On Twitch, a channel rerun is a new broadcast of prerecorded video; Twitch’s documented rerun workflow does not guarantee that the original stream’s timestamped chat replay will appear alongside it. Keep the original VOD if you want viewers to revisit that chat, and link them to the archive. On YouTube, check that Live Chat Replay remains enabled on the original archived stream; editing that stream in YouTube’s video editor removes chat replay.
What “chat replay on a rerun” can mean
There are three distinct viewing experiences that are easy to confuse:
- Original archive: the saved video of the stream, with its associated timestamped chat replay when the platform supports and retains it.
- New rerun broadcast: prerecorded footage streamed to the channel again. Viewers may participate in a new live chat, but that is not the original stream’s timestamped chat.
- Rewinding a live stream: a viewer seeks backward while the broadcast is still live. This is separate from a later rerun, and chat may continue live while the viewer is behind.
For a Twitch rerun, Twitch’s official instructions describe saving VODs and labeling a new broadcast as a rerun. They do not document a control that imports the original VOD’s chat replay into that new broadcast. Treat that transfer as unsupported by the documented workflow, rather than promising viewers it will happen.
Twitch: preserve and direct viewers to the original chat
1. Enable VOD storage before the original stream
- Open Twitch Creator Dashboard and go to Settings > Stream (the Stream Settings page).
- Turn on Store Past Broadcasts before you go live. Twitch says VOD storage is not enabled by default; if the broadcast is not saved, you cannot rely on its original archive or chat replay remaining available.
2. Retain the original VOD before it expires
Find the broadcast in Video Producer. Twitch’s published retention periods are 60 days for Partners and Prime or Turbo users, 14 days for Affiliates, and 7 days for other broadcasters. These are retention limits, not guarantees that an archive will be available indefinitely. Download or export a VOD you want to keep before its applicable limit; a local copy preserves the video, but should not be presented as restoring Twitch’s timestamped chat replay.

3. Mark the rebroadcast clearly
- Capture the VOD and stream it from an encoder of your choice, following Twitch’s on-demand content workflow.
- When setting up the broadcast, select the Rerun checkbox.
- Start the title with [Rerun] and identify it as prerecorded in the go-live notification.
Twitch describes reruns as non-live content played on your channel. The label helps viewers understand what they are watching; it is not a documented setting for restoring the original chat to the new broadcast.
4. Link the archive where its chat belongs
Put the original VOD link in the rerun title details, channel panels, or a pinned message, and say that viewers should open the archive to see the original stream and its chat replay. Do not promise that the old timestamped chat will play in sync during the rerun unless your own separately verified production method actually provides that experience.

YouTube: check the original archive’s Live Chat Replay
- In YouTube Studio, open the archived livestream and inspect its Customization settings.
- Confirm that Live Chat Replay is enabled for that archive. YouTube says replay is on by default for stream archives, but it can be unchecked for an individual video.
- If chat matters, avoid editing the livestream in YouTube’s video editor. YouTube states that live streams edited in the video editor will not have chat replay.
- Send viewers to the video’s YouTube watch page. YouTube says live chat is available on watch pages, not in embedded players.
This preserves access to chat on the original archive; it does not mean that a separate new broadcast automatically inherits the archive’s chat.
Do not confuse Twitch Stream Rewind with a rerun
Stream Rewind lets eligible viewers pause and seek backward during a live Twitch stream. The stream remains live, so chat continues in real time while a viewer watches behind. It does not replay the chat from a previous broadcast during a later rerun.

Twitch says Stream Rewind can be enabled only by Affiliates and Partners. Their Store Past Broadcasts and Always Publish VODs settings must be on, and viewer access is limited to qualifying channel subscribers or Turbo users. Check Twitch’s current eligibility guidance before relying on the feature, because platform settings and access rules can change.
Where chat replay is unavailable in embeds
- YouTube: chat is available on the watch page, not in an embedded player. Link viewers to the watch page when they need chat.
- Twitch: Twitch’s developer embed documentation says chat replay is unsupported in its embedded player. Direct viewers to the original Twitch archive instead.

Quick troubleshooting
The original Twitch VOD is missing
Check whether Store Past Broadcasts was enabled before the stream and whether the VOD has passed Twitch’s retention period. Enable storage for future broadcasts; if the original was not retained, a later rerun cannot recreate its archive chat.
The Twitch rerun has chat, but it is not the old chat
A new broadcast can have its own live chat. Link the original VOD for viewers who want the previous stream’s timestamped chat; the documented rerun workflow does not guarantee that old chat will be transferred.

YouTube chat replay is absent from the archive
Inspect the archive’s Customization setting for Live Chat Replay. Also check whether the livestream was edited in YouTube’s video editor, which removes replay.
Chat is missing from an embedded video
Open the archive on its platform watch page. Embedded playback does not provide the chat replay experience documented for the watch page.
A viewer rewinds Twitch but chat seems out of sync
That is expected with Stream Rewind: the viewer can be behind the live video while chat continues live. It is not a synchronized replay of the original chat.
