Yes, an eligible channel can enable monetization and ad settings on a YouTube live stream even when nobody is watching. But with zero viewers, there is no viewer playback in which an ad can actually appear. YouTube’s public documentation does not spell out the internal ad-serving sequence for a stream with exactly zero viewers; that distinction is an inference from YouTube’s descriptions of ads serving to viewers and its analytics definitions.
Ad settings are not the same as an ad impression
Turning on live-stream monetization makes ad formats available for eligible playback; it does not mean an ad has been delivered or counted. YouTube states that ad slots are not guaranteed to serve ads. With no one playing the stream, there is no viewer playback for an ad to appear in. Once viewers arrive, an ad may or may not be served to each of them.
A viewer who does not see an ad on one playback does not, by itself, show that monetization is broken. Ad availability and delivery can vary, including according to whether an ad is available for that viewer. YouTube’s ad analytics guidance explains how ad metrics relate to playback and impressions.
What you need to enable live-stream ad revenue
- Accept the Watch Page Monetization Module. YouTube requires this module for ad and YouTube Premium revenue from live-streaming videos on the Watch Page. See YouTube’s Watch Page monetization guidance.
- Turn on monetization for the live stream. When live-stream monetization is on, YouTube says pre-roll and display ads are automatically enabled. Mid-rolls can be automatic or inserted by the creator. For the available controls, see Monetize your live stream.
These steps configure the stream; they do not guarantee an ad for every slot or viewer.

Choose how to handle mid-rolls

These controls affect timing and interruption, not whether an ad can appear while nobody is watching. YouTube says viewers are not guaranteed a mid-roll: if one does not run, the stream continues; viewers who do see an ad rejoin when it ends or they skip it. What YouTube’s revenue statistic does—and doesn’t—tell you
YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled live automatic mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not. That was a group average across 207 countries in January 2024, as reported by YouTube in its live-stream monetization guidance. It is not a forecast or guarantee for an individual channel, and it does not imply revenue when a stream has no viewers.
