For a 24/7 YouTube music radio stream, use an encoder-fed YouTube Live stream—not a special YouTube video-playlist format. RTMPS is the practical default for a conventional setup. HLS is an alternative for compatible workflows, but it requires segmented output and a rolling media manifest. A YouTube playlist groups published videos; it does not carry a live broadcast.
First, distinguish a YouTube playlist from an HLS playlist
A YouTube video playlist organizes published videos, such as past broadcasts, mixes, or highlight clips. An HLS playlist is a media manifest that a compatible encoder updates as it sends segments to YouTube Live. It is part of the live-ingestion workflow, not a playlist setting on your channel.
To broadcast music continuously, create or schedule a live stream in YouTube Live Control Room, then configure an encoder with the server URL and stream key shown there. YouTube describes the encoder as the software or hardware that converts and sends the live program. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
RTMPS vs. HLS: which ingestion format should you use?

The incoming format is not the same as each viewer’s playback format: YouTube transcodes the live feed for viewers on different devices and networks.

Set up a conventional RTMPS music stream
- Create the live event: In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Copy the server URL and stream key provided for that event.
- Configure your encoder: Paste in the server URL and stream key. Use an encoder preset compatible with YouTube’s documented settings. For a conventional SDR, audio-led program, start with H.264 video and AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe frequency.
- Set audio deliberately: YouTube’s documented stereo audio settings include 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps. Check the encoder’s audio output and confirm that the signal is stereo if that is what your program requires.
- Use RTMPS where available: YouTube recommends RTMPS as the secure form of RTMP. Select the RTMPS server option in the encoder if it offers one.
- Test before relying on the stream: Run a representative test with the actual kind of audio and motion you plan to broadcast. Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and listen to the output. YouTube recommends upload-bandwidth headroom of 20%; treat that as a margin above the stream’s required bitrate, not as a substitute for a stable connection.
- Choose live and archive behavior: Review DVR settings and decide whether viewers should be able to pause or rewind. YouTube documents DVR controls and says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in the encoder workflow. Its cited guidance does not establish the duration limit for a single uninterrupted 24/7 event, so test event duration, restart behavior, and how you will preserve archives before depending on a continuous broadcast.

When HLS is the right choice
Choose HLS only when your encoder or production requirements call for it and the encoder can meet YouTube’s ingestion rules. Configure TS output, segments of 1–4 seconds, HTTPS POST/PUT, and a rolling manifest with no more than five outstanding segments. Account for HLS’s higher latency than RTMP, and verify that your encoder handles the rolling list correctly. HLS is not a way to turn an ordinary channel playlist into a live stream.

Plan continuity, archives, and music rights
Continuity and recovery
A 24/7 schedule needs monitoring and a recovery plan; the encoder instructions do not guarantee uninterrupted operation. Check stream health, decide how you will detect a dropped feed, and test how the encoder and YouTube event behave after a disconnection or restart.
Archives and channel playlists
Once YouTube has produced an archive or you have separate published mixes, use ordinary YouTube playlists to organize them around the listener experience—for example, one collection for full radio archives and another for selected programs or highlights. YouTube’s guidance on promoting streams includes ways to organize and surface published content: promote your live stream.

Technical compatibility does not grant broadcast rights. Confirm that the rights you hold cover the actual tracks, the territories where you intend to stream, and any intended monetization. A stream format or YouTube playlist does not establish that a catalog is cleared.
