Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor a simple looped-video YouTube stream, FFmpeg is the more practical starting point: its documentation describes RTMP/RTMPS publishing, and a public example shows a headless loop managed by systemd. Choose GStreamer when you need to assemble a more explicitly composable media pipeline. Neither is proven to deliver better uptime, and there is no India-specific performance comparison in the available evidence.
For either choice, 24/7 operation depends on more than the encoder: test the complete stream, measure the sustained connection from the actual host to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, monitor YouTube’s stream health, and plan for process and network failures.
FFmpeg or GStreamer: which should you choose?
| Factor | FFmpeg | GStreamer |
|---|---|---|
| Simple looped-file stream | Practical baseline: its official manual documents RTMP publishing, and a public Ubuntu VPS example describes a loop managed by systemd. | Can be built as a media pipeline, but the cited official sink documentation is not a complete YouTube setup guide. |
| Pipeline design | Useful for a direct encode-and-publish workflow; verify the command and installed build against your input and output needs. | Useful when you want to assemble and connect distinct media-processing elements. |
| YouTube output evidence | Official protocol documentation covers RTMP and RTMPS publishing. It does not establish that every package build behaves identically. | The official rtmpsink page documents RTMP output through librtmp. It does not establish YouTube RTMPS TLS and SNI compatibility in every build. |
| Proven 24/7 reliability | Not established. | Not established. |
The recommendation is about workflow evidence, not a controlled reliability result. The public FFmpeg example is one implementation, not a benchmark or proof that FFmpeg is more reliable. Its maintainer also reported a suspected remote decoder stall that was not apparent from local CPU, frame-count, or bitrate observations; that is a single community report, not an independently verified failure mechanism.
What YouTube requires from the stream
YouTube recommends RTMP or RTMPS for live ingest and supports H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1, at up to 60 fps. For a typical stream, RTMPS is the secure default when your installed encoder build negotiates it correctly. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over SSL/TLS; its documented connection uses an rtmps:// URL, the correct host and application path, port 443, and SNI set to the server hostname. Use the ingest URL and stream key supplied in YouTube Studio, not a guessed endpoint. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion requirements.

YouTube recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval must not exceed four seconds. Its current encoder settings page, accessed 2026, lists these recommended H.264 video bitrates:
| Output | YouTube-recommended video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps, AV1 or H.265 | 10 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended encoded video bitrates, not guaranteed minimum internet speeds. Audio and protocol traffic also use capacity, and the connection needs practical headroom; the cited guidance does not establish a universal multiplier. Choose a bitrate your actual connection can sustain, rather than treating a speed-test result or table value as a guarantee. YouTube notes H.265 is recommended for HDR over RTMP(S), while AV1 is not supported for HDR. Confirm that your specific encoder build and available hardware can produce the codec and output you select. Refer to YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

YouTube’s protocol comparison lists RTMP and RTMPS for normal, low, or ultra-low latency. HLS and DASH support other advanced codecs but are segment-based and typically higher-latency. For an ordinary 24/7 channel, do not switch to them without a concrete codec or resolution need and a compatibility and latency test: YouTube’s ingestion protocol comparison.
How to set up and validate a continuous stream
1. Choose the source, encoder, and host
For a single pre-recorded file or straightforward playlist, start with the tool you can operate and observe reliably; FFmpeg has the more directly documented publishing path for this case. Choose GStreamer if your workflow benefits from a pipeline assembled from separate media elements. If using GStreamer, confirm that the rtmp plugin and its rtmpsink element are installed, that the required libraries are linked, and that your actual RTMPS endpoint works. The element is part of GStreamer Bad Plug-ins and uses librtmp; its documentation demonstrates RTMP output, not a complete YouTube TLS/SNI recipe. See the GStreamer rtmpsink documentation.

For FFmpeg, consult the installed version’s protocol documentation and verify the selected RTMP(S) publishing options against your build and source media. The official manual documents the publishing URL structure, live mode, and RTMPS, but that does not supply a universally correct command for every input or package. See FFmpeg’s RTMP protocol documentation.

2. Configure YouTube output and protect the stream key
- Create or select the YouTube Live stream in YouTube Studio. Copy its ingest URL and stream key exactly into your encoder configuration.
- Prefer RTMPS if your build supports the endpoint requirements. Verify TLS, port 443, the correct host and application path, and SNI using the server hostname.
- Select a supported codec, resolution, frame rate, and bitrate. Apply CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, staying within YouTube’s four-second maximum. Ensure the installed software and any hardware encoder support the chosen settings.
- Keep the key private. Do not expose it in a public repository, screenshot, shared command history, or logs. Restrict access to configuration files that contain it.
3. Test the real source and the actual connection
- Use representative media. Test with the video, audio, motion, codec, and planned bitrate you intend to stream. YouTube advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.”
- Measure from the deployment host. Check sustained outbound throughput and connection stability to the chosen YouTube ingest endpoint at the planned bitrate, with headroom. Repeat at times relevant to your schedule; a brief speed test alone does not establish continuous capacity.
- Check YouTube’s stream-health status. Confirm that YouTube receives a healthy stream and review any messages before making the stream public or relying on it unattended.
- Exercise failure and recovery paths. Test what happens when the input ends or is corrupt, the network drops, the host reboots, disk space runs out, and the encoder exits. Confirm that your chosen process supervisor, alerts, and recovery procedure behave as intended.
4. Supervise the process and watch the viewer-facing stream
Run the encoder under a process supervisor configured for restart behavior, keep logs, and arrange alerts for failures. These are operational safeguards, not features automatically provided by either framework and not guarantees of uninterrupted streaming. Monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as the local process: the community FFmpeg example’s maintainer described a suspected decoder stall that was not visible from local CPU, frame-count, or bitrate metrics. Do not rely on a running process or local metrics alone to prove viewers are receiving a healthy stream.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What changes for a stream hosted in India?
The available evidence does not establish that India changes the choice between FFmpeg and GStreamer, or that a particular city, ISP, VPS region, or route is better. Your host location, network route to YouTube ingest, codec workload, and deployment configuration determine what works in practice. Measure the path from the host you will actually use; do not infer performance from the country alone.

For Indian creators, apply the same YouTube encoder settings and end-to-end checks as elsewhere. The recommended video bitrate is only one part of the connection’s sustained capacity, and no India-specific upload target or safety margin is established here.
Common problems and what to check
- RTMPS connection fails: verify the exact YouTube ingest URL and application path, stream key, TLS support in the installed build, port 443 access, and SNI hostname. If GStreamer is involved, confirm
rtmpsinkand its linked libraries are present. Test a private or unlisted stream before depending on the setup. - YouTube reports an unhealthy stream: check that the output codec and bitrate are supported, CBR is selected, and keyframes are two seconds apart and no more than four seconds apart. Compare the encoder’s output with YouTube’s current settings guidance and review the specific stream-health message.
- The local process is running but the stream appears stalled: check YouTube’s stream-health view and the received output, not only CPU use, frame count, or bitrate on the host. Investigate decoder progress, input integrity, and network delivery.
- The stream stops when the file ends or is unreadable: verify the loop or playlist behavior with the real files, then test end-of-file and corrupt-input recovery before leaving the stream unattended.
- The encoder cannot sustain the selected output: check CPU or hardware-encoder headroom and reduce the resolution, frame rate, or bitrate to a level the host and connection can sustain; then repeat the full YouTube test.
- Restarts do not restore the stream: inspect supervisor and encoder logs, verify that the source and configuration are available after restart, and test recovery from a network interruption and host reboot in advance.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you want a YouTube loop without maintaining an encoder process on your own computer or VPS, StreamNeo is a cloud service for uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It plays uploaded video rather than broadcasting a camera feed, and streams to YouTube only. Nothing has to stay on at home; each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month.
