You can run OBS on a cloud-hosted computer and send its output to YouTube, but keeping a stream live 24/7 takes more than installing OBS: you must validate the VM against your actual encoding workload, make the stream key secure, monitor the ingest connection, plan recovery, and handle YouTube’s archive limit. This guide walks through the do-it-yourself setup and its limits, then covers a cloud service alternative for looping uploaded videos.
What you need before setting up cloud-hosted OBS
Prepare a cloud VM that you can access remotely, OBS Studio, the video and audio sources for your scenes, and a YouTube channel with live streaming available. You will also need the stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. Keep the key private: YouTube describes stream keys as a stream’s “password and address.” If someone else gets it, reset it in Live Control Room and replace it in OBS. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.
Do not choose a VM based only on a generic minimum system requirement. The load depends on the encoder, output resolution and frame rate, and scene complexity. OBS’s system requirements explain that compatible hardware is not necessarily capable of every workload. Test the exact VM, OBS scenes, and output profile you intend to use; the available platform guidance does not establish a universally reliable VM size or GPU configuration.
Create or select a YouTube live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
- Create a stream or select an existing one, then copy its stream URL and stream key.
- Check the stream’s settings for auto-start and auto-stop. These controls can let the encoder initiate or end a broadcast when enabled; do not assume they are enabled.
- Store the key securely. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement.
YouTube supports reusing stream settings, including custom stream keys. Its settings guide explains how the key and stream behavior work.

Connect OBS to YouTube from the cloud VM
- Install and launch OBS Studio on the VM, then create or open the scene collection you plan to use.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream.
- Choose YouTube as the service if it is available, then enter the stream key. If you use a custom destination, enter the server URL provided by YouTube together with the matching key.
- Apply the settings and return to the main OBS window. Confirm that your scenes contain the intended video and audio sources.
The OBS overview guide covers the service, server, and key fields and recommends testing scenes and settings before broadcasting.
Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
Choose the output resolution and frame rate together with a bitrate appropriate to the codec. YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval. For H.264 ingest, the current table recommends 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 6 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. Those figures apply to those exact modes; consult YouTube’s table for the specific codec, resolution, and frame rate you choose rather than extrapolating from one row.

- 5-in-1 Connectivity: Equipped with a 4K HDMI port, a 5 Gbps USB-C data port, two 5 Gbps USB-A ports, and a USB C 100W PD-IN port. Note: The USB C 100W PD-IN port supports only charging and does not support data transfer devices such as headphones or speakers.
- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Use RTMPS for standard RTMP-family ingest. YouTube says Live Control Room detects encoder settings and transcodes the incoming source to multiple playback formats. Review YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution table before setting OBS output.
Once you have selected the profile, verify that the cloud VM can sustain it with your real scenes. A static image scene and a complex animated scene can impose different encoding demands, so a brief test with a blank scene is not enough to establish that the final configuration will hold up.

Test the stream before leaving it unattended
- Start OBS’s stream output and check Live Control Room for an incoming preview and a healthy connection indication.
- Play moving video and listen to the audio in the preview. Check for missing sources, silent or distorted audio, stutter, and sync problems.
- Leave the test running long enough to observe whether the VM and connection remain stable under the intended workload.
- If you have a backup encoder, test failover deliberately rather than assuming it will take over correctly.
YouTube recommends configuring encoders in advance and testing backup-encoder failover when redundancy is part of the setup. OBS also advises testing scenes and settings. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and the OBS overview guide.
Keep a 24/7 stream running—and know the failure points
A cloud VM removes the need to keep a home computer powered on, but it does not by itself guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. The VM, OBS process, and network path to YouTube all need to remain healthy. Decide how you will notice a failure and restart or recover the session, and test that process before relying on the stream.

Dropped frames or unstable stream health
OBS identifies an unstable connection to the ingest server or a bitrate above the connection’s stable upload capacity as common causes of dropped frames. Reduce bitrate if the path cannot sustain it, then investigate network instability. The encoder cannot control every network condition. Follow the steps in OBS stream connection troubleshooting.
Stream does not start or YouTube receives no picture
- Check that OBS has the correct YouTube service or the exact server URL and matching key.
- Confirm the stream key has not been reset or exposed; if it has, replace the key in OBS.
- Check that the intended OBS scene is active and its sources are visible.
- Review auto-start and auto-stop settings in YouTube Studio if you expect the encoder to start or end the broadcast automatically.
OBS runs, but the cloud VM cannot sustain the output
Recheck the actual output resolution, frame rate, encoder, and scene complexity. Reduce the workload or test a different VM configuration; no particular instance size is established as reliable for all OBS streams. Re-test using the actual scene and a sustained run, not just a successful launch.

YouTube’s archive is incomplete or missing
YouTube can automatically archive streams shorter than 12 hours. A stream that exceeds 12 hours may not be captured at all, so do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 broadcast to produce a complete YouTube archive. If preserving the full program matters, arrange and test a separate recording or retention method in the actual hosting setup. See YouTube’s archive guidance.

If the goal is to keep uploaded videos looping as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is an alternative to operating OBS on a VM. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded videos from its cloud service. Nothing at home has to stay on. It supports the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo for details, or start the free first day.
Cost and design trade-offs
A cloud-hosted OBS setup shifts the always-on workload from your own computer to rented compute, but its total cost depends on the VM configuration and the time it runs; no provider prices or configurations are established here. Compare the ongoing compute cost with the amount of encoding work, network stability, recovery behavior, remote access you need, and your separate recording and storage plan. For a continuous stream, include the cost and operational effort of monitoring and restoring OBS—not only the initial VM setup.
