You can stream MP4 and MKV files in one FFmpeg playlist if their contained audio and video streams are compatible—not merely because their filenames have different extensions. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer requires matching stream layouts, codecs, and time bases. If the files differ, normalize or transcode them to a common profile before streaming.
Why MP4 and MKV extensions do not determine compatibility
MP4 and MKV are containers: wrappers that can hold different video and audio streams. An MP4 and an MKV may contain compatible streams, while two files with the same extension may not. FFmpeg’s concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. It reads the files sequentially and adjusts timestamps; mismatched layouts or inaccurate duration metadata can cause playback problems. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Inspect the actual streams before building the playlist. Compare video and audio stream counts, codecs, time bases, dimensions, frame rates, pixel formats, and audio parameters. If relevant properties differ, do not assume that -c copy will make the files compatible.
Inspect the files before creating the playlist
Use ffprobe or an equivalent media-inspection tool on every file. For example:

ffprobe -hide_banner -i clip-one.mp4Repeat for each playlist entry and compare the reported video and audio streams. Look for differences in codec, stream count, time base, resolution, frame rate, pixel format, sample rate, channel layout, or other audio parameters. The inspection is a compatibility check, not a guarantee that the selected output container can carry every stream; test the intended output as well.
- If the files have matching stream layouts and parameters, try the concat demuxer with stream copy.
- If they differ, transcode or preprocess all entries to a shared profile before playlisting.
- If you need filters or must reconcile differing streams, use a workflow that decodes and re-encodes, such as a concat-filter approach.
Create a concat-demuxer playlist
Make a plain-text, UTF-8 playlist file, for example playlist.txt:

file '/media/clip-three.mp4'Use the concat demuxer to read the list sequentially. The following is a starting point for simple paths and a typical invocation; output options must match your files, FFmpeg build, and selected YouTube ingest protocol.

-f flv "rtmp://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"Replace the example ingest URL and key with the values shown for your YouTube stream, and confirm that your FFmpeg build and source streams support the chosen output. The example maps the first video and first audio stream; it is not appropriate for every file or stream layout. -safe 0 permits paths outside the concat demuxer’s restricted safe subset, so use it only with a playlist you control. Check the installed FFmpeg version’s documentation because online documentation may describe a newer revision.

Choose stream copy or transcoding
Use stream copy only when the streams and output are suitable
With -c copy, FFmpeg copies encoded packets without decoding, filtering, or encoding. That avoids re-encoding loss and reduces processing, but it cannot repair incompatible streams or apply filters. FFmpeg also notes that stream copy can fail when information required by the target container is unavailable. Read the FFmpeg streamcopy documentation.
Transcode mismatched files to a common profile
If stream layouts or relevant parameters differ, make every playlist item conform to a shared output profile before relying on the concat demuxer. Choose a consistent video codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, time base, and audio format, then verify the resulting files. A concat filter is another option when re-encoding is required; FFmpeg distinguishes that approach from the concat demuxer’s stream-copy-oriented use in its concatenating media FAQ.

There is no universally reliable complete command without knowing the inputs, local FFmpeg build, selected YouTube protocol, and target profile. In particular, stream copy does not make unlike files alike.
Set YouTube Live encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest and H.264, H.265 (HEVC), or AV1 video, with AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval, and says the interval should not exceed four seconds. It also recommends 128 Kbps stereo audio, square pixels, progressive scan, and Rec. 709 for SDR. Use the protocol and settings displayed in Live Control Room for your stream, and confirm your FFmpeg build supports the selected codecs and output.

YouTube’s H.264 bitrate examples are recommendations, not proof that a particular connection can sustain them:

These figures come from YouTube’s published encoder settings, accessed October 3, 2026; consult its current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the complete table and any updates. Match the bitrate to the chosen output and a reliable upload connection, leaving headroom rather than treating the minimum as a target for an unstable link.

- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and select or create the live stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream into the FFmpeg output configuration. The exact protocol and available settings should come from the current Live Control Room configuration; see YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
- Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it or share it in logs or screenshots. Reset it if it is exposed.
- Before the intended broadcast, test with representative movement and audio. Check that the playlist advances, sound is present, and YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream.
- Monitor YouTube stream health during the event and respond to its warnings; a successful FFmpeg connection alone does not establish that the broadcast is healthy.
Troubleshoot common playlist and stream problems
