Keep OBS connected to YouTube and change the video inside OBS: use Media Sources for individual files, or a VLC Video source for a playlist, then switch scenes without ending the live stream. The encoder connection stays in place while the content changes. A scene switch can still briefly show a blank or frozen frame, or affect audio, so rehearse the exact files and transitions before going live.
How the switch works
YouTube receives a continuous feed from your encoder. YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room provides the stream URL and stream key that connect OBS to that feed; OBS determines which video is in the output. Changing an OBS scene changes the content being sent, not the YouTube event itself. You do not need to end and restart the stream for each prerecorded video. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection, and the OBS Overview Guide describes scenes and transitions.
“Without interrupting” means keeping the encoder session live. It is not a guarantee that every transition will be visually or audibly perfect: loading, decoding, audio routing, and computer performance can introduce a brief artifact. OBS and YouTube recommend testing and monitoring rather than promising frame-perfect transitions.
Set up OBS and connect it to YouTube
- In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and set up an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key as a credential: do not share it or show it on stream.
- In OBS, enter the YouTube connection details. Open Settings and select Stream, choose YouTube as the service, then use the stream key and server details provided by YouTube. OBS and YouTube interface labels may change between versions; follow the current encoder instructions in YouTube Help.
- Start the encoder feed and check the preview. Confirm that Live Control Room receives the OBS output before starting the event for viewers. YouTube recommends previewing and testing the stream before going live. See YouTube’s live-streaming guidance.
Choose how OBS plays the videos
Use Media Source for one file at a time
Add a Media Source to a scene and select a local video file. OBS supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM; the file still needs to decode correctly on the computer running OBS. In the source properties, choose whether playback should restart when the source becomes active, whether it should loop, and whether it should hide after playback ends. These controls are documented in the OBS Media Sources guide.

For separately controlled segments, create a scene for each video or segment. Name scenes clearly so you can identify the next item quickly. If you enable Close file when inactive, OBS notes that the file may take a short time to reload when you show it again; leaving it loaded can avoid that particular reload delay but uses system resources.
Use VLC Video for a playlist
For automatic sequential playback, add a VLC Video source and add the files to its playlist. VLC must be installed, and its architecture must match OBS: the OBS guide specifies 64-bit VLC for 64-bit OBS. VLC Video has loop and shuffle controls, so check the chosen order and playback behavior in a rehearsal. Consult the OBS Media Sources guide for the source’s controls.

Switch scenes while the stream stays live
- Prepare the next scene. Add the next video source and confirm its file, playback settings, and audio. For a manual program, keep each segment in its own clearly named scene.
- Choose a transition. In OBS, select the target scene and use the configured scene transition controls. You can also assign scene-switching hotkeys in OBS settings; test them before the event so a mistyped or conflicting key does not change the wrong scene.
- Monitor the outgoing feed. Watch OBS’s program output and YouTube’s stream preview or watch page. Confirm that the new picture appears and that audio is neither missing nor overlapping.
- Continue changing scenes as needed. Leave the YouTube encoder connection running; do not end the event to change prerecorded content.
OBS’s Sources Guide covers source visibility and the Overview Guide covers scenes and transitions. Neither establishes a universal transition delay or guarantees artifact-free playback across all files and computers.
Rehearse and monitor before and during the broadcast
- Test the same files, OBS scenes, computer, and transition timing you intend to use live.
- Include representative motion and audio. Check the beginning and end of each clip, not just a middle section.
- Preview in Live Control Room before the event, then monitor stream health while live. YouTube recommends testing and checking the stream rather than relying only on the local OBS preview: YouTube live-streaming guidance.
- Confirm that the stream’s content and audio are authorized for use. Prerecording does not exempt a broadcast from copyright rules or YouTube policies; see the copyright safety checklist for a practical review.
Troubleshoot gaps, frozen video, and audio issues
A brief blank or frozen frame appears during a change
- Check whether the source is configured to close while inactive; OBS warns that reopening a closed file can cause a short delay.
- Check whether decoding has caught up and whether the source is visible in the intended scene.
- Rehearse the transition with the same files and timing. A successful local preview is useful, but confirm the actual YouTube feed too.
Audio disappears or overlaps
- Check the audio behavior of both the outgoing and incoming sources and the scenes where they are used.
- Test the transition in a preview stream with representative audio. Audio routing depends on the scene and source design; there is no single configuration that fits every setup.
A viewer says the new segment has not started
YouTube DVR lets viewers pause and rewind. Someone watching behind the live edge may still see the previous segment even though the encoder is sending the new one. That alone does not mean the stream has stopped. Details are in YouTube’s DVR guidance.

End the broadcast cleanly
When the event is over, end it in Live Control Room and stop the encoder feed as YouTube directs. Do not treat a scene change as a stream-ending action. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; this is the platform’s current guidance, accessed in 2026, and should not be read as a guarantee for longer streams.
