To reduce the chance that an OBS update interrupts a 24/7 children’s stream, schedule OBS and Windows maintenance for an announced low-viewership window, preserve the OBS profile and scene assets, and verify the stream after every restart. Turning off OBS’s startup update check affects OBS only; it does not stop Windows updates. If your channel runs uploaded videos rather than a live camera feed, a cloud service such as StreamNeo can remove the streaming computer and OBS from that playback path.
What you can—and cannot—prevent
OBS has a built-in setting, “Automatically check for updates on startup,” and its launch-parameter guide documents --disable-updater for Windows and macOS. These control OBS’s own updater, not updates to Windows. Windows updates may still require a restart, and Microsoft says updates cannot be stopped entirely; active hours and restart scheduling can help move automatic restarts to a more suitable time. See the OBS launch-parameter documentation and Microsoft’s Windows Update FAQ.
No setting described here guarantees uninterrupted viewing. Restarting OBS may restore the stream, but it does not guarantee a no-gap handoff, successful ingest, or recovery from every failure. The available official guidance does not establish a general recovery time or uptime rate.
Plan a maintenance window
Coordinate the interruption
Choose a low-viewership period and coordinate it with whoever owns the children’s programming schedule and viewer-facing communication. Tell viewers or caregivers when appropriate that the stream may briefly stop while maintenance is performed. Do not begin an update shortly before a scheduled program or leave a restart prompt waiting indefinitely without an operator plan.

- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Keep OBS and Windows maintenance separate
- OBS: Review the “Automatically check for updates on startup” option in OBS settings. If you use a launch parameter instead, OBS documents
--disable-updaterfor Windows and macOS. This prevents or controls OBS’s built-in update check; it is not a Windows update control. - Windows: Set active hours and use Windows restart scheduling to place required restarts in the planned maintenance period. These settings help manage timing; they do not permanently block updates.
Before changing policy or launch behavior on a managed or shared computer, check with its administrator. Keep a record of what you changed so the next operator understands how updates are being handled.
Prepare the OBS setup before restarting
Preserve the configuration and its media
Before maintenance, make sure you can restore the scene collection and profile that contain the stream’s scenes, sources, and output configuration. Check the paths of local videos, images, audio, and other assets referenced by those scenes. A configuration backup is not useful if its media has been moved or is unavailable after restart.

OBS portable mode stores its configuration alongside the application, but it does not automatically make scene media files portable. OBS documents portable mode for Windows; it is not supported on macOS or Linux in its portable-mode guide. If you use it, keep referenced assets at stable paths and back them up separately.
Decide how OBS will be relaunched
OBS documents the --startstreaming launch parameter, which can start streaming when OBS launches. Treat this only as a recovery aid in a controlled procedure: the correct profile, scene, stream destination, and credentials must already be available. The parameter does not prove that the service accepted the ingest or that viewers experienced continuous playback. Do not use unattended auto-start without first confirming the exact scene and destination it will use.

Update and verify the stream
- Confirm the window and recovery plan. Ensure the responsible operator knows the expected interruption, the OBS profile and scene to use, and how to restore the previous configuration if needed.
- Save and back up. Preserve the relevant OBS profile and scene collection, and verify that referenced local media remains accessible at its configured paths.
- Perform the planned maintenance. Apply the OBS update, if one is needed, and handle any Windows update and required restart as separate tasks.
- Relaunch deliberately. Open OBS with the intended profile and scene. If your controlled setup uses
--startstreaming, do not assume the parameter alone has completed recovery. - Check the actual broadcast. Confirm OBS is running, the intended scene is selected, the streaming service reports an active ingest, and both audio and video are present. Check the viewer-facing playback when possible before leaving the channel unattended.
- Record the outcome. Note the update, any changed settings, and whether recovery succeeded. That gives the next operator a useful maintenance record without implying that later updates will behave identically.
If OBS does not return to the stream
- OBS opens, but the wrong scene or profile appears: Select the intended profile and scene, then verify their sources and output destination before starting the broadcast.
- Media sources are missing: Check whether referenced files were moved, a drive is unavailable, or a path changed. Portable mode does not package scene media automatically.
- OBS is running but the service shows no active ingest: Verify the configured streaming destination and credential setup, then start the stream deliberately and check the service again. A launch parameter is not confirmation of successful ingest.
- OBS behaves differently after an update: Review OBS logs and recent system changes. OBS’s Help Portal identifies antivirus interference as one possible troubleshooting issue and suggests checking whether OBS is whitelisted. Treat this as a possibility, not a diagnosis; do not disable security software indiscriminately.
- The computer restarts outside the planned window: Review Windows active hours and restart scheduling separately from OBS’s update setting. OBS’s updater control does not govern Windows restart behavior.
A UPS can help with some power-loss situations, but it does not prevent a software update or planned restart. A replacement PC likewise does not remove the need to manage update timing and recovery on the machine that is broadcasting.

If your 24/7 children’s channel plays uploaded, prerecorded videos rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option for keeping a YouTube stream running without leaving OBS or a home computer on. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud loops the uploaded videos; it does not broadcast a camera feed.
