To use a green screen in OBS Studio, add your webcam as a Video Capture Source, then apply the Chroma Key filter to that source. Position a green backdrop so it fills the area behind you, check the camera image, and adjust the filter in OBS’s preview until the background is removed without cutting into your outline. If you do not have a physical screen, NVIDIA Broadcast offers background removal for compatible Windows systems.
What you need for an OBS green-screen setup
- A webcam or camera that OBS can use as a Video Capture Source.
- A green screen backdrop positioned behind you and framed to cover the visible background.
- OBS Studio, where you will apply a Chroma Key filter to the camera source.
- Lighting that gives the webcam a usable image. Lighting affects webcam image quality; Logitech highlights its importance, particularly for a 720p/60fps stream, but there is no universal lighting layout or screen distance established for every room and camera.
A collapsible chroma-key screen can suit a room where a backdrop needs to be stored between streams. A separate stand or mounting hardware is only necessary if your screen and room lack a suitable way to position it. Choose based on your available space, camera framing, and whether the screen can be mounted or folded away; available sources do not compare particular screen materials, products, or dimensions.
Set up the physical screen and camera
- Place the green screen in the camera’s background. Frame the shot so the backdrop covers the area you want OBS to remove. There is no single camera-to-screen distance that works for all setups, so use the camera preview to check the framing.
- Look at the webcam image before applying the key. Adjust your room lighting or camera position if the image is difficult to see clearly. The lighting guidance supports checking the actual image, not following a fixed light placement recipe.
- In OBS, add your camera as a Video Capture Source. OBS lets you position and resize this source in the scene.
Remove the green screen with OBS Chroma Key
- Select the webcam’s Video Capture Source in OBS and open its Filters.
- Add the Chroma Key filter. OBS describes this filter as removing occurrences of a selected color and identifies it for green-screen use.
- Inspect the scene preview. Choose the key color type—green is the default—and refine the available controls while watching both the background and the edges around your subject.
- Check the full composed scene before going live. Look for green areas left behind and for parts of your subject that may have been removed.
What the filter controls do
- Similarity: Sets how aggressively OBS removes colors close to the key color. Raising it can remove more of the background, but can also remove pixels you meant to keep.
- Smoothness: Changes how soft the edges of removed areas appear.
- Key Color Spill Reduction: Targets residual key color around the subject’s edges.
- Opacity: Controls opacity in the keyed result.
- Contrast and brightness: Adjust the image characteristics used by the filter.
There are no universal values for these controls: the useful setting depends on the camera image and the scene in front of it. Make changes in the preview rather than treating a number from another setup as a guaranteed setting.
Use NVIDIA Broadcast instead of a physical green screen
NVIDIA Broadcast can remove, replace, or blur a background through a virtual camera workflow. Unlike OBS Chroma Key, which keys out a color from a physical backdrop, Broadcast supplies the background effect through its virtual camera.

NVIDIA’s product page lists these requirements: Windows 10 64-bit; a GeForce RTX 2060, Quadro RTX 3000, TITAN RTX, or higher GPU; at least 8 GB of RAM; and an Intel Core i5 8600 or AMD Ryzen 5 2600 or higher processor as recommended. The page also specifies NVIDIA driver families. Requirements can change, so check NVIDIA’s current product and setup documentation before installing Broadcast or buying hardware.
- Install and set up NVIDIA Broadcast on a compatible system, then choose its background removal, replacement, or blur effect.
- In OBS, add a Video Capture Source and select the NVIDIA Broadcast camera as the device.
- Review the result in OBS’s scene preview before going live.
Choose the approach that fits your setup

Common problems and what to check
- Green remains in the frame: Confirm that the backdrop fills the camera’s background, then adjust similarity while watching the preview.
- Parts of your subject disappear: Similarity may be removing colors you intended to keep. Reduce it and inspect the subject’s outline again.
- The subject’s edges look too soft: Review smoothness and refine it in the preview.
- Green tint remains around the subject: Adjust Key Color Spill Reduction and check the edge in the composed scene.
- The image is hard to key consistently: Check the webcam image and lighting. Lighting affects image quality, but the available guidance does not establish a universal lighting arrangement.
- NVIDIA Broadcast is unavailable or will not work: Check its current operating-system, GPU, memory, processor, and driver requirements. The virtual camera workflow depends on a compatible system.
