OBS Studio is the best free starting point for looping a sermon on YouTube: use its Media Source for one recording, or its VLC Video source to rotate a playlist. OBS runs on your own computer, so the computer, power and internet connection must stay available for the stream to continue.
Which free tool should you use?
| Option | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Loop one sermon or cycle a playlist from a local computer | Free, open-source software; VLC must also be installed for OBS’s VLC Video source. |
| PRISM Live Studio | Live production as an alternative encoder | YouTube lists it as a no-charge streaming option, but its listing does not document a 24/7 prerecorded-file looping workflow. |
| Streamlabs | Live production with features such as alerts, shortcuts, tipping and overlays | YouTube lists no-charge features; the cited listing does not establish continuous prerecorded-file looping. |
OBS is the strongest match here because its documentation covers looping a local video and repeating a playlist. OBS Project says it is free for any use under GPLv2, with no watermark or usage limitation, and YouTube lists it as encoder software. See the OBS Help Portal and YouTube’s encoder guidance.
Loop one sermon recording in OBS
- Add a Media Source. In your OBS scene, use Sources to add a Media Source, then select the sermon video file. OBS documents supported formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI and WebM.
- Enable Loop. Open the Media Source properties and turn on its Loop option. The recording will restart when it reaches the end.
- Check the scene before streaming. Play the source in OBS and confirm the video and audio are present and framed as intended. OBS’s Media Sources documentation describes the available loop controls: OBS Media Sources.
Loop a playlist of sermons
- Install VLC first. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC being installed. If you use 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add VLC Video as a source and add the sermon recordings to its playlist in the order you want them to play.
- Keep playlist looping enabled. OBS documents Loop Playlist as on by default; check the source properties rather than assuming it is enabled.
- Test the full sequence. Check each file and the transitions between files before relying on the playlist for an extended broadcast.
These source options and their properties are documented by the OBS Project.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Prepare the YouTube broadcast. Open YouTube Live Control Room and create or schedule a live stream.
- Copy the encoder details. In YouTube’s stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key into the corresponding OBS stream settings.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it like a password: do not show it on-screen or share it publicly. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube and update OBS.
- Start OBS and verify the feed. Start streaming from OBS, then confirm the preview and stream health in Live Control Room before leaving the broadcast unattended.
YouTube says first-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. That is a setup allowance, not a promise that activation will take that long, so prepare a new channel ahead of the planned service. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.

Settings and reliability for a continuous stream
Use settings suited to your upload and resolution
There is no single bitrate to prescribe without knowing your video resolution, encoder settings and available upload bandwidth. Start with OBS’s Auto Configuration Wizard, then check YouTube’s current recommended encoder settings for the intended resolution and network conditions. Avoid choosing a bitrate your connection cannot sustain.
Keep the local setup available
With OBS running locally, the computer is part of the broadcast system: it must stay powered on, awake, connected to the internet and running OBS. A looping workflow guide recommends disabling sleep and disruptive restarts, checking stream health and monitoring at least one complete playlist cycle. These are practical workflow precautions, not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming. If a suitable computer is not available to leave running, a dedicated computer is optional rather than a requirement of OBS itself.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume a 24/7 broadcast will be preserved as one complete archive; plan separate recordings or other ways to retain the sermon if a full recording matters. See YouTube’s live-stream guidance.
Copyright applies to sermon streams
Before broadcasting, confirm that your church has rights to the sermon recording and to any music, images or other third-party material in it. YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can cause a placeholder to replace the stream; if the material remains, YouTube may interrupt or terminate the broadcast. Even licensed material can be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted the channel through Content ID. Church use alone does not establish that every included work is cleared. Details: YouTube’s live-stream copyright guidance.

Free encoder or cloud streaming?
OBS has no software charge, but a local 24/7 stream depends on your own running computer, power and internet. A cloud service runs the stream remotely after setup, avoiding the need to keep that computer on. YouTube’s encoder page lists Gyre as a cloud service for 24/7 prerecorded streams, but does not establish it as free; check its current price and plan limits directly rather than treating cloud hosting as a free tool.
