Why Does OBS Drop Frames During a 24/7 YouTube Stream?

First check which OBS counter is rising. Network-dropped frames point to an unstable connection to YouTube’s ingest server or a bitrate your connection cannot sustain. Rendering lag and encoding lag point to work your computer cannot finish on time. A 24/7 schedule alone does not identify the cause.

What OBS means by “dropped frames”

OBS separates network delivery problems from two kinds of local processing delays. Open View > Stats while streaming and watch these counters:

  • Dropped frames (Network): OBS cannot reliably send data to the remote server at the configured bitrate. OBS’s connection guide, published September 30, 2024, says this means the connection to the remote server is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. OBS: Dropped Frames and General Connection Issues.
  • Frames missed due to rendering lag: OBS cannot render and composite the scene in time, often because of GPU contention or demanding sources, filters, and output settings.
  • Skipped frames due to encoding lag: the selected encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough for the chosen output and workload. The limiting factor may be CPU capacity or a hardware encoder; the counter alone does not identify which.

OBS says network-dropped frames are extremely unlikely to be caused by OBS Studio itself. That guidance applies to the network counter, not to rendering or encoding lag. A viewer buffering is also not proof that OBS dropped frames: viewers’ devices, locations, and connections differ. OBS: Stream Connection Troubleshooting.

Diagnose the counter before changing settings

  1. In OBS, open View > Stats and note which counter increases. Record the figures and elapsed stream time, or take a screenshot, before changing anything.
  2. Check YouTube Studio’s live stream health and compare it with the OBS counters. YouTube recommends testing with audio and video movement similar to the real stream, rather than relying on a static scene alone. YouTube Help: Troubleshoot your live stream.
  3. Change one setting at a time, then compare the same counter over a useful interval. This helps distinguish a fix from a coincidental pause in the problem.

Without the OBS log, machine configuration, network measurements, and YouTube stream-health report, there is no reliable way to name a particular machine’s root cause. Use the rising counter to choose the branch below.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

If network-dropped frames are rising

Check whether your stable available upload capacity can carry the stream bitrate, with room left for variation and other network traffic. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and warns that shared networks can reduce the capacity available to your stream. Its guidance is to use a reliable connection because an interruption can break the stream. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

  • Test wired Ethernet if practical. A wired connection can remove Wi-Fi as one possible source of instability; it will not fix rendering or encoding lag.
  • Check other upload traffic. Backups, uploads, other streams, or household use can reduce the capacity available to OBS, especially on a shared connection.
  • Try another ingest server if one is available. A different route may behave better, but compare results rather than assuming the server is the cause.
  • Reduce the bitrate if capacity is the constraint. A lower stable bitrate is preferable to a higher target the connection cannot sustain.

YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations vary by resolution and frame rate. For 1080p60, the table lists 6 Mbps minimum and 17 Mbps recommended; for 1080p30, it lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular internet connection can sustain the stream. Check YouTube’s current table for other codecs and output formats.

If rendering lag is rising

Rendering lag means OBS is late preparing the scene, before the encoder finishes its work. Reduce GPU contention and scene complexity first:

  • Close other GPU-heavy applications and, when streaming a game, cap its frame rate or enable V-Sync where appropriate.
  • Simplify costly scenes, browser sources, and filters that are not needed for the stream.
  • Lower output resolution or frame rate if the counter continues to rise. Lowering frame rate can reduce both rendering and encoding work.
  • On Windows, try running OBS as administrator, as OBS suggests for GPU overload.

Make one adjustment at a time and observe the rendering counter again. Lowering bitrate alone is not a targeted fix for a scene that the GPU cannot render on time.

If encoding lag is rising

Encoding lag means the encoder is not keeping up with the output and workload. Reduce the work it must do by lowering resolution or frame rate, or by reducing other costly output demands. Check the OBS log for the encoder in use and overload messages before considering hardware changes; the symptom by itself does not establish that a CPU, GPU, or other component needs replacement. OBS’s troubleshooting guidance covers both rendering and encoding overload. OBS: Encoding Performance Troubleshooting.

Check YouTube’s stream settings

For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s encoder guidance specifies CBR, supports frame rates up to 60 fps, and recommends a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Follow the current YouTube guidance for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use; its bitrate recommendations differ by those settings. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

Do not treat a platform bitrate recommendation as a target your upload must always use. The total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth, and YouTube recommends reserving 20% headroom. A shared or variable connection may not provide its apparent peak capacity consistently. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

What a 24/7 schedule changes

The duration does not tell you whether the problem is network, rendering, or encoding; the counter still determines the diagnostic path. Continuous streaming does create an archive risk: YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording if the replay matters. If you need both a multi-day watch page and a complete replay, plan how to segment archives and where to store local recordings before going live. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
