Use OBS Studio to keep the presenter’s microphone and prerecorded music as separate audio sources, then balance and monitor them together before going live. That gives you independent control over speech and music; it does not grant permission to use the music. Confirm that your rights cover both the live broadcast and any replay, and arrange Content ID allowlisting for licensed tracks where needed.
Set up the voice-and-music mix in OBS
- Add the presenter’s microphone. In OBS, add the microphone as an audio input source. Confirm that the correct device is selected and that its meter responds when the presenter speaks.
- Add the music playback. Bring the playback application’s audio into OBS. Depending on your operating system and setup, this may be a desktop-audio source or a separate application-audio source. Check that the music appears on its own mixer channel rather than being combined with the microphone.
- Keep the sources independently controllable. Use OBS’s per-source faders and mute buttons so you can lower or mute music during speech or announcements without changing microphone level. The exact routing option depends on the operating system and devices in use.
- Set input levels before fine-tuning in OBS. Adjust microphone gain at the microphone, interface, or physical mixer, and music level in its playback application or device. Then use OBS faders for the final balance. OBS recommends starting with the device or application controls rather than relying only on the software fader.
- Balance by meter and by ear. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide suggests speech in the upper part of the yellow range and background music in green. Treat those ranges as guidance, not a universal target: meter readings that look similar can sound very different. Listen to the result, and avoid pushing speech into the red, where clipping and distortion are at risk.
- Monitor and make a rehearsal recording. Listen through the source device, then use OBS Audio Monitoring to check the monitored mix. Record a normal session and play the file back before broadcasting; check speech clarity, music level, routing, and left/right channel balance.
OBS documents source faders, meters, mute controls, and monitoring in its Audio Mixer Guide. OBS describes the software as open source under GPLv2, free for commercial use, and without watermarks or feature limitations in its Help Portal.
Check music rights before you go live
Audio routing and music permission are separate issues. YouTube says it scans all live streams for matches to third-party content, including another live broadcast. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn you to stop using the content; if the content remains, the stream may be interrupted or terminated. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams.
A license alone may not prevent a live interruption. YouTube advises broadcasters using licensed third-party content to ask the rights holder to add their channel to the Content ID allowlist. If the stream is archived, Content ID claims can also arise after it ends.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s livestream terms and conditions put responsibility on the content provider to have the rights needed for worldwide exploitation of live content, including relevant music rights. The permissions you need depend on the tracks, rights holders, territories, and whether you retain or share a replay. Verify those details for your use rather than assuming that a track cleared for one purpose is cleared for all of them.
Choosing music sources
- YouTube Audio Library: YouTube describes Audio Library music and sound effects as copyright-safe on its Audio Library help page. Check each track’s terms: some require attribution, and Creative Commons tracks require credit in the video description. The page focuses on using music in videos, so do not treat it as blanket clearance for every live-radio format or for use outside YouTube. Check the live-stream terms too.
- Creator Music: YouTube’s Creator Music FAQ says it does not support licensing for live content; track-use details exclude live streams. Availability and supported regions can vary.
- Commercial or “royalty-free” libraries: A marketing label does not establish that a license covers YouTube live broadcasts, archived replays, every territory, or Content ID handling. Read the actual license and ask how the provider handles channel allowlisting. YouTube says it cannot vouch for music libraries other than its own Audio Library.
Make the mix reliable for the broadcast
Before going live
- Confirm the microphone and music meters respond on separate OBS channels.
- Listen to both the source devices and OBS’s monitored output; use headphones if practical.
- Make and replay a recording of a representative session. Check that the music does not mask speech and that audio is present in both channels as intended.
- Verify music rights for the live use, replay, and relevant territories. If the music is licensed third-party content, ask the owner to allowlist your YouTube channel through Content ID.
If something sounds wrong
- Music is missing: Check that OBS is capturing the playback application or desktop output you actually use, and that the correct source is unmuted and showing meter activity.
- The presenter cannot be heard: Confirm the selected microphone device, its physical or software mute state, and whether its OBS meter moves when speaking.
- Speech distorts: Reduce microphone gain at the source device first, then adjust the OBS fader. Keep speech out of the red meter region.
- Music overwhelms the presenter: Lower the playback level or its OBS fader, then listen again to a recording. Meter color alone cannot establish how the mix will sound to a listener.
- Audio is only on one side: Check the source’s channel configuration and listen to the rehearsal recording in headphones before broadcasting.
- YouTube warns about copyrighted content: Stop using the matched material unless you have confirmed the necessary rights and resolved the issue with the rights holder. A test stream does not establish permission, and a license may not prevent interruption without Content ID allowlisting.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your radio format uses uploaded recordings rather than a live microphone, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not mix a live presenter’s microphone with playback, and it streams to YouTube only. For a live presenter-and-music mix, use the OBS workflow above.
