Yes, you can reuse a custom YouTube stream key for more than one YouTube broadcast. But it is not a universal password for other platforms: when you stream to multiple services, each destination may require its own stream key and server URL. Use the credentials and protocol specified by each destination, unless your encoder or cloud relay manages those connections for you.
What a YouTube stream key does
A stream key is a credential that lets YouTube identify and accept the video feed your encoder sends. YouTube describes stream keys as being like your stream’s “password and address.” The key is for sending a feed to YouTube; it should not be treated as a general credential for unrelated streaming services. Reusing a key for another YouTube broadcast
YouTube supports reusable custom stream keys. In YouTube Studio, create or select a custom key in your live-stream settings, then choose that key in your encoder when you send another broadcast to YouTube. Streaming to YouTube and another service
For simulstreaming, configure each destination with the information it requires. YouTube’s instructions say to find the stream key and RTMP server URL for each platform, unless your encoder does not require those details. A relay service may accept one incoming feed and handle separate destination connections, but its setup and supported destinations determine whether you need to enter credentials separately. Use the right key, server URL and protocol for each destination
A key alone does not establish a connection. Match the destination’s server URL and supported protocol to the encoder or relay configuration. YouTube documents distinct RTMP(S) and HLS setup paths, so check which method your chosen workflow requires. Set up an HLS stream · Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
Set up the workflow
- Choose the destinations. Decide whether you are sending only to YouTube or simulstreaming to YouTube and another service.
- Get each destination’s connection details. For YouTube, select the intended stream key and server information in YouTube Studio or Live Control Room. For another platform, use the key, server URL and protocol it provides.
- Configure your encoder or relay. Enter each destination’s details where the software requires them. If a service manages destination connections for you, follow its instructions for connecting YouTube and any other platforms.
- Check the destination and connection before going live. If the connection fails, verify the server URL, protocol and destination credentials against the relevant platform’s current guidance.
If a stream key may have been exposed
Reset the compromised key in YouTube Live Control Room, then replace the old key in your encoder configuration with the new one. YouTube specifically advises updating encoder software after resetting the key. Manage live stream settings

Troubleshooting connection problems
- The encoder cannot connect to YouTube: Check that the selected stream key belongs to the intended YouTube stream and that the server URL and protocol match the encoder setup.
- YouTube works but the other platform does not: Confirm that the other service’s own key and server URL are configured. Do not assume the YouTube key is accepted there.
- An RTMPS connection fails: Verify the RTMPS server address and confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS, as YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends. Encrypt your stream using RTMPS
- A relay asks for credentials: Follow the relay’s destination-specific instructions. Whether it requires separate keys and URLs depends on how that service handles each platform connection.
