For a YouTube 24/7 live stream, choose a supported encoder format your equipment and internet connection can sustain continuously. YouTube’s live guidance supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 over RTMP or RTMPS. Use constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and a resolution and bitrate that fit your stable upload capacity. There is no single best codec for every setup: compatibility and reliability matter more than choosing the newest option.
Recommended live-stream settings
These settings apply to the video and audio your encoder sends to YouTube as a live stream. They are separate from settings for a video file you upload.
- Protocol: Use RTMPS when your encoder supports it. YouTube lists RTMP and RTMPS for live ingest and recommends the encrypted RTMPS option.
- Video codec: YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. Choose one supported by both your encoder and workflow; the platform does not name a universal winner.
- Bitrate mode: Set the encoder to constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set the interval to 2 seconds. Do not exceed 4 seconds.
- Frame rate: YouTube lists rates up to 60 fps. Use a rate your source and encoder can sustain; static or slow-moving scenes may not benefit as much from a higher rate as fast motion does.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC or MP3 for live ingest. For stereo, its recommendation is 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. For 5.1 audio over RTMP/RTMPS, use AAC; the recommendation is 48 kHz and 384 Kbps.
- Color: For SDR, YouTube recommends Rec. 709 and 8-bit. For HDR, its guidance recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR ingest in that guidance.
Choose a resolution and bitrate your connection can hold
YouTube’s live bitrate figures below are recommended video ingest rates in Mbps, not upload-file encoding recommendations. The H.264 and AV1/H.265 figures differ at the same resolution, so use the column for the codec you plan to send.
| Live resolution and frame rate | AV1 or H.265 recommended | H.264 recommended |
|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 6 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 12 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 15 Mbps | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 24 Mbps | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 (4K) | 30 Mbps | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 (4K) | 35 Mbps | 50 Mbps |
These are platform recommendations, not guarantees of picture quality or stream uptime. YouTube advises keeping total stream bitrate within available upload bandwidth and leaving 20% headroom. Select a lower resolution or bitrate if your connection cannot sustain the higher setting with that margin. A wired Ethernet connection may help avoid some wireless instability when your encoder and router support it, but it does not guarantee uninterrupted service.

YouTube automatically detects encoder settings by default. If you need to specify a resolution manually, its guidance says to use custom stream-key settings.
How to choose between H.264, H.265, and AV1
- Start with compatibility. Use a codec your encoder and chosen streaming workflow both support. A theoretically attractive codec is not useful if the encoder cannot send it reliably.
- Check your sustainable upload rate. Match the codec, resolution, and bitrate to what your connection can hold over time, with YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom.
- Match frame rate to the content. Fast gameplay can benefit from a higher frame rate if the source, encoder, and connection can sustain it. For a mostly static scene, a lower rate may be a more practical choice.
- Decide whether you need HDR. For HDR ingest, follow YouTube’s H.265/HEVC and 10-bit guidance. For SDR, use its Rec. 709 and 8-bit recommendation.
There is no reason to prepare a separate live ingest for every viewer’s device. YouTube says it transcodes a live stream into different output formats for viewers across devices and networks. Your job is to deliver a stable, supported input.

Test the stream before leaving it on
- Set up the encoder. Select RTMPS if supported, a compatible video codec, CBR, a 2-second keyframe interval, and a resolution and bitrate suitable for your connection. Configure audio and color for your intended stereo or 5.1, SDR or HDR setup.
- Measure the real upstream connection. Check that available upload bandwidth can carry the total stream bitrate with 20% headroom. Assess sustained performance, not just a momentary peak.
- Run a representative test. Include audio and movement similar to the actual content. A static test image alone will not reveal how the encoder and connection handle the motion in gameplay or other active scenes.
- Watch stream health and messages. Monitor YouTube’s stream-health information during the test and address warnings before relying on the setup for continuous operation.
- Choose latency separately from codec. Lower latency can increase playback buffering. If real-time audience interaction is not essential, low latency may be less important. DVR is a separate option that lets viewers pause and rewind a live stream when enabled.
Do not confuse live ingest with uploaded-video formats
A video file uploaded to YouTube and a live signal sent by an encoder are different workflows. YouTube’s upload guidance recommends an MP4 container, H.264 upload video, and variable bitrate, among other file-specific settings. Those are not a live-stream preset: YouTube’s live guidance instead specifies CBR and live ingest bitrate recommendations.

Common problems and fixes
- Unstable stream or dropped connection: Your bitrate may be too high for sustained upstream capacity, or the connection may be disrupted. Reduce the resolution or bitrate, preserve the recommended headroom, and retest under realistic conditions.
- Encoder settings are not accepted or the stream looks wrong: Confirm the encoder is using a codec supported by the chosen workflow and the recommended CBR and keyframe settings. If YouTube is choosing resolution automatically and you need a specific one, check its custom stream-key settings option.
- HDR ingest is not working as expected: Check that the signal uses H.265/HEVC and 10-bit; AV1 is not supported for HDR ingest in YouTube’s stated guidance. For SDR, use Rec. 709 and 8-bit.
- Viewers report buffering: A lower-latency setting can increase buffering. If live interaction is not required, reconsider whether you need low latency; also check that your outgoing stream is stable.
- The stream starts but fails during a long run: A successful start does not establish continuous reliability. Check stream-health messages and investigate encoder, network, or power interruptions.
