You can turn videos stored on a NAS into a scheduled, always-available channel by pairing the library with virtual-channel software such as Tunarr or ErsatzTV Legacy. The NAS supplies the media; the channel software builds the schedule and serves it to a compatible TV app or media server. You do not need a broadcast antenna for this NAS-file setup.

How the setup fits together

Think of this as three separate pieces: the NAS and its files, a virtual-channel generator that creates a schedule, and a playback client on the TV or other device. Depending on the software, the media server and channel generator may run on the same machine or elsewhere on your home network. A successful setup depends on the whole chain working with your actual files, network, and client.

Tunarr can create channels from Plex or Jellyfin libraries and expose them through a virtual HDHomeRun tuner or generated M3U files. ErsatzTV Legacy offers a similar custom-channel workflow with local libraries and Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby integrations. Jellyfin and Plex can serve as media-server or playback components, but a virtual-channel generator is what turns a stored collection into scheduled channel output. See the Tunarr documentation, ErsatzTV documentation, and Jellyfin Live TV documentation.

Choose the software path

Option Media sources Delivery and workflow What to consider
Tunarr Plex or Jellyfin libraries, according to its documentation. Configure channels and schedules, then use a virtual HDHomeRun tuner with Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby, or a generated M3U in a compatible IPTV player. Supports Docker or standalone binaries. Confirm that the library integration and chosen client work together on your network. Tunarr documentation.
ErsatzTV Legacy Local libraries and Plex, Jellyfin, or Emby integrations. Its documentation says media-server imports support movies and shows; local libraries support additional media kinds. Its quick-start sequence is install, add media, create collections, create channels, create schedules, and configure clients. The project labels the product and documentation “ErsatzTV Legacy.” Check its current project status and installation notes before adopting it. Media documentation.
Jellyfin or Plex as server/client Your existing server library, subject to the channel generator and client integration. Jellyfin Live TV documents M3U and HDHomeRun tuners. Plex can accept a virtual tuner; its antenna and broadcast DVR features are optional for a NAS-file channel. Plex distinguishes virtual channels from over-the-air TV and DVR. An antenna and compatible tuner are for broadcast reception; DVR recording requires an active Plex Pass. Jellyfin Live TV and Plex Live TV & DVR.

Build the channel safely, step by step

  1. Make the NAS library reachable

Check that the machine running the channel software can read the folder or media-server library containing the videos. ErsatzTV documents local libraries as well as Plex, Jellyfin, and Emby sources. For an imported media-server library, its documentation covers movies and shows; local libraries support additional media kinds. Start with a small test collection before importing the full library.

    • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
    • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
    • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  2. Curate a child-safe collection

Create a dedicated folder, collection, or library containing only programs an adult has reviewed. Do not assume that restrictions on a media server’s ordinary movie or TV library automatically apply to its live-channel feature.

  3. Create channels and schedules

Use the channel generator’s configuration and schedule tools to decide what plays and in what order. With ErsatzTV, the documented sequence is to add media, create collections, create channels, create schedules, and configure clients after installation. Tunarr documents channel configuration and scheduling. Organize channels around the way your household uses them—for example, a reviewed mix for daytime viewing and a separate channel for bedtime stories.

Pick a stream mode that fits the host and client

ErsatzTV documents HLS Segmenter and MPEG-TS as its primary modes, with HLS Direct as another option. These modes make different trade-offs; there is no universal choice for every NAS, file, and TV app.

  • HLS Segmenter: Transcodes, supports watermarks, and is described in ErsatzTV’s channel documentation as performing best at program boundaries.
  • MPEG-TS: A light wrapper around that mode for clients that require an HDHomeRun tuner.
  • HLS Direct: Does not transcode and can suit lower-power systems, but it does not support watermarks, and some clients may have problems at program boundaries.

Test the selected mode on the host and target client, especially when a channel moves from one program to the next. ErsatzTV’s documentation does not establish a universal CPU or NAS requirement. Separately, Plex warns that some apps may not play recorded content when the Plex server runs on a low-power NAS without transcoding support. That is a reason to test your specific files and client combination, not evidence that every virtual-channel setup requires transcoding. See ErsatzTV channel documentation and Plex’s DVR and Live TV FAQ.

Make child access a deliberate part of the design

Plex’s parental-controls documentation says restriction profiles for managed users apply to movie and TV libraries and video-on-demand, but do not apply to Live TV content or channels. Do not rely on a Plex restriction profile alone to make a virtual kids’ channel safe. Curate the source collection, test the child account in the playback app, and limit access to the intended channel where the software allows it. Plex last modified its Parental Controls article on June 23, 2023.

Software documentation describes how the tools work; it does not establish that you have rights to stream every program or share it with other people. Use content you are authorized to access and stream. Check the relevant licenses and local law before sharing beyond your household or distributing a channel; the answer depends on the titles, territory, and audience.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

  • The channel generator cannot see the media: Verify that its host can access the NAS folder or media-server library, and confirm that the integration and media type are supported by the chosen software.
  • The channel does not appear in the TV app: Confirm that you selected a compatible delivery route—virtual tuner or M3U—and that the client supports it. Test with the corresponding media server or IPTV app, rather than assuming every client accepts both.
  • Playback fails or pauses on a particular file: Test that file with the actual client and stream mode. A low-power NAS or client limitation may make transcoding relevant, but do not assume all files or setups need it.
  • A program transition causes a playback issue: Test program boundaries and compare the available stream modes. ErsatzTV notes that HLS Segmenter performs best at boundaries, while some clients may have issues with HLS Direct there.
  • An unsuitable title appears for a child: Remove it from the curated source collection or channel schedule, then retest with the child’s actual account. Do not rely solely on library restrictions for Live TV channels.

Keep the setup modest and verify compatibility before buying hardware

A NAS that already serves the library may be enough, but the actual result depends on the host, files, stream mode, network, and playback client. Test before buying a new NAS, drives, backup storage, or transcoding-capable hardware. Jellyfin lists Amazon among its client platforms, so a Fire TV device is one possible playback route, not a requirement; the available documentation does not verify a particular retail model, app version, codec, or Tunarr/ErsatzTV combination. Check compatibility for the exact device and apps you intend to use. The informal phrase “a sort of 24/7 live cable TV thing” captures the idea of turning a library into genre- or collection-based channels, but it is not official product terminology; see the community discussion.

Or let it run in the cloud

StreamNeo is a separate option if your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos, rather than a channel played around the home from a NAS. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from the cloud. It does not stream from a camera or serve as a NAS-library TV tuner.

  • Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on.
  • Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot.
  • StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
  • The first day is free with no card; the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
