To play different playlists at set times on a YouTube radio stream, schedule the playback in the encoder or a separate playout system—not in YouTube Studio. Studio can schedule the live event; your streaming setup must select and send the morning, afternoon, or evening media. For a stream that must switch playlists unattended, you also need clock-based automation: OBS’s documented playlist controls support looping and shuffle, but do not document time-of-day switching.
Choose how the stream should change between time blocks
First decide whether the stream can end and restart at each changeover, or must remain one continuous live event. Also decide whether each block needs its own event page and promotion, whether playlist changes must happen unattended at exact local times, and whether you need complete replay archives. Those choices determine whether scheduled events are sufficient or a separate playback scheduler is needed.
| Approach | What it does | Best fit | What to plan for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Separate scheduled events | Schedule a YouTube event for each block and play the corresponding media from your encoder. | Blocks can have distinct event pages, or the stream may stop and restart between them. | The encoder still needs to start or switch to the correct playlist at each boundary. |
| One continuous event with external playout automation | Keep one event live while an encoder or playout system changes the media according to a clock-based schedule. | The stream must stay continuous and change playlists without an operator present. | Choose and verify a scheduler that supports timed playlist changes; the cited OBS controls alone do not establish this capability or guarantee timing accuracy. |
Option 1: Schedule separate YouTube live events
- In YouTube Studio, schedule a live event for each time block, such as morning, afternoon, and evening. YouTube says, “Scheduling a stream lets you promote your stream.” A scheduled event establishes the event and its expected start; it does not choose which files your encoder plays. See YouTube’s encoder setup and scheduling instructions.
- Prepare the local playlist for each block in your encoder or playback setup. Confirm that the correct files are ready before the event starts.
- In the encoder, use the server URL and stream key for the scheduled event as directed by YouTube’s setup flow, then start the encoder feed at the appropriate time.
- At the next block, switch the encoder to the next playlist and start or use the corresponding scheduled event. Test the handoff in advance so you know whether your chosen setup requires a stop, restart, or other operator action.
YouTube’s Live Streaming API describes scheduled broadcasts with a title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. The event scheduling model helps manage the broadcast visible to viewers; it is separate from the content being sent by the encoder. See Google’s broadcast lifecycle guide and its broadcasts-and-streams model.
Option 2: Keep one event live and schedule playback outside YouTube
For one continuous 24/7 event, a playback system must make the time-based decisions. OBS can play local media files, and its VLC Video source can play multiple playlist items in order or shuffle, with looping. VLC must be installed for that source to appear. The documented OBS controls do not specify rules for automatically replacing one named playlist with another at a particular time, so do not assume that a VLC playlist by itself provides a morning/evening schedule. See OBS Media Sources.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Install VLC if you intend to use OBS’s VLC Video source, then add and test the local media you want the stream to play.
- Set the playlist order, shuffle, and looping behavior to match the block’s intended playback.
- For automatic changes between named playlists, add a clock-based automation or broadcast playout system that explicitly supports scheduled playlist changes. Configure the local time zone and changeover times, then test the transitions while monitoring the outgoing program.
- Send the resulting audio/video feed from the encoder to the YouTube live event. YouTube receives the feed; the encoder or playout layer decides which media is in it.
If you are building custom software, the YouTube Live Streaming API can create and manage broadcasts and associated streams. Google’s model distinguishes the liveBroadcast (the event viewers see) from the liveStream (the transmitted audio-video content). The playback scheduler remains a separate part of your encoder or playout application; the API model does not document scheduling local playlist files.
Keep YouTube playlists separate from encoder playlists
A YouTube playlist groups videos already on YouTube. An OBS/VLC playlist supplies media to the outgoing live feed. Putting videos into a YouTube playlist does not make an encoder switch its source files by time of day. For time-based radio programming, configure the media playlist and its schedule in the playback layer, then transmit that feed to the live event. See YouTube’s playlist help and OBS Media Sources.

Check rights, storage, and replay expectations
- Music rights: Confirm you have the necessary permissions for each recording and composition in the locations where the stream will be available. A playlist or successful connection to YouTube is not proof of those rights.
- Local storage: The cited OBS documentation lists supported local media sources and the VLC dependency; it does not prescribe a hardware minimum or require an external drive. An external drive is an optional way to store a large media library, not a scheduler.
- Archives: YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not establish that a 24/7 stream will have a complete archive. If full replays matter, plan for the archive limitation rather than assuming the whole continuous stream will be preserved. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance.
Troubleshoot playlist changes and event handoffs
- The right event is live, but the wrong playlist is playing: The event schedule and playback schedule are separate. Check the encoder’s selected source and the playout system’s active block.
- A VLC source is missing in OBS: OBS’s documented VLC source requires VLC to be installed. Install it, then reopen OBS and check the source list.
- The playlist loops or shuffles but never changes at the scheduled time: Loop and shuffle control playlist playback; they are not evidence of a clock-based switch. Check that a separate scheduler is configured to activate the next playlist.
- A scheduled event starts without a feed: Scheduling the event does not start the encoder content. Check that the encoder is sending the feed and is configured with the appropriate server URL and stream key.
- A changeover interrupts the stream: Separate-event workflows require an explicit encoder transition at each boundary. Test the selected start/stop or switching procedure before relying on it unattended.
- A 24/7 replay is incomplete: The under-12-hour automatic archive guidance does not promise a complete archive for a continuous 24-hour stream. Treat live availability and replay retention as separate requirements.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a YouTube stream built from uploaded recordings rather than a live camera feed, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. StreamNeo plays the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and offers the first day free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or start the free first day.
