Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo stream a gaming VOD stored in Google Drive as a YouTube Live event, make the video available on your computer, then play it through an encoder such as OBS that sends the feed to YouTube. In YouTube Studio, create the event and enter its stream URL and key in the encoder. A Drive share link is for viewing; it is not a substitute for the encoder’s live feed.
Before you start
- Your YouTube channel must be verified, have no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days, and meet YouTube’s minimum age requirement of 16. First-time live-streaming enablement can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well before your planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility requirements explain the current rules.
- You need access to the VOD as a local file or a file made available offline through Drive for desktop. Confirm you have enough disk space if downloading or mirroring a large recording.
- You need encoder software, a stable upload connection, and the YouTube event’s stream URL and key.
Get the VOD out of Drive and ready for the encoder
Google Drive’s browser player and sharing functions let people view a video; they do not, by themselves, send it as a YouTube Live broadcast. The encoder is the bridge: it plays the video and transmits the resulting live feed to YouTube.
Option 1: Download a local copy
- Open Google Drive on your computer and select the video.
- Choose Download and save the file somewhere easy to locate in your encoder.
- Check that the download completed and that the file plays locally before scheduling the stream.
The owner can disable downloads for people with viewer or commenter access. If you do not see Download, ask the owner for permission or a downloadable copy. Google also notes that browser third-party-cookie settings or extensions can interfere with downloads, and unusually high recent views or downloads may trigger a temporary restriction that typically resets within 24 hours. See Google Drive’s download instructions and download troubleshooting.
Option 2: Use Drive for desktop
Drive for desktop can stream files while you are online or mirror them to your computer. Streaming uses little local storage but depends on the connection and file availability throughout playback. Mirroring stores a local copy and consumes disk space; make sure the file is actually available offline before going live, rather than relying on an online-only placeholder. Google explains the differences in its Drive for desktop streaming and mirroring guide.

| Method | Local disk use | Offline reliability | Connection dependence |
|---|---|---|---|
| Download or mirror the VOD | Uses space for the local video file. | The file is available locally once the download or mirror is complete. | Internet is needed to obtain the file, but playback does not rely on Drive fetching it continuously. |
| Stream through Drive for desktop | Uses little local storage compared with keeping a full local copy. | Do not assume the file is offline; verify availability before the broadcast. | Playback depends on the internet connection and file availability. |
For a large public download that repeatedly hits Drive’s temporary restrictions, Google recommends using dedicated hosting instead. This workflow does not require extra storage if your computer already has room for a reliable local copy; an external SSD is only an optional solution when local space is the constraint.
Set up the YouTube event and encoder
- Create or schedule the event. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. YouTube’s encoder workflow covers creating the event and going live.
- Copy the stream details. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to send video to that stream. Do not post it publicly, and replace it if it is exposed.
- Add the VOD as the encoder’s media source. In OBS or another encoder, add the downloaded or offline-available video using its media/file-source option. OBS’s precise interface labels can vary by version; the important distinction is to select the local video file, not paste a Drive sharing URL and expect it to function as a live input.
- Configure the output and test. YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP, for standard live streaming. Set a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate that your upload connection can sustain. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval where available, and do not exceed a four-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s codec guidance for RTMP/RTMPS includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps; use settings supported by your encoder and intended stream. See YouTube’s encoder settings recommendations.
- Check the preview, then start. Start the encoder’s feed and wait for the incoming video to appear in YouTube Studio. Check picture, audio, and stream health before clicking the event’s Go Live control. Test with movement and sound similar to the actual VOD, not just a static screen.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep YouTube Studio’s stream-health indicators open and watch for dropped frames or other warnings. YouTube recommends testing upload bandwidth and leaving about 20% headroom; download speed is not a reliable substitute for checking outbound upload capacity. Its streaming tips cover preparation and testing.
HLS is an alternative for specific cases, such as certain HDR or codec requirements, but YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends video in segments. OBS is listed as supporting HLS output. For an ordinary gaming VOD restream using standard encoder settings, RTMPS is the practical default; choose HLS only when you have a reason to use it. See YouTube’s HLS setup guide.

End the stream and protect the recording
When the event is over, end it in YouTube Studio and stop the encoder. YouTube automatically archives streams shorter than 12 hours, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured. If the VOD matters, keep the original file or make a separate local recording; do not treat the YouTube archive as the only copy. Details are in YouTube’s encoder streaming and archiving instructions.
Troubleshooting
- There is no Download option in Drive: The owner may have disabled downloads for viewers or commenters. Request a downloadable copy or suitable access.
- The Drive download fails: Check browser cookie settings and extensions, then retry. If Drive reports a temporary restriction after unusually high recent downloads or views, wait for it to reset; Google says it typically clears within 24 hours.
- The video plays in Drive, but the encoder cannot use it: Drive playback does not establish a direct encoder input. Download the file or make it available offline, then select that file in the encoder’s media-source controls.
- The stream drops frames or YouTube reports poor health: Check outbound upload bandwidth, leave headroom, and reduce bitrate or resolution if needed. Test the adjusted settings before the event.
- There is no archive after the event: Check the stream duration. Streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured, so retain a local copy or recording.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos without leaving a computer on, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploaded video as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
