How to Run a YouTube Gaming Replay Stream on a Raspberry Pi

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can use a Raspberry Pi in a YouTube gaming replay stream, but the right setup depends on where the replay is playing. A video file stored on the Pi needs a playback-and-streaming path; footage from a console or another computer must first reach the Pi through a compatible capture workflow. In either case, the chain is replay source → Pi input and software → live encoding → YouTube Live. A Pi’s published video-encoding capability is not a guarantee that a complete capture, playback, composition, and streaming setup will work at a particular quality.

First identify where the replay comes from

Before choosing software or cables, work out which of these sources you have. They require different ways to get video into the Pi.

  • A local video file: The file is stored on, or accessible to, the Pi. Streaming software needs a supported way to play that file and send its video and audio to YouTube Live.
  • A console or another computer: Its video output has to enter the Pi through a suitable capture device and workflow. The sources available for this guide do not establish compatibility for any particular capture card, console, cable, or software combination, so confirm those details for your specific equipment.
  • A replay playing in a browser: Determine whether that browser is on the Pi or another device. If it is on another device, its picture and sound still need a supported route into the Pi; simply owning a Pi does not capture the other device’s screen.

Make a note of the source device, the Pi model and operating system, how video and audio will reach the Pi, and the resolution and frame rate you want viewers to receive. Those choices determine the capture hardware, software availability, and encoding load.

Choose a Pi and streaming-software path carefully

What the Pi specifications do—and do not—tell you

Raspberry Pi lists the Pi 4 Model B as supporting H.265 4K at 60 fps decode, H.264 1080p60 decode, and H.264 1080p30 encode in its specifications. Encoding is not the same as decoding: a playback file can decode at one capability while the outgoing live video uses a different encoding capability. Nor does the 1080p30 encode specification prove that a full replay workflow—with input capture, playback, overlays or scene composition, audio, and streaming software—will sustain 1080p30.

Raspberry Pi’s 2026 paper on the Pi 5 says it has no hardware H.264 encoder and uses the libx264 software encoder. The paper reports real-time 1080p30 encoding in low-latency mode using as little as 60% of one CPU core. It also reports that high-quality mode achieved 2–3 dB better PSNR than the Pi 4 hardware encoder at practical tested bitrates of 500 kb/s to 5 Mb/s, using approximately 100–150% of one CPU core. These are the paper’s encoder results, not a test of a complete gaming replay stream or a guarantee for your setup. See the Raspberry Pi 5 H.264 encoding paper.

Verify software and inputs for your exact setup

Use streaming software that is actually available and supported for your Pi model and operating system, and verify that it can access the replay’s video and audio. OBS’s general guidance says hardware encoders are generally recommended for performance because they move encoding work away from the CPU to a specialized component; that does not establish a supported OBS installation path on every Raspberry Pi. OBS also cautions that gameplay, scene rendering, operating-system tasks, and encoding share the machine’s resources. A replay with fast motion or added overlays can make the full workload more demanding than encoding alone. See OBS’s hardware encoding guidance and encoding performance troubleshooting.

Do not assume a particular capture card or a copy-and-paste OBS or FFmpeg recipe will work: compatibility and current installation steps depend on the board, operating system, input, and software version. Confirm those against the relevant device and software documentation before buying equipment or building the stream around them.

Set YouTube Live output for the chosen quality

YouTube’s encoder settings guide recommends RTMPS where supported, H.264 for ordinary SDR video, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds). It lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as video options, but availability of a codec in YouTube’s guide does not mean your Pi software supports it. Match the output to the codec and controls your streaming software can actually provide.

Select resolution, frame rate, and bitrate together

Choose a resolution and frame rate the Pi’s complete workflow can handle, then use the corresponding bitrate range in YouTube’s settings table. The bitrate is not one-size-fits-all: YouTube lists 2–6 Mbps as the range for 720p at 30 fps, for example, not as a universal setting for other resolutions or frame rates. A more detailed image or faster motion may need an appropriate rate within the recommendation; your upload connection must sustain the chosen bitrate with room for normal variation.

YouTube Help recommends running a speed test to check upload bitrate. A speed test is a useful screening check, not a guarantee that the connection will remain stable for a live stream. Prefer a reliable wired connection when your setup permits it, and leave upload headroom rather than choosing a stream rate equal to the best speed-test result.

Include audio and motion in your test

Play a representative section of the replay, including the kinds of motion and audio viewers will hear. Check that sound is present and synchronized, and watch YouTube’s stream-health messages while the test runs. YouTube advises testing with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, monitoring stream health during the event, and reviewing messages. Use a private or unlisted test only if that option is available in your account workflow; visibility and live-feature steps can vary by account.

Run a test and diagnose the result

  1. Confirm the input. Make sure the selected file, browser playback, or capture input is visible to the streaming software and that the intended audio source is included.
  2. Start a test stream. Use the output settings chosen for your target resolution and frame rate, then play a representative portion of the replay rather than testing with a static screen.
  3. Check the stream itself. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages and review the stream from a viewer’s perspective for picture, sound, and synchronization issues.
  4. Watch the Pi’s load and the software’s status. Look for dropped frames or encoder overload. If performance is poor, reduce the workload or output demand and test again rather than assuming the board’s standalone encode specification describes the whole setup.

Common symptoms and what to check

  • No picture: Check that the replay source is connected and selected in the software. With an external console or computer, verify the capture device and its compatibility with the Pi and software; the connection alone does not prove the video is being captured.
  • No sound or sound out of sync: Check which audio source is selected and whether the test includes the replay’s audio. Review synchronization during representative playback before going public.
  • Dropped frames or encoder overload: Reduce the combined work—for example, test a lower output resolution or frame rate, remove unnecessary scene elements, or close other workloads—and compare stream health again. The precise limit depends on the complete configuration.
  • Unstable stream health: Compare the selected bitrate with YouTube’s range for the chosen resolution and frame rate, run an upload speed test, and leave more connection headroom if needed.
  • Unexpectedly poor replay quality: Check the source file or capture path as well as the outgoing settings. YouTube’s encoder recommendations cannot restore detail that is absent or degraded before encoding.

Check rights and YouTube rules before streaming a replay

Only stream gameplay footage and audio you have the rights or permissions to use. A replay can include music, licensed content, voice chat, or other material subject to separate rights. YouTube’s encoder-settings guide is about technical setup; it does not establish that a particular game replay or soundtrack is cleared for broadcast. Review the applicable rights and YouTube policies for your content before streaming, and do not assume that gameplay footage is automatically exempt from copyright claims.
