Then reduce PC workload one setting at a time and check that stream quality and stability remain acceptable. There is no sound universal estimate in rupees—or typical watt figure—for an Indian 24/7 stream: both depend on your equipment and local billing details.
Measure what the whole streaming setup uses
Start with the average power draw in watts while your usual stream is running. A computer’s power-supply rating is its capacity, not a measurement of how much electricity the complete setup draws. A generic online estimate is no substitute for a reading from your own equipment.
Include the devices you want to count
Use a plug-in energy meter that reports watts and, ideally, accumulated kWh. Connect the equipment you want included in the estimate: the streaming PC or encoder, any display that stays on, networking gear, capture equipment and dedicated cooling. Check that the meter fits your local plug and is rated for the load. The meter helps you measure; it does not itself reduce consumption. The Bureau of Energy Efficiency’s demand-side-management guidance supports informed energy management, not the accuracy of any particular meter.
Measure ordinary streaming conditions
Let the stream run with your normal scenes, sources and settings, and record the average draw over a representative period. If the load varies, a longer observation or accumulated kWh reading is more useful than a momentary watt reading. Keep the measurement conditions consistent when comparing changes.

Convert watts into daily and monthly energy
Use the average whole-setup draw—not the PC’s advertised power-supply capacity—in this calculation:
- Daily energy: average watts × 24 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per day.
- 30-day planning month: average watts × 720 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per 30 days. Equivalently, average watts × 0.72 = monthly kWh.
The 720-hour month is a planning assumption for continuous operation, not a measured statistic. For example, if your meter reads W average watts, your 30-day energy estimate is W × 0.72 kWh. Insert your own reading; no representative watt figure for Indian YouTube streams is established here.

Work out the cost using your own electricity bill
Multiply the energy used by the applicable marginal energy rate to estimate the variable energy charge. Then account for the rest of your bill: fixed charges, monthly slabs, duties, taxes, fuel adjustments and any subsidy. The resulting bill impact may differ from a simple kWh-times-rate calculation.
India’s Ministry of Power says state electricity regulatory commissions determine retail tariffs, and state governments may subsidize consumer classes. The Central Electricity Authority’s annual publication, Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average rates of Electricity Supply in India, analyses state commission orders. Your state, DISCOM, consumer category and monthly consumption slab matter, so use your current bill and the applicable local order rather than a single rupee-per-kWh rate for India.

Check whether time-of-day rates apply to you
A Ministry of Power release dated 23 June 2023 describes a time-of-day tariff framework in which designated solar hours—a daily eight-hour period specified by the State Electricity Regulatory Commission—have rates 10%–20% below normal rates, while peak-hour rates are 10%–20% above normal. The release said the framework applies to commercial and industrial consumers with maximum demand of 10 kW and above from 1 April 2024, and to other non-agricultural consumers latest from 1 April 2025; for smart-meter consumers, it takes effect after installation. These are framework details from that dated release, not confirmation that a particular household currently has those rates or schedules. Check your DISCOM bill and current state rules. As Union Minister for Power and New & Renewable Energy Shri R. K. Singh put it in that release: “With awareness and effective utilization of ToD tariff mechanism, consumers can reduce their electricity bills.”
Reduce streaming-PC workload without destabilizing the stream
Change one setting at a time, then check YouTube’s stream health, dropped frames, encoder overload and the audio and video. Compare meter readings over comparable durations and conditions; otherwise, you cannot tell whether a change caused the difference.

Try a hardware encoder, but verify watts and quality
OBS’s Hardware Encoding guide (11 January 2022) explains that hardware encoding moves video encoding from the CPU to a specialized GPU component and generally recommends it for performance. OBS names NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync and Apple VideoToolbox support; actual compatibility depends on the computer, drivers and current software. Some older encoder generations may produce lower image quality than software encoding at similar bitrates. Lower CPU load does not prove lower whole-system power use, so measure the wall draw before and after and check the output quality.
Lower output demands only as far as your stream allows
OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide (12 June 2021) suggests reducing output resolution or frame rate when resources are constrained—for example, changing 60 fps to 30 fps if 60 is not working. It also recommends simplifying demanding scenes and limiting expensive sources, including unnecessary browser-source work. These are performance suggestions, not guaranteed energy savings. A lower resolution or frame rate may be unacceptable for your content, so judge the result by measured consumption, stream stability and viewer-facing quality.

YouTube supports streaming by webcam, mobile device or encoder; an encoder converts video into a digital format for YouTube. A PC running OBS is therefore one possible setup, not a requirement for every YouTube stream. If you use an encoder-based setup, check current YouTube and OBS guidance for the device and software version in use. For any equipment or settings change, compare the same setup over the same number of streaming hours, with similar scenes, stream settings and operating conditions. Record the average wall watts or accumulated kWh, and note whether uptime, room temperature or production settings changed. Apply your actual tariff periods and bill components to the energy difference.
If a hardware purchase is involved, compare its cost with measured monthly rupee savings before estimating payback. Without local purchase prices, a current tariff and before-and-after readings, a payback period cannot be calculated. No particular PC or encoder is established as the lowest-power option for this use.
