What’s actually slowing this PC down?

For an unattended YouTube playlist stream, use OBS Studio as the encoder and production tool, with OBS’s VLC Video source for playlist playback. VLC can supply the videos and loop them, but the official documentation reviewed here does not establish VLC by itself as a drop-in replacement for OBS’s scene, source and stream-control workflow. The important catch is YouTube’s archive limit: a stream that runs beyond 12 hours may not be captured at all, so continuous broadcasting and preserving a YouTube replay are separate goals.
VLC vs OBS: what each one does in this setup
| Tool | Role in a playlist-based broadcast | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| OBS Studio | Encoder and production layer: create scenes and sources, connect to YouTube, and control the outgoing stream. | OBS documents a VLC Video source for playlists and looping. That source requires VLC to be installed; if OBS is 64-bit, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. |
| VLC | Media playback behind OBS’s VLC Video source. | Playlist playback and looping are documented within OBS’s VLC source. The reviewed official documentation does not establish VLC alone as a replacement for OBS’s production and stream-control workflow. |
For a simple continuous playlist, the practical choice is therefore not “OBS or VLC” so much as OBS for stream production plus VLC-backed playback. A playback-only use case may have different needs, but if you want OBS’s scene and source controls, add the playlist through its VLC Video source.
Set up a looping YouTube stream with OBS and VLC
- Install OBS and VLC. Match their architectures. OBS specifically requires 64-bit VLC when OBS is 64-bit.
- Add the playlist source in OBS. In your scene, add a VLC Video source, select the files for the playlist and enable looping.
- Check source visibility behavior. OBS documents “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” as the default behavior. If you use multiple scenes or hide the source, review this setting and test whether playback behaves as you intend during scene changes.
- Connect OBS to YouTube. Configure YouTube as the streaming destination, use RTMPS where available, and keep your stream key private. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube’s encoder settings guidance covers protocol, codecs, frame-rate guidance, bitrate ranges and advanced settings.
- Choose a bitrate your connection can sustain. YouTube recommends choosing a quality reliable for your internet connection and running an upload speed test. Its published H.264 figures include 1080p30 at 5 Mbps recommended (4 Mbps minimum) and 720p30 at 4 Mbps recommended (3 Mbps minimum). These are YouTube’s encoder recommendations, not measurements of Indian broadband performance.
- Test a representative broadcast. Use the same kind of audio and motion you plan to stream, then monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. Test from the actual streaming location; a speed result elsewhere does not establish what the stream connection can sustain.
- Decide how to handle replays before going live. If a YouTube archive matters, plan to end or rotate the session before it exceeds 12 hours and keep a local recording backup. Check that local storage is sufficient for your chosen recording settings and retention period.
Plan for YouTube’s 12-hour archive caveat
YouTube says a stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but warns that “If your stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all.” This is an archive limitation, not evidence that YouTube prohibits a continuous broadcast. YouTube also says DVR rewind capabilities may be limited or unavailable for streams longer than 12 hours. See YouTube’s live-stream archiving guidance and DVR guidance.
- If you need an on-platform replay: schedule shorter sessions, ending each before it exceeds 12 hours. Confirm the handoff works as intended rather than assuming an uninterrupted 24/7 session will yield a complete archive.
- If uninterrupted broadcast matters more than an on-platform replay: treat the stream archive as uncertain once a session passes 12 hours, and record locally if you need a copy.
- For local recording: estimate storage using your selected recording bitrate and the length of time you plan to retain files. There is no single storage size that applies to every stream.
When should you use HLS instead of RTMPS?
RTMPS is YouTube’s recommended ingest option for a typical encoder workflow. HLS is an alternative when an encoder or codec requirement calls for it and the encoder supports it. YouTube notes that HLS has higher latency because it sends segments rather than a continuous RTMP stream; it is not a general fix for a weak connection or long-session archiving.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
India-specific reliability: test the actual location
Bitrate guidance cannot tell you how reliable a particular Indian ISP, city connection or power supply will be. Run a sustained upload test at the place where the PC will stream, and check the machine’s load and temperature during a representative test. Also consider brief power interruptions: a suitably sized UPS may bridge some short outages, but its runtime depends on the connected computer and network equipment and it cannot guarantee uninterrupted service.
- Test the router and streaming PC together under realistic conditions.
- Check that the chosen resolution and bitrate remain stable over an extended test, not only for a brief speed test.
- Size any UPS for the actual equipment and expected runtime; no specific model or runtime is established here.
- Keep enough local disk space for the recordings you actually intend to retain.
Common problems and what to check
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| OBS cannot use the VLC source or playlist playback fails. | VLC is missing, or its architecture does not match OBS. | Install VLC and match architectures; for 64-bit OBS, use 64-bit VLC. |
| The playlist stops after a clip or does not repeat. | Looping is not enabled on the VLC Video source. | Review the source’s playlist and loop settings, then test through the end of a clip. |
| Playback stops after switching scenes or hiding the source. | The source’s visibility behavior may stop playback while hidden and restart when visible. | Review OBS’s documented “Stop when not visible, restart when visible” behavior and test your scene workflow. |
| YouTube reports stream-health problems or the stream is unstable. | The selected quality may exceed what the upload connection can sustain. | Run an upload test from the streaming location, choose a reliable bitrate and monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages. |
| A long stream has no complete YouTube replay, or rewind is limited. | The session exceeded 12 hours. | For a replay, rotate sessions before that point; make a local recording when a backup matters. |
