The models below are verified by their manufacturers, but the published specifications do not establish a universal sound-quality winner.
How to choose a dynamic microphone for streaming
Start with the connection
- USB: Connects directly to a computer and avoids the need for an audio interface as a connection bridge. The Audio-Technica AT2040USB is a USB example.
- XLR: Requires an XLR cable and an audio interface or mixer to connect to a computer. The Shure MV7X, Shure SM7B, Elgato Wave DX, and RØDE PodMic are XLR models.
- USB and XLR: Offers a direct USB route or an XLR route through an interface. RØDE PodMic USB and Shure MV7 document both connection paths.
Then check the details that affect your setup
- Pickup pattern: Cardioid and hypercardioid are different stated patterns. A dynamic transducer or a particular pattern does not, by itself, guarantee that room noise will disappear.
- Output and sensitivity: Manufacturers publish measurements in different units and conditions. They are useful specifications, not a controlled comparison of how loud or good each mic will sound through your equipment.
- Monitoring and controls: Check whether the model documents headphone monitoring, mix controls, or other onboard options if you need them.
- Accessories: Confirm whether your setup also needs an interface, cable, stand or boom arm, thread adapter, or pop protection.
Dynamic microphones for streaming: verified differences
This comparison covers the manufacturer-documented details available for each model. It does not rank sound quality: the manufacturers’ pages and specifications do not provide a controlled, same-room comparison across these microphones.
| Model | Connection and pattern | Documented specifications or controls | Setup and included-item notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RØDE PodMic USB | USB and XLR; dynamic, cardioid, end-address | 20 Hz–20 kHz; XLR output impedance 460 Ω; sensitivity −57 dB re 1 V/Pa | Provides both a direct USB route and an XLR route through an interface or mixer. RØDE describes it for streaming, gaming, podcasting, voice-overs, and speech content. |
| Shure MV7 | Micro-B USB and passive XLR; dynamic, cardioid | Shure’s guide documents connection to a computer by USB and to a mixer or stage box by XLR. Numeric specifications are not stated here. | Some stands may require an adapter; Shure says an adapter is not provided. |
| Audio-Technica AT2040USB | USB-C; dynamic, hypercardioid | Headphone monitoring, mix control, and low-cut control are documented. Numeric sensitivity and frequency-response figures are not stated here. | Datasheet lists a mounting clamp and USB cable. |
| Shure MV7X | XLR; dynamic, cardioid | 50 Hz–16 kHz; 252 Ω at 1 kHz; sensitivity −55 dBV/Pa (Shure specification sheet, 2021) | Includes a windscreen. Shure lists replacement grille and windscreen parts; that listing does not establish current stock. |
| Shure SM7B | XLR; dynamic, cardioid | 50 Hz–20 kHz; 150 Ω; output level −59.0 dB (1.12 mV) at 1 kHz (Shure specification sheet, 2023) | The stated output level is a setup specification, not evidence of a particular preamp requirement or a tested gain result. |
| Elgato Wave DX | XLR; dynamic, cardioid | 50–15,000 Hz; sensitivity 2.5 mV/Pa (−52 dBV/Pa); 600 Ω | Requires an XLR interface, XLR cable, and stand or boom arm; they are not included. Includes 3/8-inch and 1/4-inch thread adapters with its 5/8-inch mount. Elgato names Wave XLR products as compatible interfaces. |
| RØDE PodMic | XLR; dynamic, cardioid | 50 Hz–15 kHz; 320 Ω; sensitivity −57 dBV (1.4 mV @ 94 dB SPL) | For computer use, RØDE specifies a standard 3-pin XLR cable and audio interface. Its built-in pop filter means a separate windshield is not needed, according to RØDE. |
Which type fits your streaming setup?
Choose USB for a simpler computer connection
A USB microphone is a practical fit if you want to connect directly to a computer rather than build an XLR chain. The AT2040USB also documents headphone monitoring, mix control, and low-cut control. If you want a choice between USB and XLR, the PodMic USB and MV7 are the documented dual-path options in this comparison.
Choose XLR if you have an interface or mixer
An XLR mic adds components to the setup: at minimum, an XLR cable and an audio interface or mixer that can connect to your computer. That is true for the PodMic and Wave DX, and the MV7X and SM7B are also XLR models. Wave DX’s interface, cable, and stand or boom arm are explicitly not included.

#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Do not choose by sensitivity numbers alone
The values in the table are not a shared test. For example, the Wave DX sensitivity is given in mV/Pa and dBV/Pa, while the PodMic USB specification uses dB relative to 1 V/Pa; the SM7B figure is an output level at 1 kHz. Different units and measurement descriptions cannot support a simple sound-quality ranking. The documents also do not establish gain needs across different interfaces.
What else might you need to buy?
- For an XLR mic: Budget for an XLR cable and an interface or mixer if you do not already own them. USB-only connection does not need this bridge.
- For mounting: Check the mic’s mount and your stand or boom arm before buying. Wave DX includes specified thread adapters; Shure says some MV7 stands may require an adapter that is not provided.
- For pop protection: PodMic has a built-in pop filter, and MV7X documentation specifies a windscreen. Check the selected model’s current package details before adding a separate accessory.
- For a dynamic microphone for streaming: Treat retailer price, availability, and exact box contents as separate checks. They are not established by the manufacturer specifications compared here.
How do I connect an XLR microphone to my computer?
- Place the mic on a compatible stand or boom arm and connect it to an audio interface or mixer with the appropriate XLR cable.
- Connect the interface or mixer to the computer using its computer connection, then select that device as the input in your streaming or recording software.
- Speak at your normal streaming distance and adjust the interface’s input level while checking the software’s input meter. Avoid setting a level that clips; the exact control labels and appropriate gain depend on your interface and software.
- For an MV7 or PodMic USB, use USB for the direct computer path or XLR for the interface path, as documented by the manufacturers.
Or let it run in the cloud
