Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →For a mostly one-way internet radio simulcast, start with Normal latency in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. YouTube says Normal is intended for broadcasts without audience interaction and gives viewers the lowest buffering risk. Choose Low or Ultra-low only when faster host-and-audience exchange matters enough to accept more buffering exposure. Neither option guarantees a fixed delay, and Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K.
What latency means for an internet radio stream
Latency is the time between the station’s capture and encoding of a live feed and its display in a viewer’s player. A lower-latency setting reduces how much data the player reads ahead. That can make chat responses feel quicker, but leaves less buffer to absorb delivery changes, so buffering becomes more likely. Actual delay also depends on the encoder, ingestion protocol, network conditions and viewer playback conditions.
YouTube’s current Help guidance gives approximate latency expectations for most viewers, not guaranteed results for every listener or network. The figures below are YouTube’s product guidance; the Help page does not state a publication year.
Which latency setting should a radio station use?
| YouTube setting | Intended use and expected experience | Fit for a radio station |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | Non-interactive broadcasts; YouTube describes it as the highest-quality option, with the lowest viewer buffering. All resolutions and live features are supported. | Best starting point for continuous music, talk or a mostly one-way station simulcast. |
| Low | Limited interaction, such as polls where responses need not be immediate. YouTube says most viewers experience latency under 10 seconds; buffering exposure is higher than with Normal. | Consider it when occasional chat or host interaction is useful and a short delay is acceptable. |
| Ultra-low | Real-time conversation with viewers. YouTube says most viewers experience latency under five seconds; this mode has the greatest buffering exposure of the three. | Use when hosts actively respond to chat in near real time and the connection can reliably sustain the chosen bitrate. |
The under-10-second and under-five-second figures are approximate statements from YouTube for most viewers, not service-level guarantees. For a music-first station, faster interaction often brings little benefit to listeners; Normal is usually the practical choice unless the program depends on live audience exchange.

Set latency in YouTube Studio
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room for the broadcast.
- For an encoder-based stream, open the stream settings and select Normal latency, Low latency or Ultra-low latency according to the program’s interaction needs.
- Confirm that the chosen mode supports the intended resolution and ingestion protocol. Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K; HLS does not offer Ultra-low latency.
- Run a test with representative program audio, movement, encoder settings and network conditions before the scheduled broadcast. Watch stream health while testing.
YouTube’s webcam and mobile streaming workflows are set up for interactivity and do not expose this latency choice. The setting described here is for encoder-based streams.
Check the ingestion protocol and resolution
RTMP or RTMPS
YouTube describes RTMP/RTMPS as a continuous-streaming path with lower latency than HLS. Its encoder guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. It lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS and recommends RTMPS, the secure extension of RTMP. Follow current YouTube encoder guidance and your encoder’s supported settings when configuring the station feed.

HLS
HLS sends video in segments, so YouTube describes its ingestion path as higher latency than RTMP. YouTube disables Ultra-low latency when HLS is selected. For HLS, YouTube specifies transport-stream segments lasting one to four seconds; shorter segments reduce latency. It also requires a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. A station using HLS should choose between the available modes in its Live Control Room settings rather than expecting Ultra-low to be available.
Resolution
If the stream must be 4K, use Normal latency: YouTube says Low and Ultra-low do not support 4K, while Normal supports all resolutions. If the station does not need 4K, make the latency decision based on interaction needs and buffering tolerance instead.

Test bitrate and network headroom before going live
A stream that averages within the connection’s upload capacity can still buffer if the connection fluctuates or becomes congested. YouTube recommends testing before broadcast with audio and movement similar to the intended program, monitoring stream health, and choosing an upload bitrate the connection can reliably sustain. Its general streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom. If sending primary and backup streams, include both in the total bitrate when checking available upload capacity.
- Test the actual encoder, protocol, resolution, audio and network that the scheduled stream will use.
- Choose a bitrate the connection can sustain reliably, rather than treating the nominal upload speed as guaranteed usable capacity.
- Leave the recommended 20% upload headroom and account for primary and backup streams together where applicable.
- Check stream health during the test; do not assume that selecting a faster latency mode guarantees the same delay or playback quality for every viewer.
Troubleshoot common latency and playback problems
Ultra-low latency is unavailable
Check the ingestion protocol. YouTube disables Ultra-low when HLS is selected. If the stream is encoder-based and the protocol supports the option, verify the setting in the Live Control Room; webcam and mobile workflows do not expose the same latency choice.

4K cannot be selected with Low or Ultra-low
This is a mode limitation: YouTube does not support 4K with Low or Ultra-low. Switch to Normal latency if 4K is required, or use a supported lower resolution if faster interaction is more important.
Listeners report buffering after switching to a faster mode
Low and Ultra-low reduce the player’s read-ahead buffer. Test the connection at the selected bitrate, check stream health, and leave upload headroom. If interaction does not require a short delay, return to Normal to favor lower buffering exposure.

The delay is higher than expected
YouTube’s latency figures are approximate for most viewers, not guarantees. Check whether the stream uses HLS, which has higher latency than RTMP in YouTube’s description, and consider encoder, network and viewer playback conditions. HLS segment duration also affects latency within YouTube’s stated one-to-four-second range.
The stream is unstable even though average upload speed seems sufficient
Average bitrate alone does not account for congestion or changing network delivery. Test under realistic conditions, use a reliably sustainable upload bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended headroom. Include any backup stream in the total bitrate calculation.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the station’s goal is to keep a YouTube channel live continuously from uploaded recordings, StreamNeo can loop uploaded videos or playlists from the cloud. Upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key, then go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it is not a camera-based live broadcast.
