You can run prerecorded gameplay as a YouTube Live stream without keeping a gaming PC online: prepare footage you have permission to rebroadcast, create or schedule a YouTube broadcast, then connect its stream URL and key to a cloud encoder. Set a stable resolution, frame rate and bitrate, preview the feed, and monitor it after launch. The cloud service handles sending the video; you do not need a capture card to replay footage already prepared for upload.
What a YouTube gaming rerun stream involves
A rerun stream is prerecorded gameplay sent to YouTube as a live audio-video feed. YouTube distinguishes the broadcast—the event and watch page viewers see—from the stream—the feed and settings sent by the encoder. A stream may be reused across broadcasts at different times; Google’s Live Streaming API guide also describes recurring broadcasts and a continuous 24/7 feed. Check your encoder’s current scheduling workflow rather than assuming every service handles recurring events the same way. Google’s Live Streaming API guide was last updated September 14, 2026.
For this workflow, a cloud encoder takes the prepared video and sends it to YouTube remotely. You can configure the rerun without leaving a dedicated gaming PC powered on. A local software encoder remains useful if you need to produce a live mix or capture gameplay in real time, but it is not required just to rebroadcast a finished recording.
Before you start: footage, channel and stream plan
Use footage you can legally rebroadcast
Use recordings you own or are authorized to stream. Do not assume gameplay, a game’s soundtrack, licensed music, overlays or other third-party material are automatically cleared for a public rerun. Rights depend on the game, publisher, music and other material in the recording. YouTube’s technical streaming guidance does not decide those title-specific permissions. Review applicable rights and YouTube’s current rules before scheduling, especially if you plan to monetize.

Activate live streaming early
If you have never streamed from the channel, YouTube says first-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours. Start activation well before the intended launch. Decide whether the event should be public, private or unlisted; scheduling can make an event appear as upcoming to subscribers, depending on its settings.
Choose a cloud service for the actual workflow
Check the provider’s current support for prerecorded files and playlists, looping and scheduling, YouTube connection, stream-health monitoring and recovery, maximum resolution and frame rate, storage, geographic availability, plan limits and total cost. YouTube’s encoder guide lists Gyre and Upstream as cloud tools relevant to 24/7 prerecorded streaming. That listing is not a verification of current prices, regional availability or reliability.

Set up the YouTube broadcast and connect the encoder
- Prepare the video or playlist. Confirm that the recordings play correctly, include the intended audio, and are authorized for rebroadcast. For a long-running stream, check the playback order and whether the cloud service supports the loop or schedule you need.
- Create or schedule the live event. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Set the audience-facing privacy level—public, private or unlisted—and choose the Gaming stream type when appropriate. Review the event’s current launch, auto-start and auto-stop settings; these can affect whether you must click Go live yourself.
- Copy the connection details. In the event’s stream settings, copy the YouTube stream URL and stream key into the corresponding fields in your cloud encoder. Treat the key like a password: anyone with it may be able to send a feed to your channel. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder. You can use a custom stream key if you want to reuse one, provided your workflow supports it.
- Set the encoder output. Choose a resolution, frame rate, video codec, bitrate, keyframe interval and audio format supported by both YouTube and the cloud service. Use the recommendations below as YouTube ingestion guidance, not as a guarantee that a particular plan or connection can sustain the feed.
- Start the cloud feed and preview it. Start sending from the encoder and check the YouTube Live Control Room preview. In the scheduled-stream flow, YouTube’s guide describes waiting for the preview and then choosing Go live. Follow the current controls shown for your event; auto-start settings can change the sequence.
- Monitor after launch. Watch Live Control Room stream health and check that the picture, motion and audio remain correct. Confirm the cloud service continues playback and is connected to the intended broadcast.
Recommended YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection into and through Google’s servers. Its listed supported video codecs are H.264, H.265 and AV1, with up to 60 fps; use constant bitrate (CBR), a recommended two-second keyframe interval that does not exceed four seconds, and AAC or MP3 audio. Match the chosen output to the cloud service’s capabilities and to the quality of your recording. YouTube detects the encoder’s selected resolution and frame rate and transcodes for viewers’ devices.
The bitrate figures below are YouTube’s published ingestion recommendations at access on October 3, 2026. They are not independent performance tests or a promise that any service plan can deliver them reliably.

These and other current values appear in YouTube Help’s encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions guide; check it again before configuring a stream because recommendations can change. Higher resolution or frame rate is useful only if the source footage, service plan and delivery remain stable. Test with representative gameplay motion and audio, not a static screen alone.
Privacy, DVR and latency choices
- Privacy: Public streams are discoverable; unlisted streams are accessible to people with the link; private streams restrict access according to YouTube’s current privacy controls. Select the level that suits the audience and test the viewing link if the event is not public.
- DVR: YouTube’s DVR option lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream. Decide whether that viewing behavior suits a rerun, and check the event’s live settings.
- Latency: Lower latency can increase buffering. Because a prerecorded rerun usually does not need real-time interaction, stable playback may matter more than the shortest possible delay.
- Auto-start and auto-stop: These controls can change how the encoder feed becomes a live broadcast and how it ends. Check the current event settings instead of relying on an old launch sequence.
Troubleshoot common setup problems
The channel cannot go live yet
First-time live-stream activation may take up to 24 hours according to YouTube. Activate the feature early and verify the channel is eligible to create the event before the planned start.

YouTube receives no feed
Check that the encoder has the correct stream URL and current stream key, and that it is actively sending to the scheduled event. If the key may have been copied incorrectly or exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and replace it in the cloud service.
The preview is black, frozen or missing audio
Check the selected source file or playlist, playback position, audio track and encoder output. Test with a representative clip before launch and verify both picture and sound in the Live Control Room preview.

The stream health reports instability
Confirm the encoder’s bitrate, resolution and frame rate are within the service’s supported limits and compare the bitrate with YouTube’s recommendation for the selected codec and output. A bitrate recommendation is not a guarantee: reduce output demands if the service or delivery path cannot sustain them, then test again.
The broadcast does not start or stop as expected
Review the event’s current auto-start and auto-stop options and follow the Live Control Room prompt shown for that event. A scheduled broadcast and the encoder feed are separate pieces of the workflow, so verify both are configured correctly.
The stream is interrupted or removed
Check the cloud provider’s stream-health and recovery behavior, then inspect YouTube’s notifications and the event status. A technical reconnect does not resolve a rights issue; confirm that the gameplay and all included audio or other material are cleared for the stream.
