For a DIY, low-power YouTube stream, start with a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, its recommended 5 V/3 A USB-C power supply, microSD boot storage and wired Ethernet where practical. It is a sensible fit for a modest H.264 stream when the workflow can use the Pi 4’s hardware encoder. If your video is already encoded, try to pass it through without encoding it again. A Raspberry Pi 5 is another option, but it encodes H.264 in software and needs more attention to sustained workload, cooling and power.
A Pi can be part of a 24/7 setup, but board specifications alone cannot establish the assembled system’s wall power use or reliability. Measure the complete build, including peripherals, and test what happens after a network or power interruption before relying on it unattended.
Which Raspberry Pi is best for a 24/7 YouTube stream?
The Raspberry Pi 4 Model B is the best starting point when your stream needs live H.264 encoding and the chosen capture pipeline can use its hardware encoder. Raspberry Pi’s rpicam-vid documentation says its libav backend uses hardware H.264 encoding when available.
The Raspberry Pi 5 is a capable alternative, not an automatic upgrade for this job. It has no hardware H.264 encoder; Raspberry Pi’s 2026 performance paper reports real-time 1080p30 software encoding under the paper’s tested settings. Results depend on the preset, bitrate and other workload, so validate your intended settings during a sustained test.

| Model | Encoding path | When it makes sense | Considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Raspberry Pi 4 Model B | Hardware H.264 is available in supported camera/libav workflows. | A modest live H.264 stream where low CPU use is a priority. | Choose conservative resolution and frame rate. Bare-board power figures do not describe the complete streaming setup. |
| Raspberry Pi 5 | Software H.264; Raspberry Pi’s 2026 paper tested real-time 1080p30 under its specified settings. | A newer platform or additional CPU capacity, if your selected encode settings pass sustained testing. | Encoding uses CPU resources; match the power supply and cooling to the build and workload. |
Compare the boards using your actual source workflow, output settings, measured wall energy, backup needs and peripheral load—not just the encoder headline.
Decide whether you need to encode the video
Live camera or scene
A live camera or generated scene needs to be captured and encoded before it can be sent to YouTube. On a Pi 4, use a supported pipeline that can use hardware H.264 encoding. With a Pi 5, software encoding is the path; test CPU load and temperature at your target resolution and frame rate.

Pre-encoded video loop
If the source is already encoded in a format YouTube accepts, avoid decoding and encoding it again when the software and stream path allow it. A stream-copy or remux workflow can reduce the Pi’s processing work, but compatibility still depends on the source format and the output configuration. Confirm that the stream reaches YouTube cleanly before leaving it unattended.
Build the DIY setup
- Choose the board. Use a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B as the default for a modest live H.264 pipeline that supports its hardware encoder. Consider a Pi 5 if you need its platform or CPU capacity and have validated software encoding at your intended settings.
- Connect the model-matched power supply. Raspberry Pi recommends a 5 V, 3 A (15 W) USB-C supply for Pi 4. For Pi 5, the official 27 W USB-C supply is recommended; Raspberry Pi’s documentation describes 5 V at 5 A for full peripheral capability. Raspberry Pi says, “We recommend using an official Raspberry Pi power supply.” Allow for cable voltage loss and power drawn by attached devices.
- Prepare boot storage. A microSD card is a common choice; USB storage is also supported. The board does not include onboard storage. Use a lean Raspberry Pi OS/Linux installation and confirm it boots reliably before adding the stream workload.
- Set up a stable network path. Prefer wired Ethernet for a fixed installation when practical. Your available upstream bandwidth must exceed the configured stream bitrate with enough headroom for ordinary variation. Measure and test the connection where the Pi will run; there is no single India-wide ISP performance assumption that applies to every location.
- Choose the capture and streaming pipeline. Use a suitable camera pipeline or FFmpeg/libav workflow. Raspberry Pi’s camera software documentation describes using rpicam-vid with libav to save or stream media. For an existing encoded video, investigate stream copy/remux before choosing a workflow that re-encodes it.
- Set YouTube’s ingest parameters. Use H.264, constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube says the interval should not exceed four seconds. Its recommended H.264 examples are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 3 Mbps for 720p30. YouTube recommends RTMPS, the secure extension to RTMP. These are platform ingest recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular Pi, pipeline or connection can sustain them. Begin modestly and verify the result.
- Configure unattended operation. Arrange for the streaming process to start with the system and be supervised so it can restart after a process failure. Rehearse recovery from a process exit, network interruption and power interruption. A restart policy does not itself prove that the stream resumed correctly on YouTube.
- Run a sustained test before relying on it. Check YouTube’s stream health, dropped frames, Pi CPU load and temperature, network stability and the assembled system’s wall power. Test the same content and settings you intend to run continuously.
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and use its stream key in the encoder configuration. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, include it in screenshots or commit it to a public script repository. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder with the new key. YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance covers its current ingest recommendations.

Choose resolution and bitrate that the whole setup can sustain
Start with the output your content and connection can reliably support. YouTube lists 3 Mbps as its recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p30 and 5 Mbps for 1080p30. A higher resolution is not automatically better if the encoder cannot hold its frame rate or the upstream connection fluctuates. Treat the listed values as starting points for YouTube ingestion, then check stream health and dropped frames in a real test.
- Lower resolution or bitrate if: dropped frames rise, the upstream connection is unstable, or the encoder struggles to keep pace.
- Check encoding load if: CPU use or temperature remains high during a sustained live encode, especially on a Pi 5 using software H.264.
- Keep keyframes predictable: use the two-second interval YouTube recommends and do not exceed four seconds.
- Do not confuse ingest settings with a viewer guarantee: these settings do not establish the quality viewers will receive or prove your particular network can maintain the feed.
Estimate power use and electricity cost in India
Measure the complete streaming setup at the wall; do not treat a bare-board current figure as the consumption of the running system. Raspberry Pi’s hardware table lists 600 mA as typical active current for a Pi 4 Model B bare board, notes the figures are approximate and warns that USB devices or HATs add load. It is a reference point, not a measurement of a Pi 4, power supply, storage and network accessories working together.

- Measure the average watts of the assembled setup with a wall power meter while it is streaming in its intended configuration.
- Estimate monthly energy: average watts × 24 × 30 ÷ 1,000 = kWh per 30-day month.
- Multiply the kWh result by the electricity tariff that applies to your home and usage slab.
Indian electricity tariffs vary by state, distribution company and slab, so there is no single defensible monthly rupee amount for every reader. Include any router, modem or other equipment in the measurement if it must also stay powered for the stream to continue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Plan for outages instead of assuming 24/7 reliability
A stream can stop because of a power cut, a network drop, a process failure or an interruption on the YouTube side. Use a UPS only after deciding how long you need the Pi and network equipment to remain powered. Measure the system at the wall, include the router or modem if it needs backup, and size the UPS for the required runtime while accounting for its efficiency. UPS capacity and runtime depend on the equipment and conditions; the board’s published power specifications do not establish either.

Before calling a setup dependable, test recovery by deliberately interrupting the network and power, then confirm that the Pi restarts, the streaming process reconnects and YouTube receives the feed again. A watchdog or process supervisor can help restart local software, but it cannot guarantee that YouTube accepts the resumed stream or that an outage will be invisible to viewers.
Keep the stream within YouTube’s rules
Using a looping file does not give you rights to its music, video or other material. Use content you own, have licensed for this use, or are otherwise permitted to stream. Review YouTube’s copyright and live-stream policies before starting a long-running broadcast. Repeated or reused content may also affect a channel’s eligibility for monetization; continuous uptime is not a substitute for meeting YouTube’s channel and content requirements. For a practical preflight, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is an always-on YouTube loop rather than experimenting with a Pi, StreamNeo keeps uploaded videos live from the cloud. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed, and the stream is for YouTube.
- Nothing has to stay on at home: the stream runs in the cloud, not on your Pi or computer.
- Each slot streams what you upload at its original quality, up to 4K 60fps, for one flat price per slot; there are no quality tiers or re-encoding.
- StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream.
