How to Run an Always-On YouTube Stream with Docker and FFmpeg

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can use FFmpeg in a Docker container to send prerecorded video to YouTube Live, but Docker does not make a broadcast uninterrupted by itself. You still need a valid YouTube stream URL and key, a host that stays online, a way to notice failures, and a plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive and DVR limits. This guide walks through a self-managed setup and the checks that matter when you want a stream to keep running.

How the Docker and FFmpeg setup works

Docker packages an environment in which FFmpeg runs; it does not host or broadcast the stream on its own. FFmpeg reads a media file, optionally changes its audio or video, and sends the resulting feed to YouTube’s ingest service. YouTube Live Control Room provides the stream URL and stream key, and its incoming preview lets you check whether YouTube is receiving the feed.

  • Your host: a computer or remote machine running Docker and able to stay online.
  • The container: an environment with an FFmpeg build and access to the media file.
  • FFmpeg: the process reading and sending the video.
  • YouTube: the destination, stream controls, and preview. A running container alone does not prove the public stream is healthy.

The steps below describe a general setup, not a tested Docker image or deployment. The appropriate host capacity, FFmpeg build, and encoding choices depend on your media and whether you copy or re-encode its streams.

How do I stream a video to YouTube 24/7?

First decide whether you need one uninterrupted broadcast or a replay that YouTube can archive. A single stream that runs beyond 12 hours may not be captured at all, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If having a YouTube replay matters, plan sessions comfortably shorter than 12 hours, make a local recording, and schedule a deliberate stop and restart. Do not rely on one day-long broadcast to produce an archive.

Prepare YouTube Live Control Room

  1. Confirm the channel is eligible. YouTube’s stated requirements include a verified channel, no live-streaming restriction in the prior 90 days, and a streamer who is at least 16 years old. Account eligibility can affect whether you can start a broadcast.
  2. Create or select a live stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, choose the stream you intend to use and locate its stream settings.
  3. Copy the stream URL and key. The URL identifies YouTube’s ingest destination; the key identifies your stream. Treat the key like a password. Never put it in a public repository, screenshot, published command, or image. If it is exposed, reset it in the stream settings and update the encoder.
  4. Choose RTMPS when available. RTMPS is RTMP carried over TLS/SSL. Use the RTMPS server URL shown in Live Control Room if your FFmpeg build supports it; do not assume an RTMP address found elsewhere is the one YouTube currently supplies for your stream.
  5. Know how the stream is set to start. Start FFmpeg and wait for YouTube’s incoming preview. For a scheduled stream, you may need to click Go live in Live Control Room after the preview appears. Whether the event starts or ends automatically depends on its stream settings.

Prepare the media and container

Make the source available to FFmpeg

Keep the source file somewhere the Docker container can read, such as a directory mounted into the container. Check that the file plays, has the audio you expect, and is long enough for your intended test. For an always-on prerecorded broadcast, decide whether you want to repeat one file or rotate through multiple files; test the chosen sequence before making it public.

Choose copy or re-encode deliberately

Copying the source streams avoids an FFmpeg encoding step, but is appropriate only if the media streams are accepted by YouTube in the output you send. Re-encoding adds processing and requires settings suitable for your source and output. Current YouTube recommendations for bitrate, resolution, frame rate, codec, and keyframe interval are not specified here, so check YouTube’s current guidance and the actual media properties before choosing them. There is no universal command setting that fits every file.

Provide FFmpeg in the image

Use a Docker image in which FFmpeg is installed and available as the container’s command. You can build and maintain your own image or select an image whose contents and maintenance you have verified. The commands below use YOUR_FFMPEG_IMAGE as a stand-in for that choice; they are templates, not a tested image or production deployment.

How do I use FFmpeg to livestream to YouTube?

FFmpeg’s documented pattern for sending a real-time input through the FLV muxer to an RTMP destination uses -re to read the input at real-time pace. For an RTMPS output, use the RTMPS URL and output format supported by your FFmpeg build. YouTube provides the actual server URL and key in Live Control Room; confirm how your encoder expects them combined rather than guessing the address format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Run a short test first

Set the source directory, image name, and complete output destination in your own shell without publishing the stream key. For a file compatible with stream copying, a basic container invocation looks like this:

docker run --rm
  -v "$PWD/media:/media:ro"
  YOUR_FFMPEG_IMAGE
  ffmpeg -re -i /media/video.mp4 -c copy -f flv "$YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL"

YOUTUBE_OUTPUT_URL here means the complete output destination assembled from the current URL and key supplied for your stream. Keep the real value private; do not commit it to a script or repository. The example uses -c copy, which is not suitable for every source. If YouTube does not receive valid audio and video, inspect the source and FFmpeg output, then choose a compatible encoding approach using current YouTube recommendations. Do not infer fixed bitrate or codec settings from this template.

For a repeated single-file source, FFmpeg supports input-looping options; test the loop behavior and end-to-start transition with your actual file before relying on it. A playlist of files with different properties can require a deliberate concat or re-encoding workflow. Do not assume that mounting several files automatically creates a seamless playlist.

Run FFmpeg as the container’s foreground process

The process should remain attached to the container so its output is visible in the container logs. If FFmpeg exits because of an invalid path, incompatible input, or ingest error, the container may stop as well. Docker does not repair every FFmpeg failure or guarantee that YouTube will treat a restarted process as the same healthy live event. Choose any supervision or restart approach only after testing its behavior with your specific stream settings.

How do I run FFmpeg in Docker for a YouTube stream?

  1. Start with an eligible YouTube stream. Create or select it in Live Control Room and copy its current stream URL and key.
  2. Confirm the image and file are available. Verify that the image includes FFmpeg and that the mounted path inside the container points to the intended media.
  3. Set the destination privately. Provide FFmpeg the complete output destination using a private local method. Do not expose the stream key in shared logs, source code, screenshots, or published configuration.
  4. Launch a brief test. Use the command template above only after replacing the image and destination values locally. Observe FFmpeg’s output and check Live Control Room for the incoming preview.
  5. Check actual playback. Confirm both picture and sound in the preview, then verify the viewer-facing watch page on another device or connection where practical.
  6. Move to the intended schedule only after the test passes. Keep the host online and make sure someone or some monitoring process can detect a failed encoder or missing YouTube feed.

There is no universal Docker restart policy that makes a 24/7 YouTube stream reliable. An external supervisor may restart a process in some failure cases, but a restart is not proof that the ingest connection recovered, that the scheduled event remains correct, or that viewers see uninterrupted playback. Test recovery and observe both the encoder and YouTube.

Monitor the feed and plan for failure

A reliable operation needs more than a container status. FFmpeg can continue running while YouTube’s preview or viewer playback is wrong, and a stopped process can leave the live event in an unexpected state.

  • Read encoder logs: look for input, output, connection, and repeated error messages.
  • Check YouTube’s incoming preview: verify that the video arrived and that audio and picture are both present and clear.
  • Check public playback: confirm the stream is accessible from the channel or watch page and on mobile where relevant.
  • Keep a local archive: if preserving the recording matters, record locally and verify that the archive file is growing. YouTube recommends a local archive backup.
  • Test recovery deliberately: test encoder failover or restart behavior before depending on it. A successful process restart does not establish that every ingest interruption will recover.
  • Review accessibility and quality: monitor audio and video quality, and consider whether captions or other accessibility measures are needed for your audience.

FFmpeg documents reconnect controls for certain TCP and TLS errors. They address particular connection failures, not every cause of a broken stream; they do not replace monitoring, a local recording, or a tested recovery plan.

Will YouTube save a 24/7 livestream?

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. Rewinding with DVR may also be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. If the replay is important, use shorter planned sessions and record locally rather than treating a single continuous 24/7 event as a dependable archive method.

Where should the Docker container run?

You can use an existing computer or a remote host if it can stay online and has access to the media and network connection the stream needs. A new small computer is only one possible host; no minimum CPU, memory, or network capacity for this prerecorded workload is established here, so do not buy hardware based on an assumed universal specification. Self-hosting gives you control of the host and FFmpeg configuration, while also leaving you responsible for keeping the process, machine, connection, and monitoring working.

If you do not want to maintain an encoder host, YouTube’s live-streaming guidance lists Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming of prerecorded videos. Check its current capabilities and terms directly before choosing it; no current pricing or service comparison is established here.

Common problems and fixes

YouTube shows no incoming preview

  • Check that the encoder is running and that FFmpeg logs show an active output rather than a connection error.
  • Confirm you copied the current stream URL and key for the selected Live Control Room stream, and that the output address is formed as the encoder expects.
  • Use the RTMPS address supplied for the stream if the FFmpeg build supports it. Check whether the event requires a manual Go live action after preview arrives.

The container exits immediately

  • Check the container logs for a missing FFmpeg executable, incorrect mounted path, misspelled filename, or unreadable media.
  • Run a short local input test before diagnosing YouTube ingest; this separates file or image problems from destination problems.

The preview arrives but audio or video is missing

  • Play the source independently and inspect whether it contains the expected audio and video streams.
  • If using stream copy, check whether the source streams and output are suitable for YouTube. If they are not, use a compatible encoding workflow and settings grounded in current platform guidance.

The feed drops and does not return

  • Inspect FFmpeg logs and the host’s network connection to determine whether the process exited or the ingest connection failed.
  • FFmpeg reconnect options cover certain TCP/TLS errors only. Verify recovery in YouTube’s preview and public playback; do not assume that restarting the container restores the event correctly.

The archive or rewind is missing

  • Check the broadcast duration. Streams exceeding 12 hours may not be archived, and DVR rewind can be limited or unavailable for longer streams.
  • For future broadcasts, schedule sessions shorter than 12 hours and keep a local recording if you need a dependable copy.
