How to Make a 24/7 YouTube Music Radio Stream With a Playlist File

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You need a music source, an encoder that sends a continuous live feed, and a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled. A playlist file can describe what to play, but it is not itself a YouTube live stream: the encoder must turn the music and any visual layer into a feed YouTube can ingest. YouTube lists OBS among encoders that support HLS output. The available documentation does not establish a verified OBS setting sequence for looping a local music playlist file, so this guide separates the confirmed YouTube setup from that unresolved local-playback step.

What you need before you start

  • A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled: make sure you can access YouTube’s Live Control Room. Channel eligibility and activation requirements can vary; check the current requirements in YouTube Help rather than relying on old community guides or assuming a fixed waiting period.
  • Music you have the right to stream: owning a copy or having a general music license does not necessarily prevent a live-stream interruption. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content, and a rights owner may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID.
  • A music source and encoder: the playlist or audio source supplies what plays; an encoder packages it as a continuous live feed and sends it to YouTube. OBS is one documented HLS-capable encoder.
  • A visual layer, if wanted: a static image or other visual can accompany the audio in the encoder’s output. The YouTube ingest documentation does not prescribe how to create that layer.

How the playlist-to-YouTube workflow fits together

Think of the broadcast as three linked parts: a local source provides the music, an encoder creates and transmits the live feed, and YouTube receives that feed through a configured stream. A playlist file is not the same thing as YouTube’s HLS media playlist. In HLS documentation, a playlist is the rolling ingest manifest that describes the order of media segments being sent; it does not explain how an audio player or OBS should open and loop a local music playlist.

That distinction matters if your goal is uninterrupted playback. You must confirm that your chosen player and encoder can read your particular playlist format, advance tracks, and repeat the list as intended. The available platform instructions do not verify a specific local playlist format or looping recipe, so do not assume that importing a playlist into OBS—or choosing HLS—will make it loop automatically.

Set up YouTube ingest using HLS

Use the HLS workflow if your encoder supports it and you need its supported ingest formats or features. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency than continuous RTMP because it transmits in segments. That is an ingest trade-off, not a guarantee of uninterrupted 24/7 operation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  1. Open YouTube Live Control Room and start the stream setup. Confirm that live streaming is available on your channel before building the rest of the setup.
  2. Choose HLS as the stream protocol in the YouTube setup. YouTube’s HLS instructions provide the stream-creation flow, including creation of an HLS stream key and the ingest URL.
  3. Copy the HLS ingest URL and stream key into your encoder. Use the fields and labels shown by your current YouTube and encoder interfaces; interface details can change. Keep the key private because it authorizes a broadcast to your channel.
  4. Configure the encoder to meet YouTube’s HLS ingest requirements. YouTube specifies MPEG-2 TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds and a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments. Its HLS request requirements include HTTPS POST/PUT. These are protocol requirements; they should not be mistaken for a complete set of OBS menu settings.
  5. Choose compatible audio output. YouTube lists AAC, AC3, and EAC3 as HLS audio codecs. Its HLS help recommends 44.1 kHz for stereo audio and 128 Kbps for stereo audio. These are YouTube recommendations, not a promise that a particular source, encoder, or network will remain stable around the clock.
  6. Start the feed and check Live Control Room. Watch for stream status, warnings, and copyright notices. Confirm the audio and any visual layer are reaching YouTube before treating the broadcast as live.

Choose an ingest method around your actual needs

HLS is not automatically the best choice for every 24/7 music channel. Compare the methods your encoder supports based on output compatibility, acceptable latency, operator familiarity, and how you plan to recover if the feed stops. YouTube describes HLS as higher latency than continuous RTMP; select a method that fits your needs rather than assuming protocol choice alone provides reliability or automatic failover.

Copyright checks and interruptions

YouTube says, “All live streams are scanned for matches to third-party content, including copyrighted content in the form of another live broadcast.” A match may lead to a placeholder, warning, interruption, or termination. If YouTube identifies material, review the notice and stop or resolve the affected content. If you have permission to use the music, ask the rights owner to allowlist your channel through Content ID where needed; permission by itself does not ensure the automated system will let the stream continue without allowlisting.

What a 24/7 setup does—and does not—guarantee

The YouTube HLS setup explains how to create and send an ingest feed. It does not establish a guaranteed 24/7 hosting architecture, local playlist-loop settings, VPS requirements, automatic failover, or a continuous uptime level. With a self-hosted encoder, the playback device, encoder process, power, and network all remain part of your operating setup. Test the full chain—including track transitions and recovery after a source or connection interruption—before relying on it for continuous broadcasting.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you would rather not keep a local computer and encoder running, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded material from the cloud. It is for uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and streams to YouTube.
