Yes, but only if your specific laptop stays awake, powered and connected with the lid closed. If closing it puts the computer to sleep, the encoder stops sending video and your YouTube stream will drop. Windows lets you configure the lid action; a Mac normally sleeps when you close the display unless you use a supported closed-display setup. Test your exact setup before depending on it for continuous streaming.
What has to stay working
A laptop can run a software encoder for a YouTube stream, but that does not establish that every model can sustain the workload for 24 hours. With the lid closed, the computer must remain awake, have reliable power and internet, and keep the encoder connected. The operating system, laptop model and configuration all matter; there is no universal 24/7 endurance or temperature specification established for laptops.
- Sleep behavior: closing the lid must not suspend the computer.
- Power: use reliable AC power and confirm the laptop does not shut down or sleep during the stream.
- Network and encoder: the upload connection and encoding process must keep operating.
- Monitoring: check YouTube’s preview and stream health, and continue monitoring audio and video after the test.
Configure a Windows laptop
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > Power Options.
- Select Choose what closing the lid does.
- In the Plugged in column, choose an action that does not suspend the computer, if that option is available.
- Save the change, connect AC power, then test with the lid closed while watching the encoder and YouTube preview.

Configure a Mac
Assume that closing a Mac laptop’s display will put it to sleep unless you are using an Apple-supported closed-display configuration. Apple’s guidance for MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models with M3 specifies an external display, external keyboard and mouse or trackpad, and power. The cited macOS requirements are Sonoma 14.3 or later for MacBook Air and 14.6 or later for MacBook Pro. Other Mac models may have different conditions, so check the guidance for your model and operating system.

Test the stream before relying on it
- Check channel eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live streaming activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance
- Set up the encoder. YouTube supports computer-based streaming with software encoders. Configure the encoder and stream key, then verify that YouTube receives the signal in its preview. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions
- Test lid closure. Start an unlisted or otherwise suitable test stream, close the lid, and confirm that the encoder remains connected and the YouTube preview continues. Check the picture and audio rather than assuming that a connected status means the whole broadcast is healthy.
- Check sustained upload capacity. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate. For H.264 at 1080p and 30 fps, its table lists 5 Mbps as the minimum and 14 Mbps as the recommended bitrate. Those are encoder-setting recommendations, not a guarantee that your connection will remain stable. - Monitor for interruptions. YouTube recommends testing the setup, checking the preview and monitoring stream health. Plan separately for a 24-hour archive
YouTube’s encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That guidance does not promise an automatic archive for a 24-hour stream. Decide whether a laptop is the right method
A laptop-and-encoder setup is suited to a stream you produce on the computer, including real-time content, provided the machine and connection remain stable. For prerecorded video, YouTube’s encoder list also describes Gyre as a cloud-based tool for 24/7 streaming. That listing is specifically relevant to prerecorded content; it does not establish Gyre’s price, reliability or partner terms, or make it a solution for every live camera stream. Compare the options by whether you need real-time camera production or prerecorded playback, whether the closed lid keeps the laptop awake, whether upload capacity supports your quality, whether you need a continuous local archive, and how you will detect and recover from a failure. There is no comparative endurance evidence here to establish that a particular laptop model is suitable for 24/7 use.
