To restart an FFmpeg stream automatically after a Raspberry Pi loses power, run the working FFmpeg command as a systemd service and enable that service at boot. Then reboot the Pi and verify both the Linux service and YouTube’s incoming stream: a running process alone does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy feed.
Before you create the service
First confirm that your stream works when started manually. The service must use the same FFmpeg command, input, file paths, environment variables and permissions. The input might be a camera, a video file or another feed; the right capture command depends on the Pi hardware, Raspberry Pi OS version and capture software. Do not assume a legacy raspivid command applies to a current setup.
A Raspberry Pi 4 project documents one FFmpeg-and-systemd-on-boot implementation, but it is an example rather than a universal configuration. The available guidance does not establish one camera command, unit file or Pi model that suits every workload. See the project example and validate your own command on the target device.
Create a systemd service for FFmpeg
Put the stream process in a unit file, or have the unit call a maintained executable script. Choose the service user and working directory deliberately, and make sure that user can read the input and configuration. Set any required environment variables explicitly rather than relying on values that exist only in your interactive shell.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a simple command, have systemd execute FFmpeg directly. A shell pipeline or other shell syntax placed in ExecStart is not automatically interpreted by a shell; put complex command logic in a script or invoke a shell explicitly. Quote paths and arguments appropriately. These are configuration principles, not a tested, drop-in unit for every Pi, OS release or input device.
Keep the YouTube stream key in a restricted configuration file or another protected source available to the service. YouTube describes the key as the password and address for the stream. Do not put it in a public repository, screenshot or log. If it is exposed, an owner or manager can reset it in YouTube’s Live Control Room and then update the encoder. YouTube Help: stream keys.

Enable the service at boot
- Install the unit. Save the service file in the appropriate systemd service location for your setup. Use your own service name and paths; do not copy a project’s names blindly.
- Reload systemd’s unit definitions. Run
sudo systemctl daemon-reloadafter creating or changing the unit. - Enable it for future boots. Run
sudo systemctl enable your-stream.service, replacing the example name with the unit’s actual name. Enablement is what schedules the service to start on boot; manually starting FFmpeg once does not do that. - Start it now to check the configuration. Run
sudo systemctl start your-stream.service. Resolve any startup error before relying on the next reboot. - Inspect the result. Run
systemctl status your-stream.serviceandjournalctl -u your-stream.service. The first shows the unit’s state; the journal helps identify whether FFmpeg could not launch or failed after launch.
The Pi 4 project documents copying its service file, reloading systemd, enabling and starting the unit, and using status and journal checks. Adapt those steps to your service rather than assuming its filenames and paths apply to yours. Project installation and diagnostics.
Account for devices and network that come up late
After power returns, the Pi may boot before Wi-Fi or Ethernet is ready, a camera is available, or a mounted drive containing the video has appeared. If FFmpeg starts too early, it can exit even though the unit is enabled correctly. Configure service dependencies and retry behavior for the actual input and network arrangement. Avoid a tight restart loop, and test on the Pi: there is no single retry policy established for every Raspberry Pi OS release and stream source.

Confirm that the service account can access the camera, file, mount and key configuration. If the video is on removable or network storage, make sure it is mounted before FFmpeg tries to open it. If the stream depends on network connectivity, allow for it to become available and check what the unit does when the connection drops.
Choose YouTube-compatible video and network settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance supports RTMP or RTMPS; H.264, H.265/HEVC or AV1 video; up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and constant bitrate (CBR) encoding. YouTube recommends RTMPS, its secure extension to RTMP. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Choose settings the Pi’s encoding path and connection can sustain, then test them before relying on unattended operation. YouTube Live encoder and network recommendations.

The H.264 bitrate figures below are YouTube’s ingest recommendations, not performance guarantees for a Raspberry Pi:
| Target video | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 6 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
YouTube advises that total stream bitrate fit the available upload bandwidth, with 20% headroom, and warns that network disruptions can break a stream. A bitrate recommendation is not evidence that a particular Pi can encode a given resolution or frame rate: confirm the capability of your Pi, input and encoding method separately. Reboot and verify the complete stream
- After the service starts successfully, reboot the Pi under the conditions you expect after an outage.
- Check
systemctl status your-stream.serviceto see whether the service launched. If it failed, reviewjournalctl -u your-stream.servicefor the FFmpeg error and check paths, permissions, variables, input availability and network readiness. - Open YouTube’s live controls and confirm that the stream preview arrives and stream health is acceptable. Do not treat an active Linux process as proof that YouTube is receiving video and audio.
- Test with audio and movement similar to the intended stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream health. YouTube recommends testing before going live.
Common startup and stream failures
- The service is not enabled: Starting the unit manually does not make it start on future boots. Enable the correct unit, reload systemd if its file changed, and verify its status.
- The service starts, then FFmpeg exits: Read the unit journal. Check the executable path, FFmpeg arguments, input path or device, access permissions and environment variables.
- The input is missing only after reboot: The camera, mount or other feed may become ready after the service starts. Adjust dependencies and retry behavior for that input, then repeat a real reboot test.
- The service is active but YouTube shows no healthy feed: Check the stream key, destination, FFmpeg output and YouTube preview and stream-health indicators. The service state reports a local process, not successful ingest.
- The stream drops when the network fluctuates: Check upload capacity against total bitrate and preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. A boot-enabled service alone does not guarantee recovery from every network or YouTube failure.
- The stream key may have leaked: Reset it through YouTube’s Live Control Room as an owner or manager, then replace the key used by the Pi’s service.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube loop without keeping a Pi or home connection running, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer can stay off; the same per-slot price applies to any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps, with no re-encode or quality tiers. It automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
