This sends the VOD through your PC as a live encoder feed; it does not upload the file to YouTube or start the broadcast automatically.
What this method does—and what it doesn’t
This guide is for presenting a prerecorded gaming video as an encoder-fed YouTube Live broadcast, with a live event page and the option to monitor chat. OBS plays the file and sends its video and audio to YouTube. YouTube Studio still handles the event details and controls; adding a file to OBS does not itself schedule or start an event.
A local encoder is useful when you want control over scenes, overlays, and live commentary. It also means the Windows PC and its internet connection must remain available while the VOD is playing. If you only want viewers to watch a scheduled ordinary video, check YouTube’s current upload and premiere options separately; this workflow is specifically for a Live event.
Check channel eligibility before scheduling
YouTube’s livestream requirements include a verified channel with no livestreaming restrictions in the previous 90 days, and livestreamers must be at least 16. First-time activation of livestreaming can take up to 24 hours, so enable and confirm access well before the planned broadcast. Create the YouTube Live event and protect its key
- Open YouTube Studio and create or manage a live event. Enter the title and description, choose visibility and audience settings, and set a schedule if you want viewers to find the event page in advance.
- In the event’s encoder or streaming settings, select or create a stream key. The key connects OBS to the broadcast; YouTube describes it as the stream’s “password and address.” Keep it private, and do not show it in screenshots, recordings, or chat. See Manage live stream settings.
- Leave the event available in YouTube Studio so you can select the correct broadcast and inspect its incoming feed after OBS connects.
Prepare OBS to play the VOD
- Install and open OBS Studio on the Windows PC that holds the video file. Menu labels can vary by OBS version; if a label differs, use the current OBS guide for connecting to YouTube and managing scheduled broadcasts: OBS: Streaming to YouTube.
- Create a scene for the broadcast, then add a Media Source and choose the local gaming VOD. Fit or crop the source to the canvas so the game fills the frame as intended. Check that the file’s audio is audible through the source and OBS mixer.
- Choose what should happen at the end of the file. For a one-time VOD, have playback stop and decide what scene or image should remain on screen. If you intend to repeat the video, enable looping in the source’s available controls and test the transition. Do not assume OBS will restart a stopped source or manage the event unattended without testing your chosen settings.
- Connect OBS to YouTube using the service selection and account connection or the stream key, depending on the current OBS workflow. If entering the key manually, verify it carefully and never share it.
Before broadcasting, watch the OBS audio meters while the video plays. Avoid sending the same audio twice—for example, through both the media source and desktop-audio capture—because duplicate routing can create an echo or increased volume.
Choose output quality and test the feed
Use a resolution and bitrate your upload connection can sustain continuously, not merely its brief peak. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the actual stream, monitoring stream health, and reviewing encoder messages. Its encoder guidance recommends RTMPS and constant bitrate (CBR); it documents H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1 video encoding, frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For bitrate, use the resolution-specific values in YouTube’s live encoder settings rather than applying one number to every resolution.

- In OBS output and video settings, choose a supported encoder, CBR rate control, a suitable resolution and frame rate, and the keyframe interval recommended by YouTube. Match the bitrate to YouTube’s current table for your selected resolution and frame rate.
- Run an upload-speed test and leave headroom so other network use or normal fluctuations do not overwhelm the connection. If the upload rate is inconsistent, lower the bitrate or output resolution and test again.
- Start sending the feed from OBS, but do not yet assume the public event is live. In YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, confirm the correct event receives video and sound, inspect the preview, and check stream health.
- Play a representative section of the VOD. Confirm motion is smooth enough, game audio is present and not duplicated, and any overlay or commentary appears as intended. Adjust OBS, then check the preview again.
HDR and advanced codec settings are not required for an ordinary SDR VOD. Use them only if your footage, encoder, and workflow support them and you have tested the full path.
Start, monitor, and end the broadcast deliberately
- Once the preview and health indicators look right, start the event using the controls in YouTube Studio. Follow the on-screen confirmation for the selected broadcast; connecting OBS and starting the public event are separate actions.
- Keep OBS running and the PC connected while the VOD plays. Monitor the Live Control Room and chat if you are available, and respond to encoder or stream-health warnings rather than leaving a failed feed unattended.
- At the end, stop the broadcast deliberately in the appropriate controls, then check the event in Studio to confirm its status and whether an archive is available and retained as you want. Archive availability and handling depend on the event’s settings and YouTube’s current behavior.
Check game, music, and other content rights
A prerecorded file receives no exemption from YouTube rules simply because it is a VOD. Live content must comply with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service, and YouTube scans live streams for third-party material. If it detects content such as another copyrighted broadcast, it may replace the live image with a placeholder and warn you; if the material remains, the stream can be interrupted or terminated. An archive may also receive a Content ID claim after the broadcast. See YouTube’s guidance on copyrighted content in live streams and its copyright policies for live streams.

- Review the game publisher’s streaming permissions for the footage and any restrictions on monetization or distribution.
- Check rights for soundtrack music, overlays, clips, and other media in the VOD—not only the gameplay itself.
- If you have permission to use third-party material, confirm whether the rights holder must add your channel to an allowlist to avoid live interruptions. A license does not by itself guarantee that automated checks will not interrupt the stream.
