You can run a continuous devotional YouTube stream from an Indian VPS by enabling YouTube Live, preparing rights-cleared video, and sending it to YouTube with FFmpeg over RTMPS. The hard parts are not just keeping FFmpeg running: you also need suitable transfer limits, a recovery plan, and a design that accounts for YouTube’s archive limit.
What you need before starting
This setup broadcasts prerecorded video, not a live camera feed. You need a YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, a VPS you can administer, FFmpeg installed on it, compatible media, and permission to broadcast the recordings and any visuals.
- A YouTube Live server URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
- An Indian VPS whose monthly outbound transfer policy supports continuous streaming. Check fair-use conditions as well as any stated allowance.
- Media with stable video and audio properties, or a test workflow that can successfully encode it.
- A process supervisor, logs, monitoring, and a person or alert path for failures.
Initial YouTube Live activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable it before the planned launch rather than waiting until setup is otherwise complete.
1. Enable YouTube Live and create the broadcast
- In YouTube Studio, open Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. If prompted to enable live streaming, complete that activation and allow for the possibility that it takes up to 24 hours.
- Create or schedule the broadcast. Choose the intended title, description, audience settings, and visibility. Keep the scheduled event and its stream key private until you are ready to publish.
- In the encoder settings, copy the server URL and stream key that YouTube provides. Use the exact server URL and connection details shown for that broadcast; do not substitute a guessed endpoint.
- Store the key in a protected file or secret store accessible only to the account running FFmpeg. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, support post, or unprotected log. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio.
Before sending a full playlist, check YouTube’s incoming preview and stream health with a short test. Confirm that picture and sound are present and that the event is configured as intended.

2. Prepare devotional videos and verify the rights
Make a technically consistent playlist
Choose recordings with compatible frame rates, resolution, codecs, and audio settings. A playlist assembled from files with different properties can produce abrupt changes or fail during concatenation, so test transitions between every pair of items. Listen for silence, clipping, or an unexpected gap at the end of one recording and start of the next.
If you use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer for a playlist, its inputs need compatible stream layouts and encoding parameters for reliable concatenation. Do not assume that a list of unrelated files will behave like one seamless video. If they differ, normalize them to a common format first, then test the resulting playlist on the VPS.
Get permission for the actual recordings
A devotional theme, traditional melody, online availability, or possession of an MP3 file does not by itself grant permission to livestream that particular recording. Rights can apply separately to the composition, sound recording, artwork, and video. Obtain written permission that identifies the material and covers continuous livestream use, intended territories and duration, and monetization if you plan to monetize.
Ask who handles Content ID claims and whether your channel needs to be allowlisted. Keep licences, invoices, permission messages, and contributor or session releases together. Verify the rights for each item in a loop; permission for one recording does not clear the rest of the playlist.

3. Choose an Indian VPS for sustained outbound video
A 24/7 stream sends data for every second it is live. Check the VPS plan’s monthly transfer allowance and fair-use terms alongside CPU, RAM, storage, network route, support, backups, renewal pricing, taxes, and cancellation terms. “Unmetered” is a provider’s description, not proof that a plan permits unlimited continuous outbound streaming; read the conditions and ask the provider if they are unclear.
Estimate transfer before buying
Use the output bitrate, including audio, as a starting point. A rough decimal estimate is bitrate in Mbps × 0.45 = GB per hour; multiply by the hours you expect to stream and then add headroom for protocol overhead and operating uncertainty. For example, 4.5 Mbps works out to about 2.0 GB per hour, or about 1.46 TB over 30 days of uninterrupted transmission by arithmetic. This is an estimate, not a measured VPS result; actual usage depends on the stream and how the provider counts traffic.
Do not select a VPS from a headline price alone. Provider pages may advertise traffic allowances or “unmetered” plans with fair-use conditions, but an advertised allowance does not establish sustained streaming performance on a particular instance. Check the current terms directly before committing.
Match compute to the encoding method
If your source already matches the intended output and FFmpeg can stream-copy it, the CPU demand can differ substantially from real-time transcoding. Re-encoding video uses more CPU. Benchmark the actual input and output workflow on the plan you intend to use rather than treating a generic VPS size as a guarantee. FFmpeg’s protocol support does not prescribe a specific Indian VPS configuration.

4. Set FFmpeg’s output to YouTube’s encoder requirements
Use YouTube’s current encoder recommendations for the selected resolution and frame rate. The required principles are constant bitrate (CBR), H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not let the keyframe interval exceed four seconds. Select a bitrate appropriate to the chosen resolution and frame rate, and leave network headroom rather than saturating the VPS connection.
The command below is a starting pattern for one compatible input that you are intentionally re-encoding. It is not a tested universal command or a bitrate recommendation. Set the bitrate variables to values appropriate for your chosen output and the current YouTube guidance, and test with representative motion and audio.

-f flv "$OUTPUT"In this example, FPS is 30 and the GOP setting calculates a two-second keyframe interval. Change the frame rate and corresponding GOP value together if your output profile differs. The example’s video bitrate is illustrative only: choose one that fits the selected resolution and frame rate, then confirm the incoming preview and health status. The command uses H.264 and AAC and loops one file; it does not establish that every input is compatible or that every FFmpeg build has the same encoders.
For media that already has the required codecs and parameters, stream-copying may reduce CPU use, but only use it after verifying the source’s codecs, frame rate, keyframes, and audio against the intended output. Stream-copying cannot correct an incompatible source. Test the exact command with the exact files and installed FFmpeg build before relying on it.

5. Connect over RTMPS and protect the key
Prefer RTMPS when YouTube provides it and your FFmpeg build supports it. RTMPS carries an RTMP stream through an SSL-protected connection; use the exact RTMPS endpoint and path supplied by YouTube, over port 443. Do not assume that changing rtmp:// to rtmps:// is sufficient if the endpoint or path is wrong.
The example builds an output address from the server URL and key, but follow the exact format shown in Live Control Room for your broadcast. Treat the combined output as a secret: command-line arguments may be visible to users with access to the VPS. Restrict shell and administrative access, keep scripts and environment files private, and avoid printing the output address in logs.

Run FFmpeg under a service manager or process supervisor configured to restart it after a process failure. Keep useful error logs and alert a human when FFmpeg exits or YouTube stops receiving healthy, decodable video. A restart policy alone is not a guarantee: FFmpeg can remain alive while sending unusable media, or repeatedly restart without restoring a valid stream.
Monitor both the VPS process and YouTube’s preview or stream health. Make a sustained pre-launch test using the intended media and settings. Confirm that a disconnect is detected, that a restart reconnects successfully, and that an alert reaches someone able to act. Recovery behavior depends on the supervisor, FFmpeg build, network, and YouTube’s ingestion state; no generic command guarantees a 24/7 connection.

7. Plan for YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not design around the assumption that a single uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast will produce one complete automatic archive. Decide how scheduled restarts, separate broadcasts, archive continuity, and the live watch page should work, then test the effects on the channel before launch. A restart can affect the viewing experience and the way broadcasts are represented; the archive behavior does not promise a seamless single recording.
Troubleshooting common failures

Cost and ongoing responsibilities
For a self-managed VPS, the bill is only one part of the cost: account for the plan’s transfer terms, possible transcoding resources, storage, taxes, renewal price, and the time needed to monitor failures and rights issues. A lower encoded bitrate reduces the transfer estimate proportionally, but the resulting picture quality must still suit the content and YouTube’s current recommendations.
Neither an always-on process nor a successful connection makes a channel eligible for monetization automatically. Do not assume a devotional playlist qualifies because it is continuous or because the songs are familiar. Check current YouTube monetization and reused-content policies for your channel and the actual material, and confirm rights with the relevant owners.
