.
Test that the feed returns
- Start the supervised FFmpeg job and confirm the incoming feed appears in YouTube Live Control Room.
- Deliberately terminate FFmpeg during a test. Confirm the supervisor notices the exit and starts a new process.
- Check supervisor and FFmpeg logs for the original exit reason and the new process’s startup result.
- Confirm the feed returns in Live Control Room, preview the stream, and verify that viewers can access it.
- Test realistic failure conditions, such as stopping the encoder or disconnecting the network, then observe whether your setup recovers. YouTube recommends testing encoders, monitoring stream health, and testing failover in its live streaming tips.
A supervisor can restart FFmpeg, but it cannot ensure YouTube accepts the new feed or that the stream remains uninterrupted. YouTube warns that connectivity disruptions can affect a live stream; allow upload-bandwidth headroom and monitor stream health. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Troubleshoot common restart failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg exits repeatedly | The command, input, permissions, storage, or network has a persistent problem. | Read the FFmpeg error and supervisor logs, verify the input path and available disk space, and confirm network access before changing the restart policy. |
| The supervisor does not relaunch FFmpeg | The policy may not match the exit type, or the supervisor may be watching the wrong process or service. | Check its restart conditions, service state, startup command, working directory, environment, and rate limits. |
| FFmpeg restarts but YouTube does not receive the feed | The new process may lack valid connection details or may fail before opening the output. | Check the FFmpeg startup log and encoder status; confirm the server URL and stream key are current and correctly configured. |
| YouTube reports a stream-key or startup error | The encoder may be using an incorrect or outdated key. | Retrieve the stream key in Live Control Room and update the encoder. Follow YouTube’s stream settings guidance. |
| The feed drops during network trouble | A process restart policy alone does not repair a continuing network fault. | Check connectivity and available upload bandwidth, monitor stream health, and test recovery after the network is restored. |
