How to Run a YouTube Live Stream of Retro Gaming Footage on Repeat

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To loop prerecorded retro gaming footage in a YouTube live stream, add the video file to an OBS Studio scene as a Media Source, enable that source’s loop option, and send OBS to YouTube Live using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. Preview the feed and check the loop transition before starting the broadcast. You do not need a console or capture card unless you are capturing live output from a physical console.

What you need for a prerecorded loop

  • A video file of footage you have the right to use for the intended stream.
  • OBS Studio, which can play the file as a source and encode the feed for YouTube.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to livestream, with live streaming enabled.
  • A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the stream.

YouTube describes encoders as a way to stream gameplay and overlays, among other sources. For a video file that already exists, OBS can be both the playback source and encoder. A capture card is not part of this basic workflow.

Prepare YouTube Live before the broadcast

YouTube Help says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Its current live-streaming help page states that streamers must be at least 16. Enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until broadcast day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.

  1. In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
  2. Create or schedule the stream in Live Control Room and open its stream settings.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key. The key lets an encoder send video to the correct stream, so treat it like a password: do not show it on stream or share it publicly.

Set up the repeating video in OBS

  1. Open OBS and select or create the scene you want to broadcast.
  2. In the Sources panel, choose + and add a Media Source. Select the existing retro gaming video file.
  3. In the Media Source properties, enable Loop. OBS’s Media Source documentation describes the source’s playback controls; exact labels can vary by OBS version. If the file does not restart, reopen the source properties and confirm looping is enabled.
  4. Fit the source to the canvas and inspect the framing. Check that the footage is not unexpectedly cropped, stretched, or surrounded by unwanted empty space.
  5. Check the audio level and content. Make sure game audio, music, and any other sound are appropriate for the broadcast and rights-cleared.
  6. Play through the end of the file and into its restart. Look and listen for an unintended black frame, pause, audio pop, or abrupt change in volume. Adjust the edit or audio fade in the video file if needed, then recheck the transition.

Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube as the service, and enter the stream key from YouTube Live Control Room. If OBS requests a server or stream URL, use the URL shown in the same YouTube stream settings. Keep the key private.
  2. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the encoder feed to appear in YouTube Live Control Room preview.
  3. Before going live, inspect picture, framing, sound, and playback. Confirm that the video reaches its end and starts again as expected.
  4. Start the broadcast in Live Control Room when the preview is ready. Keep OBS running and monitor the stream and audio during the broadcast.

Bandwidth and reliability checks

YouTube recommends that available upload bandwidth exceed the total stream bitrate, with 20% headroom. For example, if the total bitrate configured for the stream is 5 Mbps, aim for at least 6 Mbps of available upload bandwidth; other devices and network activity can reduce what is available to OBS. YouTube’s streaming tips also recommend setting up ahead of time, previewing before going live, checking the watch page and mobile playback, and monitoring audio and video.

  • Check the public watch page on a second device, including a phone, for playback and sound.
  • Watch the loop boundary specifically; a stream can be stable overall while the file restart still produces a visible or audible glitch.
  • For a long broadcast, keep an eye on OBS and the YouTube preview instead of assuming the connection and source will remain healthy unattended.

Rights, copyright, and archived streams

Use gameplay footage, music, and other audio only when you have the rights needed for the intended use. Whether a particular game publisher permits a particular stream depends on the rights and circumstances; the setup process itself does not establish permission.

YouTube says live streams are scanned for third-party content matches. It may replace the picture with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued matching content can lead to interruption or termination. A license from a rights holder may not by itself prevent that interruption: YouTube says the creator may need the rights holder to add the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Archived streams can also receive Content ID claims after the live broadcast ends. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and resolve rights questions before broadcasting.

If you want to capture a physical retro console

For live console output rather than an existing video file, the signal needs a capture path into the computer running OBS. That may involve a capture card, but compatibility depends on the console’s output and the card and computer. Before buying hardware, check connector and signal compatibility, supported resolution and frame rate, operating-system support, and whether it captures game audio. No particular console and capture-card combination is established here, so verify the exact models with their manufacturers.

Common problems and fixes

  • OBS is sending no picture to YouTube: Confirm that the correct scene is active, the Media Source points to the intended file, OBS is streaming, and the stream key and URL match the YouTube event.
  • The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and check that Loop is enabled.
  • The source is cropped or incorrectly framed: Refit or reposition the source on the OBS canvas, then inspect it in YouTube’s preview before going live.
  • The stream buffers or disconnects: Compare available upload bandwidth with the total configured bitrate and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce competing network use or lower the stream bitrate if capacity is insufficient.
  • YouTube shows a warning or placeholder: Check for third-party material in the video or audio. Resolve the rights issue; where a rights holder has licensed the material, ask whether the channel must be placed on the Content ID allowlist.
  • The loop restart has a pause or audio pop: Review the end and beginning of the source file, make an edit or fade if needed, and test the full transition again before broadcasting.
