How to Make a 24/7 Kids’ Cartoon Livestream Restart Automatically Every Day

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To restart a 24/7 kids’ cartoon livestream as a fresh YouTube event each day, automate two separate things: the encoder that sends the video and the YouTube broadcast that represents that day’s event. YouTube’s auto-start and auto-stop controls react to encoder data; they do not create tomorrow’s broadcast for you.

First decide what “restart every day” should mean

A daily encoder restart and a new daily YouTube event are not the same outcome. Choose the lifecycle you want before setting a schedule.

  • Fresh daily event and archive: prepare a separate YouTube broadcast for each day, then bind it to the configured ingest stream. This is the appropriate design when you want a distinct event/archive every day.
  • Reconnect after a brief interruption: keep the same event available for reconnection if the encoder drops briefly. This is a different lifecycle choice; do not assume that restarting the encoder will create a new event.

YouTube distinguishes a liveStream, which holds the ingest configuration, from a liveBroadcast, which represents the event. A configured stream can be reused with separate broadcast resources for recurring events, with only one event live at a time in the described workflow. Google’s Live Streaming API documentation describes a stream as the transmission configuration; the broadcast resource documentation covers the event.

Set up an automatic daily restart

  1. Confirm livestreaming is available on the channel. Check the channel’s eligibility and restrictions in YouTube Studio. Account or channel restrictions can prevent a correctly configured schedule from going live. Review YouTube’s livestreaming restrictions.
  2. Choose the daily event plan. Decide whether each day needs its own event/archive or whether you only need to recover the same event after a short encoder outage. For a fresh daily event, prepare a broadcast for each date.
  3. Configure the encoder to use the ingest stream. In YouTube Studio’s live setup or through the API, select or create the stream configuration, then enter its stream key in the encoder. Treat the key as a secret: do not publish it or include it in shared screenshots. YouTube describes the stream as the settings for sending audio-video content to the service.
  4. Prepare and bind the next broadcast. Schedule the day’s event in YouTube Studio/Live Control Room or manage its lifecycle through the API, and bind it to the configured stream. Before the scheduled start, verify that the broadcast is in a state that permits the transition you intend to make. YouTube documents broadcast states and allowed transitions in its live broadcast lifecycle guide.
  5. Set auto-start and auto-stop intentionally. With these controls enabled, encoder data arriving can start a broadcast, and stopping the encoder transmission can end it. YouTube’s lifecycle guide says the automatic end happens about a minute after transmission stops. This can end today’s event, but it does not prepare or schedule the next one.
  6. Schedule the encoder cycle in your own operating environment. Use an appropriate system scheduler, managed service, or process supervisor to stop and start the encoder at the desired time. Ensure the next start uses the intended stream and that the next broadcast has already been prepared and is eligible to go live. The exact scheduler setup depends on your operating system and encoder; the YouTube API documentation does not establish a particular script or deployment.
  7. Check both ingest and event state. In the API, streamStatus of active means YouTube is receiving encoder data. Also check that the broadcast itself has entered the expected state. A running encoder alone does not prove viewers can see a live event.
  8. Declare the audience accurately. Mark the cartoon as Made for Kids when it is intended for children. YouTube restricts or disables features for Made for Kids content, including live chat, chat replay, comments on livestream archives, reminder notifications, and personalized ads. These settings affect the audience experience, not the restart mechanism. See YouTube’s guidance on content made for kids.

What to monitor each day

  • Encoder process: confirm the scheduled stop and next start occurred, and that the encoder is sending to the correct stream.
  • Ingest status: confirm YouTube is receiving data; an active stream status is evidence of ingest, not proof that the broadcast is live.
  • Broadcast state: check that the correct day’s event is bound and has reached the intended live or ended state.
  • Video and audio: check the live preview or monitoring view for playback, sound, and unexpected gaps or frozen frames.
  • Content rights and audience settings: make sure the video and audio are permitted for livestreaming and that the Made for Kids declaration matches the content.

Common restart problems

Symptom Likely cause What to check or do
The encoder is running, but no YouTube event is live. There is no prepared broadcast eligible to start, or the broadcast is in a state that does not allow the expected transition. Check the broadcast resource/state, its binding to the stream, and whether the event is scheduled or ready to go live.
Today’s event ends, but tomorrow’s does not start. Auto-stop ended the current broadcast, but no next-day broadcast was created or prepared. Automate broadcast preparation as well as the encoder schedule, or prepare the next event in advance.
The encoder restarts but viewers see the same event. The encoder was restarted without creating or selecting a fresh broadcast. Decide whether you need a new daily archive. If so, prepare and bind a separate broadcast for the new date.
The stream shows no incoming data. The encoder may be stopped, using the wrong stream key, or sending to the wrong ingest configuration. Check the encoder’s output settings and the selected YouTube stream. Keep the stream key private.
A scheduled event fails despite the correct encoder settings. Channel livestream restrictions, an ineligible broadcast state, or a missed lifecycle step can block it. Review the channel’s livestream eligibility and the broadcast’s current state before changing the encoder schedule.
A short encoder interruption ends the event unexpectedly. Auto-stop is enabled and YouTube ends the broadcast after transmission stops; the lifecycle guide says this takes about a minute. Choose deliberately whether brief outages should end the event. If you need a fresh daily event, still arrange the next broadcast separately.

DIY scheduling versus running the stream in the cloud

A self-hosted encoder gives you control over the process and schedule, but the computer and its internet connection must remain available whenever the stream needs to run. Your scheduler also has to coordinate encoder starts with YouTube broadcast preparation and state.

Copyright and channel expectations for kids’ cartoons

Using cartoons in a livestream does not itself give you permission to broadcast them. Confirm that you own or have permission to use the video and audio, and review YouTube’s copyright rules before scheduling recurring streams. Set the Made for Kids audience designation accurately; it changes available features and ad personalization, but it does not make the content rights-compliant or automate daily restarts.
