1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesYou can run a 24/7 children’s channel in 720p from a modest PC, but resolution alone does not determine whether it will stay live. Use a simple 720p scene, begin at 30 fps, configure OBS and YouTube for a stable H.264 stream, then test the actual computer, content and internet connection for hours before relying on it. For continuous operation, plan for recovery, rights clearance and the fact that a single YouTube stream longer than 12 hours may not be archived.
What to check before setting up OBS
OBS’s listed system requirements are a baseline for compatibility, not a promise of streaming performance. OBS says that having a compatible system does not guarantee it can stream or record. The actual workload varies with the encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; the available hardware encoders also depend on the PC.
Inventory the PC and connection
- Identify the CPU, integrated or discrete GPU, memory, cooling condition and available storage.
- Check which encoders OBS actually offers on this computer. Do not assume a low-power processor has a compatible hardware encoder.
- Check whether the PC can use a wired network connection and whether the upstream connection remains steady under sustained use.
- Decide whether you need local recordings. They use storage and can add encoding or disk workload.
OBS’s help portal points users to its Auto-Configuration Wizard and x264 streaming guidance. Use the wizard to establish a starting point, then validate the result with your own content and hardware. A hardware encoder is one option to compare, not a universal requirement for live streaming.
Choose a conservative 720p configuration
Start at 1280×720 and 30 fps
In OBS, set the video canvas to 1280×720 and the output resolution to 1280×720. Start at 30 frames per second, especially for cartoons, slides or other material without rapid motion. Consider 60 fps only if the content benefits from smoother motion and your PC sustains it without encoding or thermal problems. These are workload-conscious starting points, not guarantees for any particular computer.

Keep the scene simple: use only needed sources, and avoid unnecessary browser sources, animated overlays, filters and extra scaling. A complex scene can burden a modest PC even when the output is only 720p.
Use YouTube’s H.264 streaming recommendations
For a broad-compatibility starting point, configure H.264 video over RTMPS with CBR (constant bitrate). YouTube’s current encoder guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends 8 Mbps for H.264 at both 720p30 and 720p60, and a two-second keyframe interval. These are YouTube recommendations, not proof that your upstream connection or PC can sustain the stream.
- Video codec: H.264.
- Ingest protocol: RTMPS.
- Rate control: CBR.
- Video bitrate: 8 Mbps at 720p30 or 720p60, per YouTube’s recommendation.
- Keyframe interval: two seconds, per YouTube’s recommendation.
Leave network headroom beyond the configured video bitrate for audio and normal connection variation. The sources do not specify a universal margin, so confirm stability on the connection you will actually use. Prefer a wired connection where practical, and choose a stream quality your upload connection can sustain rather than relying on a single speed-test result.

Set up the YouTube channel and stream key
- Check eligibility: YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Confirm eligibility in YouTube Studio before your planned launch.
- Open the Live Control Room: Create or schedule the broadcast, and set its title, description, privacy and audience accurately.
- Connect OBS: Use the stream key and server information provided by YouTube for the broadcast. Treat the stream key like a password; do not share it or show it in a public recording.
- Run a private or unlisted test: Send representative video and audio, then check picture, sound, motion, bitrate, dropped frames and YouTube’s stream-health messages.
- Go public only when ready: Verify the selected audience designation, rights to all included material and the test results before starting a public continuous broadcast.
YouTube supports encoder-based streaming and recommends testing before going live. Keep monitoring stream health after launch; a successful initial connection does not prove that the system will remain stable for days.

Test the complete setup under sustained load
Run the actual looping content, overlays, audio and encoder configuration for multiple hours before announcing the channel as continuously available. OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics can help distinguish scene-rendering or encoding trouble from a network problem. Watch YouTube’s stream-health messages as well.
- If frames are missed during rendering or encoding, simplify the scene or test a different available encoder or frame rate.
- If the upload fluctuates or YouTube reports connection trouble, check the network path and reduce the stream demands to a quality the connection can reliably sustain.
- Check the PC’s temperature and cooling during a long run; a short successful test may not reveal heat-related instability.
- Test what happens after a source freezes, the network disconnects, OBS stops or the PC reboots. Write down a restart procedure you can follow.
Automatic rebooting can help only if OBS and the broadcast recover safely afterward. Validate that recovery before depending on it; a reboot by itself does not solve a bad source, unstable connection or failed encoder.

Plan for interruptions and YouTube archives
A 24/7 channel needs an operating plan, not just an encoder configuration. Decide who can check the stream, how to restart it after a failure, and whether viewers need a replay. An optional UPS may cover a brief power interruption, but it cannot prevent internet outages, PC failures or YouTube downtime. Choose a unit only after measuring the actual load and deciding how much ride-through or shutdown time you need; no universal capacity or runtime is established here.
Do not rely on one all-day broadcast for its replay
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. If a dependable replay matters, consider planned shorter broadcasts and local recording, while accounting for the storage required and any extra encoding or disk load. Test recording alongside streaming on the target PC before making it part of the workflow.

Make the audience designation an accurate decision
YouTube requires creators to say whether a video or live stream is made for kids. Do not use the audience setting as a growth tactic or rely on automated detection to decide it for you. Made-for-kids content has features restricted or unavailable, including live chat, comments on archives, notifications and personalized advertising. Choose the designation based on the content and applicable requirements.

Clear both video and audio for streaming
Every looped clip, song and other included material needs the rights required to broadcast it. A video being publicly viewable, buying a copy, or giving credit does not by itself grant live-streaming permission. Copyright matches or policy violations can lead to takedowns or live-stream restrictions, including matches to another copyrighted live broadcast. Keep records of permissions or licences for material you did not create.

| Local recording or no local recording | A local recording can provide a fallback archive. | Storage consumption and any extra encoding or disk load; test concurrent recording and streaming. |
Common problems and what to try
OBS runs, but the picture stutters or frames are missed
Lower scene complexity first: remove nonessential browser sources, filters, animation and scaling. Confirm the output is 1280×720 and start at 30 fps. Check OBS’s rendering and encoding statistics during the problem, then test the available encoders one at a time under the same sustained workload.
YouTube reports unstable stream health
Check upstream stability rather than just the headline speed-test result. Use a wired connection if practical, stop competing upload activity and reduce the output demands if the connection cannot sustain them. Keep the two-second keyframe interval and other YouTube recommendations in place while troubleshooting.

The stream drops after hours or after a restart
Reproduce the condition during a long test, inspect whether the source, encoder, network or PC stopped, and follow the recovery procedure you prepared. Verify that OBS reconnects and that the broadcast is visible in YouTube’s control room before relying on automated recovery.
The stream is live but there is no complete archive
Do not assume an uninterrupted broadcast over 12 hours will be captured. Use shorter planned broadcasts if archive capture is important, and maintain a tested local recording when a replay is required.
