Keep the radio audio running in your encoder and add your microphone as a separate audio source. In OBS Studio, mute and unmute the mic in the Audio Mixer—or use a push-to-talk hotkey—while leaving the music source active. YouTube’s break overlay is a visual slate; it does not mix or mute your audio sources.
Set up the microphone without interrupting the radio audio
- Keep the existing radio audio source active. Do not replace or mute the source that provides the continuous music or program audio.
- Add the microphone as a separate input in OBS. In your scene, use an Audio Input Capture source and select the microphone you want to use. A USB microphone can connect directly if compatible with your computer. An XLR microphone may need a compatible audio interface or mixer, depending on your equipment.
- Check the microphone meter. Speak at the volume you expect to use on air and confirm the mic’s meter moves in the Audio Mixer. Adjust its level, then listen through monitoring or make a short recording to check how the voice sits against the music.
- Prevent duplicate capture. If the microphone is already selected under OBS Settings → Audio, adding that same device again as a scene source can create echo. Use one capture route: disable the duplicate global device or remove the duplicate scene source.
- Control the mic independently. Use the microphone’s mixer mute button for each break, or configure a push-to-talk or push-to-mute hotkey. Keep the radio source active while you unmute to speak; mute the microphone again when the announcement ends.
- Test the complete mix. Play representative radio audio, make a voice break, and check the stream preview and a recording or monitored output. YouTube recommends testing similar audio and monitoring the stream while it is live.
OBS labels and routing can vary by version and operating system. The key is that the mic has its own input and mute control, separate from the continuous radio audio.
Keep music continuous if you use a separate break scene
A separate scene can contain a scene-specific microphone input, but switching scenes may also remove the music source. If you choose that setup, make sure the music is present in the break scene too or routed independently. For most voice breaks, one radio scene with the microphone independently muted and unmuted is simpler.
Connect the encoder to YouTube
YouTube’s encoder workflow supports external audio and video equipment, including microphones. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into your encoder’s stream settings. Keep the key private. Start the encoder’s output to YouTube and confirm the preview before relying on the stream for a scheduled break.

The YouTube Live break overlay is intended as a visual slate while you step away; it does not change the encoder’s audio sources. If you are leaving the microphone, mute it. If your slate has sound, that audio must be included through the encoder. The overlay is not a way to speak over uninterrupted radio audio: for that, mix the microphone into the encoder as described above.
Troubleshoot common voice-break problems
- The mic meter does not move: Check that OBS selected the right input device, that the microphone is connected and available to the operating system, and that its input is not muted. Speak into it again while watching the mixer.
- There is echo or doubled voice: Check whether the same microphone is captured both globally in Settings → Audio and as an Audio Input Capture scene source. Disable one route.
- The voice is too quiet or overwhelms the music: Adjust the microphone level in the mixer and listen to the result against the actual radio audio. Do not judge the balance from the meter alone.
- The radio stops when you switch to the break scene: The music source may not be present in that scene. Add it there or use a single scene and control the mic separately.
- The mic stays live after the announcement: Mute it in the mixer or use the configured push-to-mute control, then confirm the mic meter is no longer picking up the room.
- The encoder is not reaching YouTube: Recheck the stream URL and stream key in the encoder against the values shown in Live Control Room, then check the live preview. Avoid sharing the stream key.
