How to Troubleshoot Stream Alerts in OBS and Streamlabs

Find out whether an alert problem is with the provider or your streaming software, then fix missing visuals, silent alerts, missed events, or echoes.

If a stream alert is missing, first test it in the alert provider’s dashboard. That separates a provider or event problem from an OBS or streaming-software problem: if the test fails, check the provider and its settings; if it succeeds, check the alert source, scene, visibility, and audio routing in your streaming software.

How stream alerts work—and where to troubleshoot

OBS Studio does not provide alerts itself. An alert provider generates the event and supplies an overlay; streaming software displays that overlay, commonly through a Browser Source. OBS describes this arrangement in its stream-alerts FAQ.

This gives you two places to investigate: the provider (event setup, account connection, filters and moderation) and the streaming application (source, scene, visibility and audio). Test at the provider first so you know which side to focus on.

Choose the right source setup

Streaming setup Where to configure the alert How to add it Where to check audio
Streamlabs Desktop Streamlabs alert settings Add an Alert Box source Check the alert source and the application’s audio settings
Streamlabs plugin for OBS Streamlabs alert settings Use the plugin’s source path described in Streamlabs’ setup guide Check the alert source and OBS audio settings
OBS or another streaming application with a provider widget URL Alert provider’s dashboard Paste the widget URL into a Browser Source Check the Browser Source’s audio options and the application’s audio routing

Exact menus can differ by application and version. Streamlabs documents the setup paths and testing process in its quick guide; OBS also explains alerts and layout in its alerts and chat box tutorial.

Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Start with a provider test

  1. Open your alert provider’s dashboard and select a test for the event you want to check.
  2. Save any provider-side changes before leaving the settings page.
  3. In your streaming software, confirm the alert source is enabled and belongs to the scene you are testing.
  4. Trigger the test again and watch the stream preview. If it appears, follow the audio checks below if necessary. If it does not, work through the visual checks.

If the alert test does not appear on screen

  • Check the scene and source visibility. Confirm the source is enabled and present in the active scene. In the scene’s source list, move the alert above sources that may cover it; a source behind an opaque image or capture can be running but invisible.
  • Refresh the browser-based widget. If the source appears stale, remove and re-add it using the appropriate setup path for your software. Streamlabs includes refreshing or recreating a widget source among its troubleshooting steps.
  • Try changing browser hardware acceleration. In your streaming application’s advanced settings, toggle browser hardware acceleration and restart the application before testing again. The setting’s label or location may vary by version.
  • Review provider settings and custom code. Check the alert’s visual settings and any custom HTML or CSS. Custom code can affect whether an alert displays.

Streamlabs’ alerts and widget troubleshooting guide covers source layering, browser-source issues and other visual checks.

If the alert appears but has no sound

  1. Check the provider’s recent events or alert controls to make sure the alert is not muted.
  2. Inspect the alert source’s audio options. Where applicable, enable “Route Audio to OBS.”
  3. In OBS, review Settings > Audio > Advanced for the monitoring device and audio monitoring behavior. The right choice depends on whether you want to hear the alert locally and which device you use.
  4. Check that the alert is assigned to the audio tracks you intend to send to your stream or recording. A sound may play locally but be absent from the stream mix if the track assignment is wrong.
  5. Send another test alert and verify both local monitoring and the stream or recording mix. This distinguishes a monitoring issue from a missing stream audio track.

Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide also recommends checking mute state, routing and monitoring rather than assuming the sound file itself is at fault.

If tests work but real events are missing

  • Confirm the event type and account. Make sure the relevant event is enabled and configured for the correct platform and connected account.
  • Review moderation and filters. Profanity or custom-word filters may suppress an event. An unlimited moderation delay may require you to accept an alert manually before it plays.
  • Check the event’s privacy limits. Streamlabs notes that some subscribers’ privacy settings can prevent an alert from appearing because of API limitations; this may not be fixable from OBS.
  • Reconnect the account if needed. If the provider may have lost its platform connection, relink the account in the provider’s settings and test again.

These provider-side cases are covered in Streamlabs’ troubleshooting guide.

If alerts repeat or echo

  1. Close any extra alert pop-out windows. Multiple running instances can play the same event more than once.
  2. In OBS, open the relevant Browser Source properties and enable Shutdown when not active. Check alert sources in other scenes as well; a browser source that keeps running in an inactive scene can contribute to duplicate playback.
  3. If the echo persists, remove and recreate the source, then test again.

Streamlabs documents these checks in How to Fix Alert Echoing.

Last checks for intermittent or persistent failures

After isolating the provider, source and audio path, Streamlabs lists cache clearing, firewall or antivirus permissions, IPv6 issues and an incorrect system date or time as further possibilities. Make one change at a time and follow the current instructions for your operating system, security software and network; do not guess at firewall or network settings. Its troubleshooting guide describes these later checks.
