What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes—but only in a specific mode and release. Project Reclaimer’s v0.9.0 release, dated October 3, 2026, raises the maximum for custom multiplayer games to 64 players. Dedicated servers have a separate 63-player cap and default to 16, while campaign co-op remains capped at 16. These are Project Reclaimer’s stated limits, not independently tested performance figures.
What Project Reclaimer is
Project Reclaimer is a free, unofficial community client for Halo 3 on PC. It uses the player’s existing Steam copy of Halo: The Master Chief Collection (MCC), with Halo 3 installed; it does not include game files. The project describes a separate client with its own menus, server browser, custom-game features, mod support, and dedicated-server tools. Project Reclaimer’s release repository says the client does not modify the Steam installation.
The project documents custom game modes, Forge changes, campaign play and co-op, mod-management features, and ongoing fixes. It also says players can join modded servers that provide the required mods. Those are documented features, not independent test results.
What the 64-player limit actually means
Project Reclaimer’s v0.9.0 release notes, dated October 3, 2026, say custom games can hold up to 64 players. The same notes distinguish that limit from the dedicated-server capacity and campaign co-op limit:

| Play type | Project Reclaimer v0.9.0 limit | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Custom multiplayer game | Up to 64 players | Version-specific maximum stated by the project; it does not indicate how many people are currently playing. |
| Dedicated server | Up to 63 players | The project says the default is 16 players. |
| Campaign co-op | Up to 16 players | The release notes say this remains the cap regardless of the server limit. |
Everyone in a game needs a compatible version. The v0.9.0 notes warn that players using older versions cannot join servers running the new version, and players on the new version cannot join older-version servers.
How to get started
- Meet the stated requirements. The maintainer’s launch post specifies Windows 10 or 11, 64-bit, and a Steam copy of MCC with Halo 3 installed.
- Get the client from the project. Use the current release listed in the release repository. Project Reclaimer says it is free, includes no game files, and does not alter the Steam installation.
- Coordinate versions with other players. Before joining a game, make sure everyone is on a compatible client version; mismatches prevent joining.
- Choose how to play. Join a community server or, if you want to run a persistent server, follow the project’s dedicated-server documentation for Windows or Linux using Docker. Hosting your own server is optional.
How it differs from simply launching Halo 3 in MCC
Project Reclaimer is an alternative community route into Halo 3 multiplayer, not a demonstrated replacement for stock MCC. Its project materials describe a separate client, community server browser, mod support, Forge changes, custom-game options, and self-hosted dedicated-server tooling. The v0.9.0 custom-game maximum is 64 players. The sources cited here do not establish equivalent stock-MCC limits or provide comparative testing, so they do not support a claim that one route is categorically better.

What to know before relying on it
- It is unofficial. The release repository says Project Reclaimer is not affiliated with, endorsed, sponsored, or approved by Microsoft, Xbox Game Studios, Halo Studios, 343 Industries, Bungie, or Activision.
- It is an early build. The maintainer describes the project as early and says play across different networks has not been properly tested. That makes cross-network reliability an open question, not a proven failure or success.
- It is not a classic-game restoration. The maintainer says, “It isn’t a faithful restoration of classic Halo 3. It changes or adds whatever makes it better to play today.” That describes the project’s intent, not an independent assessment of whether the changes improve the game.
- A maximum is not a player-count report. The 64-player figure is a product specification in the v0.9.0 notes; it is not evidence of active population, typical match size, or performance under load.
