You can use a spare PC to keep a YouTube live stream running by connecting an encoder to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, choosing settings the computer and internet connection can sustain, and preventing the PC from sleeping or losing power. The encoder handles the video; the PC, network, and power supply must keep it running. YouTube’s guidance covers stream setup and health checks, but not the operating-system settings or hardware needed for unattended operation.
Before you start: check channel eligibility and prepare the PC
Confirm that your channel can stream
Your channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming in advance. Its general eligibility guidance sets a minimum age of 16 for live streaming. Check the PC and connection
- Use a PC that can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate continuously without becoming unstable. A spare desktop or laptop may work, but performance depends on its processor, graphics hardware, cooling, and encoder settings.
- Run an upload speed test and choose a bitrate your internet connection can sustain consistently. YouTube’s recommended bitrates are ingest guidance, not a guarantee that a variable home connection will deliver without interruption.
- For a stationary PC, Ethernet is a practical way to avoid depending on Wi-Fi quality. It is not a YouTube requirement; the important point is a reliable connection.
- Check that the machine has adequate ventilation and that its power supply and network equipment can remain on. YouTube does not specify a universal sleep, cooling, UPS, or restart configuration; those depend on your hardware, operating system, and household power.
Create a YouTube stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream. An encoder workflow is useful for a continuous broadcast or a production involving overlays, external audio or video, or screen capture.
- Choose encoder software installed on the spare PC, or connect a standalone hardware encoder. YouTube supports both categories; neither is guaranteed to be more reliable for your particular setup.
- In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your encoder. If the encoder offers a YouTube RTMPS preset, use it. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the encrypted extension of RTMP. See YouTube’s RTMPS instructions.
- Treat the stream key like a password: do not share it or show it in a screen capture. If it may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the new key. YouTube explains stream keys and settings in Manage live stream settings.
Choose video and audio settings the PC can sustain
YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, HEVC/H.265, and AV1 video. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio it lists AAC or MP3 and recommends 128 kbps; for SDR video it recommends Rec. 709. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery. Check its encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the full recommendations for your target codec, resolution, and frame rate.

These are YouTube recommendations, not results from testing your PC or connection. A higher resolution or frame rate increases encoding and upload demands. If the machine struggles, or the stream health indicator reports problems, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate and test again. Select an encoder option your PC can handle; software and hardware encoding performance varies by system.
Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Run a test with audio and movement representative of the real stream. YouTube specifically recommends testing with similar audio and motion.
- Start the encoder and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. Confirm that the video, audio, and selected stream are correct.
- Open the public watch page on another device or browser and confirm that viewers can see and hear the stream.
- While live, watch YouTube’s stream-health indicators and messages. Check them again after changing encoder settings or network equipment. YouTube’s live-streaming tips cover preflight and monitoring.
- If you also record a local archive, verify that the file continues to grow and that the PC has enough free storage for the intended recording period.
- Before relying on continuous operation, observe the actual PC through the conditions it will face: screen lock, sleep behavior, updates, restart, network interruption, and power restoration. Confirm that the encoder resumes as intended. YouTube does not configure or guarantee this computer-level recovery.
Keep the PC running around the clock
Exact menu names differ between Windows and macOS versions, and laptop power settings can behave differently when the lid is closed. Adjust the operating system’s power controls so the computer does not sleep during streaming, and verify the behavior on the spare PC rather than assuming a setting works. If the device is a laptop, check whether closing its lid triggers sleep. Keep the encoder available after a restart if your operating system and encoder support that arrangement.

Install updates deliberately rather than letting an unexpected restart interrupt a broadcast. Make sure fans and vents are clear, and avoid enclosing a PC that needs airflow. A UPS can help bridge brief power interruptions, but the required capacity depends on the PC and attached network equipment; no universal size is established here. For extended outages, only a backup power source sized for the load and duration can keep the setup operating.
There is no universal spare-PC recipe for automatic recovery after every crash, router failure, or power cut. Test recovery steps on your specific operating system and hardware, and arrange a way to check stream health periodically if you cannot watch the screen.

Common problems and what to check
- The encoder cannot connect: Recheck the stream URL and key in Live Control Room, confirm you copied them into the right encoder fields, and make sure the key has not been reset. If it may have been exposed, reset it and replace it in the encoder.
- The preview is blank or the stream will not start: Confirm that the channel is eligible, live streaming has been enabled, and the encoder is sending to the correct stream. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
- Stream health is poor or viewers see buffering: Check the upload connection and lower the bitrate, resolution, or frame rate to a level the PC and network can sustain. YouTube’s bitrate figures are recommendations, not a promise of stable delivery over a fluctuating connection.
- The video stutters or the PC becomes unstable: Reduce the encoding workload by choosing a lower resolution or frame rate, then test again. Check that the PC is ventilated and can maintain the workload continuously.
- The stream stops after the screen goes dark or the lid closes: Review the computer’s sleep and lid behavior. Screen-off and sleep are different states; test which one the machine enters.
- The broadcast stops after an update, restart, or power failure: Check whether the encoder relaunched and reconnected, and whether the PC and router restored power as expected. YouTube’s reviewed setup guidance does not configure automatic restart behavior.
- The stream key appears in a recording or screenshot: Reset the key in Live Control Room and update the encoder before streaming again.
