You can send a Mixxx radio show to YouTube, but Mixxx does not document YouTube as a direct broadcast destination. Mixxx’s built-in Live Broadcasting sends audio to Shoutcast or Icecast; to reach YouTube, route Mixxx audio into a separate encoder such as OBS Studio, add a video source, and send that encoder’s output to YouTube Live.
Can Mixxx stream directly to YouTube?
No. The Mixxx 2.5 manual documents its Live Broadcasting feature for Shoutcast and Icecast, not YouTube. YouTube’s encoder workflow instead requires the YouTube Live server URL and stream key to be entered in an encoder. The practical setup is therefore Mixxx for playback, an encoder for audio capture and video, and YouTube Live as the destination.
This guide covers the overall workflow rather than OS-specific audio routing: the exact loopback or capture-device steps depend on your operating system and configuration. See the Mixxx 2.5 Live Broadcasting manual if your installed version’s labels differ.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: it must be verified, have no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and the streamer must be at least 16. Check YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility guidance.
- Mixxx playing the program you want to broadcast.
- An encoder that can receive an operating-system-supported audio capture or loopback input and send a live stream to YouTube. OBS Studio is one possible encoder; confirm its current audio-input instructions for your operating system.
- A still image, visualizer, or other suitable video source. YouTube Live expects an audio/video encoder stream, even if the radio program itself is audio-only.
- A reliable internet connection with enough upload capacity for the encoder’s total bitrate plus headroom.
Choose how Mixxx audio reaches the encoder
Option A: Capture Mixxx locally
Route or capture Mixxx’s audio output using an audio device or loopback method supported by your operating system, then select that source as the encoder’s audio input. This avoids setting up a separate public radio server, but the routing method and labels vary by OS and audio configuration. Verify the capture path before going live; this guide cannot prescribe one universal device name or sequence.

Option B: Use a Shoutcast or Icecast server
Mixxx can broadcast to a Shoutcast or Icecast server, while the encoder separately sends the stream to YouTube. This can make sense if you also need an internet-radio stream that remains available independently of YouTube. It involves configuring both services, and the encoder must be able to ingest audio from the server; check that encoder’s current documentation. Mixxx documents Shoutcast 1, Icecast 1, and Icecast 2 support.
For the Mixxx server connection, open Preferences → Live Broadcasting, enter the server details, save them, then use Options → Enable Live Broadcasting to start. For Icecast, provide a mount point. Put the hostname or IP in the host field and the port in its separate field rather than entering a complete URL as the host. Use the credentials supplied by your server provider. Mixxx notes that Ogg Vorbis is not supported by Shoutcast, so confirm that the selected format is accepted by your server.

How to send the Mixxx show to YouTube
- Start and verify playback in Mixxx. Play representative material and confirm that the program is reaching the audio output you intend to capture. If using Option B, enable Live Broadcasting and check the radio-server connection.
- Configure the encoder’s audio input. Select the OS-supported capture or loopback source carrying Mixxx audio, or the compatible server input if you chose the radio-server route. Check the encoder’s audio meter before continuing.
- Add a video source. Add a still image, visualizer, or other appropriate video in the encoder. For a mostly static radio visual, choose a modest resolution and frame rate that remain stable; do not spend upload capacity on unnecessary motion or detail.
- Set encoder output. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Enter both in the encoder’s YouTube/custom RTMP destination fields, selecting RTMPS where available. Keep the key private: YouTube describes it as functioning like the stream’s password and address. Follow the current YouTube encoder settings and bitrate table for the codec, resolution, frame rate, and video bitrate you choose.
- Set audio and rate-control options. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio, CBR, up to 60 fps, and recommends a 2-second keyframe interval (not exceeding 4 seconds). For typical stereo audio, its advanced-audio recommendations list 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Use the live settings page for the current recommendation rather than treating these values as requirements for every show.
- Test before public broadcast. YouTube recommends testing before going live. Where possible, use a private or unlisted test. Check that the encoder receives Mixxx audio, the YouTube preview shows both picture and sound, and stream health remains acceptable. Test representative audio and visual motion, not just a silent still frame. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Start the broadcast. Start streaming from the encoder and inspect the Live Control Room preview. Start or confirm the broadcast in YouTube Studio according to the workflow shown for that stream. Keep an eye on stream health while it is running.
- End cleanly. Stop or end the broadcast through YouTube Studio and stop the encoder as appropriate. Check YouTube’s current guidance for how that stream is archived and any limits that apply.
Keep the connection and audio stable
YouTube advises leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. That is platform guidance, not a guarantee that a particular connection will be stable: other network traffic, Wi-Fi conditions, and the chosen video bitrate can affect the result. Check available outbound bandwidth, avoid saturating the connection, and monitor YouTube’s stream-health indicator. YouTube also transcodes streams for viewers, so choose video settings for a reliable encoder connection rather than assuming viewers receive the exact uploaded encoding.
For current settings and network advice, use YouTube’s streaming tips alongside the encoder settings page. Platform guidance can change; the linked YouTube pages were accessed October 3, 2026, and did not list publication dates.

Troubleshooting
The encoder has no Mixxx audio
- Confirm Mixxx is playing and its output is routed to the device you intend to capture.
- Check that the encoder selected the correct capture input and that the operating system has granted any required audio permissions.
- Check the routing or loopback configuration. The exact fix depends on your OS and audio setup; do not assume that a device named “Stereo Mix” or similar exists on every computer.
The encoder connects but YouTube shows no preview
- Check the current stream URL and key in YouTube Studio against the values entered in the encoder.
- Confirm the selected destination protocol and video/audio settings are supported by YouTube’s current encoder guidance.
- Keep the stream key private. If you suspect it has been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
Mixxx cannot connect to Icecast or Shoutcast
- Check the hostname/IP and port are in their separate fields, and that the Icecast mount is not blank.
- Verify credentials and server details with the provider.
- Confirm the configured audio format is accepted by the server; Mixxx specifically warns that Shoutcast does not support Ogg Vorbis.
The broadcast is unstable or drops frames
- Check upload bandwidth and competing network use, and leave the recommended headroom.
- Reduce video bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the visual source does not need them.
- Run another representative test and watch YouTube stream health before relying on the setup for a long broadcast.
Or let it run in the cloud
