Use the video effects in your meeting app: choose Blur, then preview your camera before joining or while you are on the call. Google Meet, Zoom, and Microsoft Teams all provide built-in blur controls, though availability and labels depend on your device, account, and administrator settings. Blur can make a background less distinct, but it is not a privacy guarantee.
Google Meet: blur your background
Before joining on a computer
- Open the meeting and check the self-view preview.
- Select the Blur control at the bottom right of the self-view.
- Check the preview to see whether the effect is available and working as expected.
During a meeting
- Open Video settings.
- Choose Blur background.
- Review your self-view after the effect is applied.
Meet also offers slight blur, custom backgrounds, AI-generated backgrounds, and other effects. Which options appear depends on the client, account type, and administrator settings. Google says Meet can select device or cloud processing automatically; effects may increase battery use or slow a device. If the call becomes sluggish or your battery is low, turn effects off. Zoom: enable background blur
Zoom desktop app
- Before a meeting, open Settings > Video & effects > Backgrounds, then select Blur.
- During a meeting, select the arrow next to Video and enable Blur my background.
Zoom on Android or iOS
- During a meeting, open More > Settings > Virtual background.
- Select Blur.
Zoom says desktop blur relies on its virtual-background system requirements for use without a green screen; mobile devices also have virtual-background requirements. The blur choice can remain the default for later meetings. Administrators can enable or disable virtual backgrounds and AI-generated backgrounds. Microsoft Teams: choose a blur effect
Before joining
- Open Effects and avatars in the pre-join screen.
- Select the dropdown beside Blur.
- Choose Standard blur or Portrait blur, then check your preview.
During a meeting
- Open More actions > Video effects and settings > Video effects.
- Select a blur option and preview it if useful.
- Select Apply.
Teams background effects may be unavailable on some devices. Microsoft’s current instructions say Linux users and users on optimized VDI cannot use background effects; Android support also depends on app, operating-system, and GPU requirements. Microsoft Teams background instructions.

Blur versus AI-generated decoration
Blurring softens the visible room; Teams’ Decorate effect is a separate AI-generated background option. Microsoft describes its background effects as using AI and the camera to isolate a person’s silhouette and transform the surroundings. Which effects you can use may depend on your device and account configuration. Microsoft’s overview of Teams virtual backgrounds.
Why the blur option may be missing or perform poorly
- Device or app support: The feature may not be supported by the device or client you are using. Check the platform’s requirements and update the app if appropriate.
- Account or administrator restrictions: An account edition or organization policy may limit background effects, including generated backgrounds.
- Virtual desktop setup: Teams background effects are unavailable to users on optimized VDI, according to Microsoft’s current instructions.
- Slow performance or battery drain: Effects can add processing load. In Meet, turn them off if the device slows down or the battery is low.
- Blur is not concealing enough: Check what remains visible in the preview and move sensitive items out of camera view. Microsoft warns that sensitive information may remain visible after blurring or replacing a background.
Privacy and setup checks before a call
- Preview the camera image after applying the effect; do not assume blur hides every object, label, screen, or person.
- Move confidential papers and screens out of view when privacy matters.
- If the effect is unavailable, use the app’s supported client or device, or choose a less sensitive camera position rather than relying on a setting you cannot verify.
- A green screen is not established as necessary for the built-in workflows described here. Zoom’s desktop requirement specifically discusses virtual-background use without one.
