To keep audio in sync on a continuous YouTube live stream, first find where the mismatch begins: in your local capture or encoder, or only in YouTube playback. Then determine whether the error stays constant or grows over time, check stream health and connection stability, and make one measured adjustment at a time. There is no universal sync offset that fixes every setup.
Audio sync and stream latency are different problems
Audio/video sync is the alignment of sound with the picture. Stream latency is the delay from camera capture to display for viewers. YouTube explains that lower latency reduces the player’s read-ahead buffer; that can make buffering more likely, but changing latency is not the same as correcting an audio offset. YouTube Help’s latency guidance describes the trade-offs.
Keep that distinction in mind when a viewer reports delayed audio. A stream can have substantial viewer delay and still have sound aligned with the picture. Conversely, an audio-sync problem can exist in a local recording even before the stream reaches YouTube.
Run a representative test before the broadcast
YouTube recommends testing with audio and motion resembling the actual event, and monitoring stream health during the broadcast. If your channel workflow permits, use a private or unlisted test and let it run long enough to reproduce the reported issue. Include spoken words and visible movement, such as a presenter speaking while moving or a game scene with clear action.

- Record the starting setup. Note the microphone or other audio source, camera or capture source, audio sample rate, frame rate, encoder settings, and whether the issue appears in a local recording as well as YouTube playback.
- Check the local recording or encoder preview. Compare an obvious sound event, such as a spoken consonant or clap, with a visible action. Determine whether audio leads the picture or trails it.
- Check YouTube Live Control Room. Review stream health and messages before and during the test. YouTube’s API documentation lists health-status issues such as low video bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio, among other ingestion and configuration problems: LiveStreams health documentation.
- Change one thing at a time. If you change an offset, bitrate, sample rate, and capture setting together, you will not know which change mattered. Keep a note of each adjustment and retest.
Check stream format and health before adjusting sync
Use settings appropriate to the protocol you are sending. For RTMP/RTMPS, YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video and AAC or MP3 audio, with constant bitrate (CBR). It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its audio recommendations include 44.1 kHz for stereo or 48 kHz for 5.1, with audio bitrates of 128 Kbps for stereo or 384 Kbps for 5.1. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current settings and protocol details.
These values are format guidance, not a lip-sync tolerance. A stream meeting them is not guaranteed to be synchronized, and changing an otherwise stable format is not a substitute for locating the source of the mismatch.

If you use HLS rather than RTMP/RTMPS, follow YouTube’s separate HLS setup guidance; its supported audio options differ. YouTube specifies HLS segment durations of 1–4 seconds, with shorter segments producing lower latency. HLS latency and audio/video alignment are still separate concerns.
Find where the mismatch starts
The local recording or preview is already out of sync
Investigate the source chain before blaming YouTube delivery. Check audio routing, the selected microphone or sound device, capture-device timing, and encoder configuration. If the audio leads or trails consistently, and the error is repeatable, use the streaming software’s sync controls for a small measured correction. Retest after each change; which direction and amount are appropriate depends on which source is early and how your software defines its offset control.

A capture device can be part of a particular setup’s problem, but buying a new capture card is not a general fix for timing drift, routing mistakes, encoding issues, or viewer buffering. Consider capture hardware only if your tests implicate that part of the chain. AVerMedia discusses capture-chain sync in its OBS and Streamlabs OBS troubleshooting material; it does not establish that replacing hardware will solve other causes.
The local capture is aligned, but YouTube playback is not
Compare playback on another viewer device or connection, then review YouTube stream health and any buffering reports. If the local source remains aligned but playback varies between viewers or over time, treat delivery and buffering as possibilities rather than applying a fixed audio offset based on one viewer’s experience.

The error is constant or grows over time
- Constant and repeatable: identify whether audio leads or lags, make a small measured correction in the relevant software control, and repeat the test.
- It grows during a long stream: run a longer test and look for inconsistent timing or configuration between sources, resource warnings, and dropped frames. The cause depends on the setup; there is no single universal explanation or correction.
- It appears with dropped frames or disconnects: investigate network stability and whether your selected bitrate is sustainable before treating it as an offset problem.
Choose latency for the audience, not as a sync fix
YouTube offers normal, low, and ultra-low latency. Normal latency suits non-interactive streams and supports all resolutions and features. YouTube says most viewers on low-latency streams experience less than 10 seconds of latency, and most viewers on ultra-low-latency streams less than five seconds; those are typical viewer-latency figures, not acceptable audio-sync error limits. Low and ultra-low latency exclude 4K, and lower latency increases buffering risk. Choose a mode based on how much real-time interaction your broadcast needs and how much buffering risk is acceptable, not to correct lip-sync. See YouTube’s explanation of live-stream latency.
Troubleshoot breakup, dropped frames, and changing sync
If audio or video breaks up, or dropped frames occur around the same time as the sync complaint, check whether the connection can sustain the chosen bitrate. OBS describes dropped frames as a sign that the connection is unstable or cannot keep up with the selected bitrate. Its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, dated 2024-09-30, recommends testing the connection, adjusting bitrate, and investigating software or hardware along the network path.

Or let it run in the cloud
If the issue is keeping a prerecorded program running continuously rather than syncing a live camera production, StreamNeo is a YouTube-only cloud service: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Videos stream as uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card required. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. This is for uploaded video, not a camera-based live production, and it does not replace diagnosing an audio-sync fault in your source files or stream chain.
