To stream with FFmpeg’s VAAPI H.264 encoder, select an accessible Linux VAAPI device, upload software-decoded frames to its hardware surfaces when needed, and send a YouTube-compatible H.264 stream over RTMPS. The exact device, pixel format, and rate-control options depend on your FFmpeg build, GPU, driver, and input; treat the command below as a template to adapt and test, not a universal recipe.
What you need before starting
- A Linux VAAPI stack and a device node your user can access.
- An FFmpeg build that includes the
h264_vaapiencoder. - An input source and frame format your filters and hardware can handle.
- A stable upload connection with spare bandwidth for the chosen video and audio bitrates.
- A YouTube channel enabled for live streaming and a private stream key. Do not publish or share the key.
Check the installed build rather than assuming that a GPU model or distribution provides a particular encoder configuration. FFmpeg’s VAAPI encoder documentation describes the encoder requirements and controls; its command-line documentation covers hardware-device selection.
Find the VAAPI encoder and device
Confirm FFmpeg includes H.264 VAAPI
Run ffmpeg -encoders and look for h264_vaapi. If it is absent, this FFmpeg build cannot use that encoder; install or build a version with VAAPI support appropriate to your system, then check again.
Select an accessible render node
Linux systems commonly expose VAAPI through DRM render nodes under /dev/dri/. FFmpeg gives /dev/dri/renderD128 as an example path, not a guarantee. List the available nodes with ls -l /dev/dri/, then choose the one supported by your driver and accessible to the account that runs FFmpeg. Node numbering and permissions vary by machine.

Device selection and frame upload solve different problems: selecting a device tells FFmpeg which VAAPI device to use; hwupload moves software frames into hardware surfaces for the encoder.
Understand the frame path
h264_vaapi accepts VAAPI hardware surfaces. If your input decoder produces software frames, FFmpeg’s documentation says to use the hwupload filter. A format conversion may also be required before upload, but the correct format depends on the input, GPU, and driver. Do not assume an old recipe’s nv12 conversion works everywhere.
Inspect the input with ffprobe, check the local encoder’s supported options with ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_vaapi, and test the filter chain against your actual source. For a camera, capture device, or other live source, input options such as device selection and capture format are specific to that source; put them before the relevant input in the FFmpeg command.

Choose YouTube-compatible video settings
YouTube Live currently lists RTMP/RTMPS delivery and H.264, H.265, and AV1 encoder settings. This guide uses H.264 because it is the common VAAPI path; availability of YouTube’s other codecs depends on the exact hardware and driver. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery, progressive video, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and CBR. Its advanced guidance also includes two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, square pixels, Rec. 709 for SDR, 8-bit SDR, and AAC or MP3 audio. Confirm which controls your VAAPI encoder supports rather than assuming every platform parameter maps to an available option.

| 1080p60 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 10 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
These are the current recommendations on YouTube’s live encoder settings page; the page does not state a publication year. They are starting points, not a guarantee that your connection can sustain a stream. YouTube recommends keeping 20% of upload bandwidth available, as described in its live streaming network guidance. If you cannot maintain the target with that headroom, lower the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate.
Adapt this FFmpeg command template
Replace every bracketed value with a setting that matches your machine, input, and YouTube Live Control Room. This example assumes software frames that need uploading and uses a 1080p30 H.264 target; adjust the scale, frame rate, and bitrate together for a different profile. Check that the encoder accepts the selected pixel format and CBR options on your system.

ffmpeg -re -i "[INPUT]"
-vf "scale=1920:1080,fps=30,format=nv12,hwupload"
-vaapi_device /dev/dri/renderD128
-c:v h264_vaapi -profile:v high
-b:v 10M -maxrate 10M -bufsize 20M -g 60
-c:a aac -b:a 160k -ar 48000
-f flv "[RTMPS_INGEST_URL]/[PRIVATE_STREAM_KEY]"
This is illustrative, not a tested universal command. In particular, format=nv12, -profile:v high, and the CBR-related options may not be supported in that combination by your hardware and driver. Consult ffmpeg -h encoder=h264_vaapi and test locally. If the input already supplies compatible VAAPI hardware frames, the upload filter may not be needed; the graph must match the actual frame path.
-g 60 requests a 60-frame GOP, which corresponds to two seconds at 30 fps. For a different frame rate, set the GOP to approximately two seconds of frames where the encoder supports it. The -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize options express rate and buffering targets, but their behavior depends on VAAPI implementation. FFmpeg documents rate-control modes including CBR, VBR, and quality-oriented modes; confirm the supported mode locally and configure CBR where available rather than assuming these flags force identical behavior on every driver.

Test privately and watch stream health
- In YouTube Live Control Room, configure a test stream and use a private or unlisted broadcast so you can inspect the result without publishing it to viewers.
- Start FFmpeg with representative motion and the audio you intend to send. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”
- Check the preview for image, motion, and sound, then review YouTube’s stream-health messages. Confirm the resolution and frame rate match your intended settings.
- During the event, keep an eye on FFmpeg output and YouTube stream health. A clean encoder log alone does not prove that the upload path or ingest is healthy.
Troubleshoot common VAAPI and YouTube problems
Unknown encoder 'h264_vaapi' or encoder not listed
The installed FFmpeg build may lack the encoder. Check ffmpeg -encoders and use a build with VAAPI support for your platform. A GPU being present does not by itself establish that this particular FFmpeg binary contains the wrapper.
VAAPI device cannot be opened
Verify the selected render node exists and that the FFmpeg process has access to it. Check ls -l /dev/dri/, confirm the path is the node intended for your driver, and resolve local device permissions before retrying. Do not assume renderD128 is present on every host.
Encoder rejects frames or reports a hardware-surface error
The encoder may be receiving software frames. Add an appropriate hwupload step, and check whether a format conversion is needed before the upload. The required conversion depends on the input and device; validate the actual filter chain rather than copying a fixed format from another setup.

Unsupported format, profile, or filter
Inspect the encoder help and FFmpeg error output. Remove or change options the selected VAAPI implementation does not support, and verify that the input pixel format can reach a format accepted by the hardware. Test one change at a time so you can identify whether the failure is in scaling, frame-rate conversion, upload, or encoding.
Requested CBR or bitrate behavior is unavailable
VAAPI rate-control capabilities vary with hardware and driver. Check encoder help and local capabilities, select a supported CBR mode if available, and test whether YouTube reports a stable stream at the chosen target. Do not infer that a command-line bitrate flag guarantees a specific rate-control mode on every device.
YouTube reports poor stream health or the stream drops frames
Compare the selected bitrate with the actual sustained upload capacity, leaving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the link cannot sustain the target; also check competing traffic and network instability. Re-test with representative movement and audio, then monitor the health messages during the live event.
