You can keep a pre-recorded video streaming to YouTube Live from a Linux VPS by uploading the file, configuring FFmpeg to send it to YouTube’s ingest server, and monitoring the process. Your own computer can then be off, but the VPS, its network connection, the media file, and the encoder must remain available. YouTube does not prescribe a specific FFmpeg-on-VPS recipe; this is a self-managed implementation of its encoder workflow.
Check YouTube live-stream eligibility first
Before renting or configuring a server, confirm that the channel is eligible to go live. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified, must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and the account holder must be at least 16 years old. A VPS cannot bypass a channel restriction.
Live content must follow YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Confirm that you have the rights needed for every video and audio track you stream; the general policy does not determine whether you hold rights to a particular work. See YouTube’s live-streaming policies.
What you need
- A verified, eligible YouTube channel and access to YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A Linux VPS with enough storage for the media file, sufficient CPU if you need to transcode, and sustained outbound bandwidth for the selected stream bitrate.
- A pre-recorded video file accessible on the VPS.
- FFmpeg installed on the VPS.
- The YouTube stream server URL and stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not publish it in a script repository, screenshot, or exposed log.
There is no single best VPS size or provider established for this workflow. The right plan depends on whether FFmpeg can copy the existing codecs or must transcode, how much storage the file needs, the stream bitrate, and the provider’s sustained transfer allowance and network quality.

Create a YouTube stream and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to open Live Control Room.
- Create or select the stream and locate its server URL and stream key in the stream settings.
- Copy the exact ingest URL and key shown for that stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder. Prefer the RTMPS endpoint when YouTube provides it.
- Store the key in a file readable only by the account that runs FFmpeg, or inject it through a protected service configuration. Avoid placing it in a public repository or sharing it in command output and logs.
YouTube’s encoder setup instructions describe the URL-and-key connection. For the secure ingest protocol, its developer documentation explains RTMPS ingestion: RTMP carried over SSL/TLS, using the appropriate endpoint and port 443. Use the endpoint displayed for your stream rather than copying an old example URL.
Upload the video and choose copy or transcode
Transfer the source file to the VPS using a method and account you control, then confirm the file is present and readable by the user that will run FFmpeg. Decide whether to stream-copy or transcode based on the source codecs and timing. Stream-copy avoids re-encoding but is appropriate only when the source is compatible with YouTube’s ingest requirements; otherwise, transcode to a compatible format and settings.
YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend H.264 video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds), and list 17 Mbps as the recommended H.264 video bitrate for 1080p60. These are published recommendations, not a guarantee of viewer quality. Match resolution and frame rate to the source and choose a bitrate your VPS can sustain on upload.

Estimate outbound bandwidth
A 17 Mbps video stream sends about 7.65 GB of video data per hour before protocol overhead: 17 megabits per second × 3,600 seconds ÷ 8. Audio and transport overhead add to that total. For continuous streaming, multiply the hourly estimate by the intended running hours, then compare it with the VPS plan’s actual outbound-transfer allowance. This arithmetic is an estimate, not a provider-specific allowance or price.

First check that FFmpeg is installed and inspect the source streams with ffprobe. If the video and audio codecs are compatible and the file’s timing is suitable, a stream-copy command can avoid transcoding:

If the input is not compatible, transcode instead. This example produces H.264 video and AAC audio, requests CBR at 17 Mbps for a 1080p60 target, and uses a two-second keyframe interval:

-f flv "$YOUTUBE_RTMPS_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"Use this only when 1080p60 is appropriate for the source and the VPS can encode and upload it continuously. At 60 frames per second, a 120-frame GOP is two seconds. If the source has a different frame rate or resolution, adjust the output deliberately rather than forcing an unsuitable conversion. YouTube’s 17 Mbps figure is its recommendation for H.264 at 1080p60; choose an appropriate published setting for other targets. Transcoding also consumes CPU, and a VPS that cannot keep pace can drop frames or fall behind.
The -re option reads a file at approximately its playback rate; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The process itself is not immortal: an FFmpeg exit, server reboot, lost network, or YouTube disconnect can interrupt the broadcast.

Keep the process supervised and verify the broadcast
Run FFmpeg under a process supervisor such as systemd rather than relying on an interactive SSH session. Configure the service to start after reboot, restart on failure, and write logs somewhere you can inspect. Restrict access to the service configuration because it contains the stream credential. Add monitoring or alerts for process exits and sustained network failure; automatic restart helps with a process crash but does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.
- Start the service and check its status and recent logs on the VPS.
- In Live Control Room, wait for the encoder preview and check stream health before using the available control to go live.
- Confirm that the stream is still running after disconnecting your SSH session.
- Test the recovery plan: determine whether a restarted encoder reconnects to the intended stream, whether operator action is required, and what happens if the broadcast has ended.
YouTube’s broadcast API documentation describes broadcast resources and a 24/7 arrangement in which an ongoing broadcast can continue while a separate interview broadcast is created and later completed. That API pattern is distinct from the incoming encoder stream; it does not guarantee that an unattended FFmpeg process cannot disconnect, and most single-stream setups do not need to use the API.

- No preview or connection rejected: check that the server URL and key belong to the selected stream, that the key was copied correctly, and that the VPS can make an outbound connection to the provided RTMPS endpoint on port 443.
- Preview appears but the stream is unstable: check FFmpeg logs, CPU load, dropped-frame indicators, and sustained outbound capacity. Lower the output resolution or bitrate if the source and YouTube settings allow it and the VPS cannot maintain the target.
- FFmpeg exits at the end of the file: confirm the loop option is present and placed as intended for the input. Inspect logs for a decode or muxing error rather than assuming the loop flag can recover a damaged file.
- Video plays but audio is missing or rejected: inspect the source audio stream and choose a compatible audio codec when transcoding. Stream-copy only works when the source streams are acceptable.
- The process stops after SSH disconnects or a reboot: run it under a system service or other supervisor configured to start on boot and restart after failure; an interactive shell alone is not an uptime plan.
- The encoder reconnects but the broadcast does not resume as expected: review the stream and broadcast state in Live Control Room and the chosen recovery procedure. The result depends on encoder behavior and stream configuration.
- YouTube restricts or removes the stream: check channel eligibility and policy notifications in YouTube Studio. A server-side change cannot override a platform restriction.
Costs and responsibilities of the VPS approach
Budget for the VPS rental, storage, and any outbound-transfer charges, then account for the time needed to install updates, protect credentials, monitor logs, and repair failures. If you transcode, CPU capacity matters; if you stream-copy, source compatibility matters instead. Provider-specific prices, transfer limits, and performance vary, so compare current plan terms for the VPS region and workload you intend to use. No particular server size, price, or uptime level is established for every stream.
